I'm old enough to know that statement isn't true. It was true actually. Not evrryone og course but there is a big number of people hated him because of how hr changed the sound of 80s metallica. Nah. It wasn't. Cos I didn't hate Bob Rock so the word "every" is wrong on that basis. I'm old enough to know that statement isn't true. the hell it is lol the dude was literally getting death threats after Load and St Anger. Again, statement is not true. "Every" fan did not hate his involvement. I didn't. So "every" is wrong. By like 1 or 2 40 year old never was basement dwellers. It wasn't even remotely a majority or even 1/4 of the fandom. Most likely it was just Smithers. i guess i just had a completely different experience than you guys. every metallica hater in my orbit especially throughout the mid/late 90s said bob rock ruined metallica. i heard that shit all the time. (i never shared that opinion) That sucks man. All the folks in my orbit were positive about it cos the thing that mattered most was the music. And the music was/is stellar. Did we really need a pinned topic telling us not to share the album? Really? We did at the time the post was made, yes. Could I remove it now? Sure. Will I? No, cos the principle still applies

My only qualm from the die hard nerd Metallica fan side of me is I still don't like the flow of the songs (especially the first half) and there's some wonky transitions in a lot of these songs (after chorus two of Burn comes to mind). But even with that I'm confident in saying this is my favorite Metallica album since Load. I know we theorize this after every album release, but the vibes seem really good in the Metallica camp right now. If James is heavily capping touring this much, I'd love a follow up in 4 years instead of 7 (just go tour Australia first).

According to Lars, the 2 week on/2 week off schedule is down to him and custody of his kid. Think he talks about it on the Bill Maher interview that dropped couple of days ago.

Oh and I straight up hated Crown after 2-3 listens… Now it’s almost a favourite of mine, funny how that works. Me with Shadows Follow. I thought that riff was so dorky but I'm loving it now, it took a few listens to get it.
Also +1 to everyone saying the vocals rather than the riffs are the highlight. I listened to ReLoad this weekend and realized the same thing goes on in those albums too. I tried to pay more attention to the guitar work on that album too and noticed a lot of riffs my brain never acknowledged before, because I was always focused on the vocals. The riff phrasing and structure of Attitude feels like a sibling of this album.
Overall I'm having a hard time even pinpointing my least favorite song, which is a good sign for the album. Chasing Light feels like the song that doesn't add anything to the bunch, but there's still parts I like from it. Room of Mirrors I wish they put another month of work into. You Must Burn is sneaking into my favorites list, alongside TFG, Inamorata, and Lux.
The Shadows Follow riff is pretty cool but The man Lux Aeterna riff i really can't stand (it kicks in at 0:20).

Better enjoy this one to the fullest.

About Shadows Follow.
I freakin LOVE the bridge that starts at 2:55. "Cut and Run..." Part - awesome. The "Shut My Eyes" that goes into that cool lead section a'la battery bridge gave me chills and definitely is a highlight of the album for me.
However,
I just can't, can't stand the main riff and verses of that song. It just sound so dumb and thoughtless like it would be something that local highschool band could write. If they re-used the exact same riff from Parking Lot I would be so much happier. Also, to me what has always seperated James Hetfield from let's say someone like Tom Araya is that (among many things) he composed very cool and thoughtful vocal melodies instead of just rhythmically shouting words to a drum beat. Which is what exactly he does in the verse and chorus of Shadows Follow. I just interpret it as this song has somewhat primal theme so it kind of fits but still I think I'll be listening to the bridge of that song only.

If they re-used the exact same riff from Parking Lot I would be so much happier. Shit, this is the way. I'm getting used to the main riff but I still don't love it. It reminds me of The Emperor by Megadeth (hate that riff) but not quite as dorky.

Some of the best modern Metallica riffs are still stuck in the Parking Lot... and Lulu.

You guys really dig that parking lot riff that much ? I don't miss anything about it.
The Dragon riff was awesome but that’s the only one from that album I would have reused in another song. And it’s still not a top ten riff if we include both Hardwired and Seasons

Parking Lot riff isn't incredible but I do prefer it to the main riff in Shadows. Dragon though I'd still rank as one of Het's best riffs this century, partially just because of how outside his normal writing style it is.

I tried listening to 72 Seasons in the car and those damn jingle bell hi-hats made me quickly reach for the stereo's five-band EQ to lower the hell out of the highs. The road noise drowning out a lot of the bass and midrange basically made the hi-hat the only thing I could hear clearly with the vocals and guitars just disappearing under the noise. The song itself is still alright though but the arrangements being better would definitely improve the hell out of it. Lars really dropped the ball on this one, both drumming and arrangements wise. A song like Too Far Gone? with some pretty actually catchy vocal melodies only survives on its length - if it was six minutes like most of the songs on the album I'd probably consider it meh. Now it's still holding up alongside Room of Mirrors and Inamorata as examples of some cool and somewhat different/unexpected music from Metallica. I think maybe that's my biggest problem with the album - I'm not getting enough of that "oh wow, didn't expect that" effect that even HTSD managed to have. I dunno. I think I still need to digest it more. I haven't relistened to the album at all yet, just the title track earlier and the last three a few times over the weekend. Still pretty confident this'll end up last in the Trujillo era album rankings.
e: I put the album on now and Shadows Follow feels like it almost had something going on with the chorus vocal melody but it's not quite there. Oddly frustrating!

it's so hard for me to rate death magnetic. there's great songs on that record but the awful production is such a turnoff.

I have a soft spot for Death Magnetic. If the production was better I think I'd call it my favorite album. The only song I really dislike is Broken, Beat & Scarred but that's only because the demo version was so much better.

Came across this edit. It's basically exactly as many including myself wished, even with the fade out.

Oh wow duh, of course that should fade out. They should've kept that outro for live purposes only.

Post by Ruflux on Apr 17, 2023 21:19:01 GMT
I don't like fadeouts. They feel like a lazy solution for when you can't think of a solid enough ending to a song and only very rarely do they actually work to create that sense of the song continuing into eternity. That said, ending songs approximately 20-30 seconds after the logical stopping point is definitely a bit of a 72 Seasons running theme but honestly I don't feel it with Room of Mirrors.
In fact I see no point in those edits either. It makes the song sound rushed and oddly uneven. The repeats are just as long as they need to be to let the composition breathe and it helps smooth out the lack of proper transitions. I think a lot of fan edits forget that a section repeating is not always a bad thing because it's pretty foundational to music, and it's definitely something that was present in Metallica's music since the beginning.

The second half of You Must Burn! is definately something you could hear from Candlemass! Such an awesome part. Might be the worst song on the album.

Mirrors and Shadows been the biggest growers for me. I also have grown to love Lux and Suicide, both of which i was indifferent about upon their prerelease
the song 72 Seasons is just okay for me. it's a bit too long and the chorus doesn't really do anything for me.
Inamorata has some nice moments but it's not on the same level as it's Load/Reload counterparts. and honestly if i'm putting a Hardwired/Seasons mix... i'd rather just have Spit Out the Bone as my closer.
Burn and Sleep are the skips for me on this record... much like Murder One, Manunkind, Confusion are on HW.
i've already listed my favorites.

I know most of us don’t care about videos but it has to be pointed out just how bad they are.
Who’s seen the latest one? It makes the black and white flashing squares we saw in the cinema look like a cinematic masterpiece.

Also you guys disliking the Shadows riff, it’s probably one of my favourite riffs if not my most favourite on the album. That riff along with Just A Bullet Away in my top 5 post Black Album riffs easily.
Don’t remember that parking lot riff at all.
