Yesterday I was listening to Crown repeatedly, and suddenly started to grind my teeth just like the mad murderer from the video.
Should I call my therapist? 😂😂😂

The section in You must burn! that Rob sings in would fit really well on either of Ghost's two first albums.

Not like in Halo Yeah, that's the one if I understood him correctly in the 72 Seasons interview (I haven't noticed his voice either by the way).

That prison video for Crown that just dropped is quite something... I don't like the glorification of violence without a conclusive narrative tied to this song at all. I can see where the plot was supposed to go, but all of a sudden Metallica are seemingly siding with a child and mom killer and everybody dies by the spit out the Bone skeleton? The song is a pretty deep insight into how James perceives the weight of his legacy and this is what gets done to it🤔 I think maybe James is afraid that bad people might be inspired by their music and do bad things with it. Like for example soldiers who listen to Metallica to get inspired to go out in the battlefield and kill. In a way their music helps to create violence. So I guess he might live with this guilt and feel like he's got blood on his hands. That's what I got from the video and how it ties to the lyrics. Pretty heavy thing to live with.

That's a big stretch. I get what you're saying, but they probably didn't even see the final product that much sooner than we did. Someone okayed it, and that someone is someone they trust 🤷🏻♂️
The proper St Anger narrative would be that the dad stalks his prey in the prison and at the end realizes that as much as he hurts, karma won't be delivered by his hand. The bad guy would still get killed at the end in a riot or by someone else, but at least our main guy would have had a character arc that was positive. Maybe make Metallica the guards who turn the blind eye while the bad guy is getting shanked.

Not like in Halo I also don't hear his vocals anywhere on this record. But that's no surprise for me... He's a major bassist, but he just can't sing, even if his life would depend on that.

The videos for the first 4 singles are actually pretty good, they should've just done the same for the other songs.

It’s all I’ve listened to over the last week. I’ve had a busy week so not been listening all day/every day, but definitely thrown a few songs on throughout the week and have had at least 2-3 end to end play throughs.
I should have a break or I’ll burn out on it too soon, but I’m loving it and can’t stop listening to it.

It was always all about backing vocals.

He only did the WAKE! shouting together with James in Dream no more though, so I would say You must burn! is his first actual singing performance.
The Dream no more recording:

It's kind of funny they made a big deal out of it anyway since historically Metallica albums have always had uncredited backing vocals on them, like the Creeping Death chant, Lars screaming in Ride the Lightning and Cliff I think doing some actual backing vocals on the album. Even Jason got a few moments which is saying something considering how tense their studio working relationship used to be. It wasn't really until the 2000s when they suddenly just stopped doing them, Garage Inc. still featured them.

So I guess he's part of the creepy vocals in You must burn. Rereading, it seemed like it would be more obvious and up front.
SC: Talk a little more about the vocal developments on 72 Seasons.
RT: It’s the first time that James and Greg had probably ever really trusted me with that position on a recording of this stature. I was surprised when I got the call from Greg because I was coming up to play a little bass, but then he said, “I’m going to have you sing on a couple things, too.” And I was like, “Really?” I got a little nervous. At the same time, I was very motivated. Fortunately for me, the part really does suit my comfort zone, so to speak. The vibe and the interesting – I don’t know, I wouldn’t say the “quality” in what I had to offer – but the part lends itself to my personality, to my voice, and it sits and slots in really well with the moment and bass breakdown. So it’s cool that it’s this breakdown that James and I were able to jam on and create, and then I get to sing on it too!

Yeah but he also didn't sound good in front of a microphone til the Worldwired tour.
Also Rob is pretty audible on the You Must Burn bridge, you just kinda have to locate where his voice is in the mix. He's singing a single note the entire time, and tonally he sounds pretty similar to the "nya nya nya"'s in Carpe when they did it live.

I don't get what you're saying about Rob sounding good from the Worldwired tour onwards. To me his vocals went from bad to just meh at most. And the need for that other guy to do the backing vocals at the acoustic sets for the AWMH foundation just proves it, IMHO. I'm not a Jason fanatic, but I do miss someone who could just sing along with James and add another dimension and textures to the songs, especially live. If it wasn't for that Rob interview, we'd never ever really notice his vocals on 72S.

You can barely hear him on YMB, and you're right his singing is pretty bad (for example the duets with Kirk on the HW tour).

Been listening to the album all week and have to say it's pretty good. 7.5/10
The only songs i don't like are You Must Burn and Lux Aeterna.
Alot of decent tracks on there though.

Even though it's on the lower end of my rankings, I think the Chasing Light riff at around 0:45 is the best riff on the album. The song as a whole doesn't reach the heights of that riff. In a way it's sort of similar to Judas Kiss on DM. Incredible chorus riff, so-so song. Could've benefitted from being trimmed, which is a common Metallica issue these days. Still pretty good though.
