There are a lot of regurgitated riffs on this album. Hell, You Must Burn and Chasing Light have riffs that are so similar I swear they were once in the same song. YMB @ 3:42 and CL the verse riff. Tell me those riffs weren't once together.

This isn't bad but I kind of wanted to see the theatrical one again cause there's a lot going on in that video. Also a bit weird that they all look 20 years younger here. Hopefully we get a new chasing light video as well.

The Room of Mirrors video is a really cool idea, but it's so low budget lol. Just a handful of the same scenes they keep cycling through. It’s awesome It reminds me of that awful Slayer video for World Painted Blood. Not Good.

Some riffs do sound too similiar or stock like they mentioned. Oh and Lars really abused that snare. And babrbed wire sounds awesome

I’m really being kind of distracted from the riffs because of James’s memorable singing, I often don’t really notice what is going on behind him. It’s pretty weird because this is not normally how I tend to listen to music.
I’ve dosed my listening very carefully so the album still feels very new and fresh to me. I’ve not yet reached the point were I deconstruct each song and really digs in there.
That said there’s load of times were my mind recognise something, this is most often just vibes from other stuff, like the Sabbathy and Mercyful fate influences. But there’s also obvious stuff that’s draws your mind straight back to earlier Metallica songs, and I’m sure I will find loads of these once I really get in deep.
As long as it’s not blatantly obvious then i’m okay with it, like Too Far Gone / Remorse. I can accept that. But I have a feeling there’s things in there that are straight up lifted from previous work, I can’t remember what songs but both the riffs and melody hooks from End of the line is certainly in there somewhere.

I’m sorta coming around to Chasing Lights as well that's awesome. i've pounding the table for "Crown of Barbed Wire" as one of the best songs on this album from day 1. for a moment there i thought i was going to be on an isalnd with that one but i've seen so many reactors and fans admit they're coming around to it. so gratifying. man, say what you want about Kirk's soloing, but he owns probably 4 of the top 6 riffs on this record; Chasing Light Barbed Wire 72 Seasons Darkness Has a Son

I'm changing my mind on Inamorata too. At first I thought it was dragging and boring, now I just think it is boring. Yeah, it's a bit of a snoozer. I like it, it's good when it gets going. I just have to be in the right mindset to want to listen to it. Last night I was and played it back to back with Crown on my walk. Felt great because I was there in mind and spirit. Was a nice walk.

I have listened to it many times so far. I like it. It's an 8/10. In fact, I rated each song over 10 and the actual math says it is 7.75 for me. The high rated songs are (8 or above);
72 Seasons: 8.5 Shadows Follow: 9 You Must Burn: 8.5 (easily could be a 10 if not for the main riff being a bit boring until the awesome melodic break in the middle) Crown of the Barbed Wire: 8 If Darkness Had a Son: 8 Too Far Gone?: 9 Inamorata: 10
Chasing Light has parts that are 9 but also has an approx. 1.30 seconds part that is 2 so I can't rate it higher than an 8. At least not yet.

If anyone is interest, I added my song by song thoughts here too: 72S Good song. A tad long, though…“stare into black light” bit could be edited. But is it that strong to open the album? I doubt.
8.5/10
Shadows Follow My favourite at the moment. But is it really better than, say, Through the Never? Time will tell. Similar style. Heavy. Memorable. Catcy. Groovy. Modern Metallica at its finest ‘metal’ form, isn’t it? From Parking Lot riff to Moth…They have managed to find a comfort zone here.
9/10 Screaming Suicide
My least favourite song off the singles. I still don’t like the intro melody. But the song is alright. Within the context of the album, it was enjoyable. I expected it to be the worst song but it isn’t. Closer to KEA than TBA/Load.
7/10
Sleepwalk My Life Away
A typical mid 90s Metallica heavy song. A groovy, catchy song with an attitude. But is it really good? Catchy song, indeed. The riffs are good enough. This kinda feels like Am I Savage to me. Not the worst song for me but it’s not appealing that much. The second half also has that Sabbath-y feel you hear throughout the album.
6.5/10
You Must Burn!
Heavy stomper of the album. But I wouldn’t rate this better than Dream No More. One of the best songs but only because the second half of the song is amazing. The main riff and verses don’t do much for me. Another Sabbath influenced tune. But dare I say the second half of the song is almost like a Candlemass song. Great work. A little bit too long perhaps but doesn’t hurt. I don’t like the chorus much, though. This could have been a masterpiece(a 10/10) but it only remains as a good to great song.
8.5 /10
Lux Aeterna
Serves the purpose well enough. Fun song. Straight from early 80s and it delivers the vibe and concept well enough. Will it go down in history as one of the bests? Not really. But good enough this long into their careers.
7.5/10
Crown of the Barbed Wire
Is this the most divisive song? Perhaps. I really like it, though. It’s different. Unique riffs but I am not sure if I like those but I totally don’t dislike it. I like these kind of odd songs. The ending is very heavy! This might be a great live song. The bridge / preverse riff is weird. 2000s mainstream heavy metal / hard rock riffs to my ears. It is alright but I’d expect more from Metallica. However I am also sure that this particular riff would work well with the masses in a live setting.
Pre chorus verse riffs are pretty fun. Chorus are, well, catchy for sure. But I am not sure about the main riff comes after that. Sounds like they had some trouble connecting the song. 3:27 onwards is great. However when they increased the pitch before the heavy ending at 5:22, was it really necessary? They could have directly continued with the heavy ending. But this one is here to stay for me.
8/10
Chasing Light
I love it starts with vocals. But I’m not crazy about the intro and the following verse riff is pretty much boring modern Metallica. BUT one of the best chorus section in the entire album! That would make Rammstein super jealous!
The section starting from 3:44 (one step down part) is boring. We have heard this riff somewhere? Solo is not bad. But the riffs underneath isn’t good.
But right after the solo, the song picks it up again until the end! Great section, and great ending! Love it. The ups in this song are too strong for me the overlook.
I wished that they just didn’t include that mid section. Could have been a 8-9/10 song.
7.5/10
If Darkness Had a Son
Good to great song. Great chorus. Works well in the sequence of the album. Could have been a little bit shorter but it’s alright.
8/10
Too Far Gone
Not particularly bad but not a very good intro, to be honest. But the song is awesome. One of the most fun songs they have ever done since No Leaf Clover. This song does everything right. Melodies, solos, tempo, chorus, catchyness, heavyness, great singing, feeling.
And I usually don’t like the punk influence in thrash metal but I love the chorus. The album overall has similar vibes but this is one of the rare cases that they delivered a different taste by making this chorus as it is. Also this one definately has a No Remorse and Garage Inc. feeling.
9/10
Room of Mirrors
By far my least favourite song on the album. I would scrap this all together. Despite that this one also has an awesome section, nothing made me wanna go back and listen to again and again. It has melodies, it has riffs, it has tempo, it has different sections and all under 6 minutes but they managed to make it the least interesting song for me.
Of course, the dual harmony section starting from 3:36 is great. Then the song manages to be a real thrash metal song after that. But that punkish rhythms don’t do anything for me. They have some nice riffs here and there but overall they don’t stay long enough to change the vibe.
Ironically this song is one of the most melodic songs and feature a lot of different sections. This is one of the cases where none of that works for me.
I am wondering if this song will ever click with me.
3/10
Inamorata
The epic and beautiful grand finale! I have to admit. In comparison, this is not stronger than the Outlaw Thorn, Fixxxer or Bleeding Me. But it is up there in the same league.
Very Black Sabbath-esque. Moody, cool, has an attitude you can’t deny but also features some of the most beautiful vocals Hetfield delivered. In fact, his singing after the bass break is just heavenly amazing. Everything is great with this song. But of course what will go down in history is the mid section. I just wished that Rob’s bass would have been a little bit longer. I actually like what Lars plays on hi-hat here. In a way, the second half of the song has a jam feeling that reminds me of the Junior Dad live rendition. Great melodies, great solos, overall vibe is just amazing.
10/10

Imagine how good this album would have been if it had proper solos.
Just like on HWTSD the most interesting part of the solos on this album are the riffs Hetfield plays in the background. I actually think some songs would be better if Kirk just didn’t solo at all, and we just hear Het play riffs.

I really don't mind them at all. Kirk should have come up with better solos. Of course that would have made the album better. But it's fine. Transitions on the other hand...they can do much better.

10/10 Your comment about the jammy feel in Inamorata reminded me that on the cinema night it reminded me of Neil Young - Cortez the Killer ending. Need to go and listen again now, but I recall now that coming to mind. Also agree Screaming Suicide was the weakest single. Darkness is far superior, I really like 72 Seasons but Lux has serious staying power to me which is weird because I dont always love short songs (like Hardwired) and I still wonder if swapping those 2 around would have worked better. And the band obviously thought 72S was the right call to kick it off. To be honest, for me its more that Lux doesnt sit right following another song..it kinda pops, so would work very well as the opener. I have stopped listening for a bit to avoid dissecting it too quickly. I've got a few other albums in my to-listen pile, but wont be very long before I revisit

jorn that middle part in Chassing light is pretty much the riff from Suicide and Redemption. That's what it sounds like to me. probably. I thought of one of the live takes of death is not the end but I need to check that. Reusing previously released or unreleased riffs is probably unintentional. I guess it just happens out of comfort. James said he's not very aware of these kind of things but Lars usually is.

Oh and I straight up hated Crown after 2-3 listens… Now it’s almost a favourite of mine, funny how that works. Me with Shadows Follow. I thought that riff was so dorky but I'm loving it now, it took a few listens to get it.
Also +1 to everyone saying the vocals rather than the riffs are the highlight. I listened to ReLoad this weekend and realized the same thing goes on in those albums too. I tried to pay more attention to the guitar work on that album too and noticed a lot of riffs my brain never acknowledged before, because I was always focused on the vocals. The riff phrasing and structure of Attitude feels like a sibling of this album.
Overall I'm having a hard time even pinpointing my least favorite song, which is a good sign for the album. Chasing Light feels like the song that doesn't add anything to the bunch, but there's still parts I like from it. Room of Mirrors I wish they put another month of work into. You Must Burn is sneaking into my favorites list, alongside TFG, Inamorata, and Lux.
5 hours later edit: Just noticed I contradicted myself today with Shadows Follow. Just to clarify, I'm loving the song as a whole, but that main riff is still weak.

What I enjoy most about the album is the variety it has to offer. If I'm in the mood for sludgy moody stuff, I have choices, same with thrashy punky stuff, etc. If I want a ballad I can fall back to Inamorata or You Must Burn, which I know aren't ballads, but they're close enough for me to take them in that context if I feel the need
