A little bit of random ambient sounds or instruments would have been delicious. It is very 1 dimensional sonically. More tambourines and didgeridoos damn it! You know what i mean, there are repeated ideas in there (riffs/lyrics).

^ I like the album, i just feel like they could've been a bit more adventurous. i find this rather humorous/ironic given the history of Metallica's musical "adventuring" that's lead to the vast majority of vitriol and criticism towards the band (the loads, st anger, Lulu...hell people hated them for writing a ballad, hated them for the black album...) That said, if they do end up making another record... I think the time is right for them venture out of this comfort zone they've found and air out their sound a little bit. feels like metallica is due for a "breather" record. maybe explore what they touched on with Inamorata.

Inamorata is nothing new in the Metallica book. It does feel right though for this stage in their career to dial it back just a tad more.
My kid walked in while I was listening to one of the faster tracks and was like " This is cool, what's this?" I told him it's the new Metallica and he rambled on about old boomers or something and how he was shocked that this was being played by guys around the same age as his grandpa.

I dont think anyone will argue that 72s could have used a ballad.
But I'll pass on the instrumental. i think metallica fans love the IDEA of instrumentals but that's mostly a romanticized nostalgia thing. lets face it. To Live is to Die basically never gets play and Suicide & Redemption was overly long and kind of boring
Ktulu and Orion are the exceptions. they are very well written, interesting and don't overstay their welcome. they also have the added benefit as serving as Cliff Burton worshiping Cathedrals

I don't need a ballad. If there is one, and it's good, fine. But it's not a must. The same goes for instrumentals.

I think not having a ballad holds the album back tremendously. Ballads are often some of Metallica's best work. But that's just me.

Is Inamorata a ballad? It's debatable. Any thoughts?

Is Inamorata a ballad? It's debatable. Any thoughts? No and neither are most of the songs that people think. The Day That Never Comes. Not a ballad. Fade To Black. Not a ballad. Halo On Fire. Not a ballad. The Unforgiven. Not a ballad. A clean guitar tone does not make a song a ballad. The only actual ballads in the catalogue are NEM, Mama Said and Low Man's Lyric.... and that last one is a stretch.

I'm sorry but i don't agree with this, a ballad's definition is a slow sentimental (or romantic) song.

But even then, for me, it's about the tone of the song. The heavy heavy guitars in FTB, TDTNC etc disqualify it from a ballad category. Ultimately it's all nonsense as who gives a shit really, but I've always been amused/slightly annoyed with the word "ballad" being applied to a song with no romantic lyrics and heavy distorted guitars.

Lux Æterna doesn't work for me live. Probably a combination of the tuning, James' live voice and the faster tempo.

This seems like a very sloppy performance for what they usually put up on their YouTube, no? It sounds fine to me. It just sounds like they're having mic problems whenever James' starts to sing. I've noticed it on the fan videos as well. Whoever is in charge of turning on the mics around that humongous stage has my sympathy. I like the song live, it's lively and it's not long.

Listened to the title track 72S yesterday out and about and it is pretty rocking, Too Far Gone is still a favourite.

This seems like a very sloppy performance for what they usually put up on their YouTube, no? This even sounds edited timing wise. It was all over the place, especially the first verse was bad. Check a YouTube vid from the seats, they more or less butcher it. That said it’s a cool live songs with great energy so I enjoyed it nonetheless. I don’t like that they don’t play the intro, such a weird choice. Also it’s fun to hear how fast the intro are on the record vs how they end the song. It’s so much slower 😅 Same thing with day, the last snare roll is so slow that it sounds stupid

So we are officially at the point of "an intro tape for every song" now?

Can't wait for inevitable shows where whole concert is on tape, with band members sitting on stage smoking cigars and counting money from said show.

So we are officially at the point of "an intro tape for every song" now? The My Apocalypse intro was good and also the TDTNC reversed tape.
