The outro of Crown is a rare moment of wanting a section longer in a Metallica song. That breakdown could've been twice as long, it's one of the heaviest parts of the whole record.

72S has some great songs, still skip You Must Burn, but is the album missing a ballad or two? No. I don't think that a ballad is a must-have. If there is one and it works, fine, but if there's not... It's also fine. Some of their best songs are ballads (or more acoustic based) so i don't agree with this.

I wonder if there's a deluxe edition or something new coming for the NA leg of the tour. Metallica's been bizarrely quiet for an album release year as soon as Europe's tour ended.

I was thinking a low effort one of 72S with a few live tracks or something just to boost it back up on streaming services.
No clue, this silence just seems very un-Metallica. Also, still waiting for Lars's So What interview.

I feel like despite this sort of thing traditionally being assumed as being below them, they weren't exactly happy with only getting to second place on the Billboard 200. It's the first time that's happened since AJFA peaked at 6 or something, it's crazy.

How are you guys feeling on the album now that it's been a few months?
It's still holding steady for me as a really strong album front to back. There's no songs that have risen so far above the rest that I'm gravitating to just those, so I'm still in the same boat of Hardwired having a few of the best songs out of the two. But it's easily my favorite listen front to back of any album since Load, by a decent margin too. If DM was better edited and mixed, it could beat out 72S. Maybe.

It's OK, but not a classic Metallica album imo, there are 3-4 very good songs on it though.

They messed up by not having Too Far Gone as a single. I wonder if it’ll get the promo/music video cycle as a midway single through the tour.

It obviously reminds you of No Remorse but it’s much less aggressive and heavy. It’s also a lot more melodic while still being somewhat fast in places. It’s really old school meets new school Metallica. It’s a solid track, not too long, amazing vocals, Lars isn’t annoying with his snare, solo isn’t completely garbage but also not completely great.

I'm kind of mixed on the album at this point. I think 1/3 of it is fantastic. The rest is okay. None of it is offensively bad, it's just kind of there. As a result it doesn't get much play from me outside of about 4 songs.

I still dig it, if anything, more so now than after the first few weeks high. It's great to have cranked up while I'm out on a bike ride or cleaning up the house.
If I was in charge of the singles I would definitely have gone with Shadows Follow as the first single followed up by Too Far Gone as the second more Serious yet still charged up song. 72 Seasons as the album launch single, followed by Lux to kick off the tour.
The song I revisit the least is If Darkness had a Son. Was never much of a fan, it's ok, drags a bit and is samey throughout. If it's on, I'll listen to it. In the context of the album it flows and doesn't bother me as much.
Sleepwalk is in the same boat but I find myself humming it here and there and putting it on on it's own just to get it out of my head.
The rest is still fantastic and a much better album all around than Hardwired.
I've been trying to restrain myself from over listening before the concert in a few more weeks.

I'd say the top 3 songs are 72 seasons, If Darkness Had a Son and Too Far Gone? The ones i listen to most anyway.

Amazing Burn
Very very good Crown Too Far Gone
Very good Inamorata Room of Mirrors
Alright Shadows Follows 72 Seasons Darkness
Boring Lux Suicide Sleepwalk
Awful Chasing Lights
Honestly, I haven’t heard Lux or Suicide in full since the movie premiere. Only live in concert. Chasing Lights is still a train wreck to my ears. Every single song has flaws and good parts. I don’t listen to the album much but when I do I enjoy most of it.

You guys honestly like You Must Burn? It's the worst song on the album imo, slow, plodding and tedious.

I have a hard time ranking this album because all my least favorite songs have some of my favorite moments on the album. Sleepwalk (the bass & drums intro), Chasing (the main riff and verse), and Mirrors (the harmony section). Everything outside of those sections are meh to me, but those parts I mentioned are way stronger than they have any right to be.

It's a fairly good album, with some really good songs, but not in my Metallica Top 5. Lux Æterna, You Must Burn! and 72 Seasons are the high points.

Sleepwalk reminds me of Now that We're Dead. They are not bad songs but also not really what I am looking for when I put Metallica on. Catchy melodylic, singalong songs Vs Battery in your face aggression.

I see the similarities, although I think Now That We're Dead is more successful in what it tries to do. It's a simple riff but one of my favorites on that album. Sleepwalk to me falls off a cliff during the middle section whereas NTWD maintains the groove the whole time. Sleepwalk does have a cool intro though.

I remember listening to HWTSD alot more than 72S quite a long time after its release too.
