I don't know if all of these songs needs a video. I was a bit reserved on the Hardwired videos, but most of those weren't that bad. But this honestly is pretty bad. It's just them flailing around trying to act avant-garde to a song that doesn't fit what they're doing. The Crown of Barbed Wire video was just straight up cringe and looks like it was animated by some teenager into edgy shit.

Chasing Light is the only song from the batch that doesn't add anything for me, but I still enjoy it. It'd definitely be my top choice to vote off the album if there had to be one. I've even come around to Sleepwalk for what it is, it just feels a little incomplete with some layers lacking. That intro is unique for Metallica though and almost justifies the whole song.

For me, this album is perfect. The only albums I've enjoyed this much in the last 30 years upon release was Load and Death Magnetic, and as much as I loved Load at the time, I think it was due to a bit of Stockholm Syndrome, my youthful anticipation for new Metallica, and all that. This album has everything I've wanted from them. Pound for pound, this album far exceeds Load IMO. I'm 11 for 12 now with this 72 Seasons album and Sleep Walk is quickly gaining momentum.

Three takes, possibly hot:
1. The best riff on the album is the part after the solo in Shadows Follow, where the drums start playing in half time and that simple riff gets an added "octave tail". I love how the last note of the tail is held for the first two measures of the next bar, instead of going straight back to the E-0 chugging. In combination with the half time drums it makes the riff even heavier. I started headbanging and smiling at the same time when I heard it for the first time.
2. I like the pre-chorus in 72 Seasons. I definitely think it should be there.
3. Except for the last awesome guitar harmony part Room of mirrors does more or less nothing for me.

By this point in Hardwired's life I was already gravitating towards a select few songs and neglecting the rest (mostly disc two). That's not happening here, and I'm pretty confident in calling this their most cohesive release since The Black Album. That being said, Moth/Dream/Halo tops any song from 72 Seasons for me, but all of 72 Seasons tops Manunkind/Murder/Revenge.

I don't think it was a "they forgot they already wrote that" kind of thing. More of a revision, reimagining, tribute to things they loved. |

the song You Must Burn doesn't do much for me, but the lyrics are great. seems like james is touching on Cancel Culture a bit. Crown is so damn addicting, and the outro is just brutal totally agree. and james vocals on that are just  That riff at :56 is an absolute stomper even if Chevelle did it first on Choking Game. |
