Metallica's whole thing is that they never stopped writing the 4-5 minute songs after the Load era. They just pad them with 2-3 minutes of extra crap now (Sleepwalk and Chasing Light are the only two songs I really have structure problems with from 72S).

Getting Holier Than Thou vibes from the Shadows Follow riff, anyone else hear it?

You're right, some good editing and the songs would work much better, you really don't need 8+ minute songs (Outlaw Torn being the exception though).

I only have an isseu with every song having a long intro before the main riff kicks in. I can't name any song by title until James starts singing or the main riff starts.

I love Metallica songs over 4-5 minutes, just when they need to be. Sleepwalk and Chasing Light just do not kick in. It's worse for Sleepwalk tho since the best part of the whole song is the too-long intro

The reason why Lux Æterna works is that it's straight to the point. Imagine if it had a two-minute middle section. The song would likely lose its punch. I think Chasing Light could've been one of the best songs on the album. It arguably has the best riff on the album, but it's sandwiched between so much mess.

My guess would be the bouncy Anthraxy sounding riff ? I like that riff a lot

I think i prefer both DM and HWTSD to 72S, not saying there aren't good songs on it though.

I can only memorise one riff from that song right now and that’s the main riff. The one after the intro. Which I hate very much.
To me that song its on par with Murder One
I don’t hear any Anthrax in it either 🤷♂️

Nothing on 72S is that average, but yeah opinions.

Chasing Light is Hella awesome 😎 tied with Judas Kiss and All Nightmare Long for the most badass Chorus of any album post 1990. Come at me bros.

I gave the album a spin for the first time in a bit and it holds up better than Hardwired ever did as a full album.

Chasing Light has become the only song I skip now and is my least favourite on the album.

The main part that draws me to CL is the verse. It's so mean and groovy, and sorta feels like if Murder One was done right. Hate that "or we will break, please don't mistake" part though.

At least I find Murder One somewhat bouncy and groovy, I can bop my head to it. So I'd rate that one higher than Chasing Light

One thing that is a lot different this time, I haven't had the urge to pick up the guitar and learn these songs... To me this is a total vocal driven album and if I'm being a little harsh I could say that there's not too much interesting stuff going on in the rhythm guitar section.
Of cause there's a cool stuff here and there, but it's nothing compared to DM that was filled was awesome James stuff

Id picked out the main riff from Darkness and then did Lux from doodling about when they first dropped but it was literally only last weekend I had the urge to learn some sections. And the first riff was the bouncy one from Chasing Light (which looks like everyone here hates!). Also sussed out the 72S riff which reminded me of That was just Your Life.

72S has some great songs, still skip You Must Burn, but is the album missing a ballad or two?

72S has some great songs, still skip You Must Burn, but is the album missing a ballad or two? No. I don't think that a ballad is a must-have. If there is one and it works, fine, but if there's not... It's also fine.
