Wtf, James plays the intro of Lux at 0:41 when they were writing Hardwired. There are quite a few recycled sections, that riff in Too Far Gone is very similar to the one in No Remorse.

72 seasons songs sound like B-sides from the Hardwired sessions. I kinda wonder if that's not the case... Yup, more or less. Beyond Hardwired. I think the best songs on 72 Seasons are definitely better than the worst songs on HWTSD, but there's no Dream no more on it, there's no Spit out the bone on it, there's no Halo on fire on it and there's certainly no Moth into flame on it.
So far I think 72 Seasons is filled with good songs but overall the Great songs are missing.
Yeah, we're on the same page. It's the other 12 songs that didn't make it in HWTSD. Some good moments for sure, some interesting ideas, but overall nothing truly special. I actually think I've nailed what 72 seasons is: It's Hardwired with St. Anger's lyrics. There I said it. Discuss.

The songs are far from perfect, i'm just enjoying them for what they are, there are some bangers on there. This might be their last album.

Awesome. I was hoping that was the case as I presumed the cinema mix was not just a standard stereo format. Please make a mix with Lars toned down and no hi hat over the soft section in inamorata! It won't be that easy I'm afraid. I can tone it down but not erase it.
That hi-hat during the middle part is probably the single biggest mistake Metallica has made since getting on a bus in Sweden.
One thing that you can do that would help immensely IMO (more of an edit) would be to extend the massive epic dubble bass drum harmony section at the end of Room of mirrors, cut and paste it multiple times and have the song fade out on that repeating harmony instead of going back to those last few riffs they end it with.

Room of Mirrors is so damn good. It's moving up my list. It's definitely my favorite at the moment. It's sooooo good, like makes my eyes watery during the harmony parts good. What a beast. One of the best things they've written in all 40 years.

Without getting into much detail yet, I'd say I'm loving the album. They have written some of the best songs of the last 20 years, some of which can rival some of the TBA, and the Loads stuff.
The only one that hasn't clicked with me yet (and perhaps it never will) is Innamorata -- not bad but it feels flat, it never seems to take off. Other than the melodic solo, there's not much epicness going on. Also, having the word "misery" take over the lyrics wasn't wise in my opinion as it makes you immediately think of My Friend of Misery.

So it seems some of the vids shown at the listening party/screening were different from the ones being uploaded at YouTube, doesn't it? I honestly feel they weren't ready and we got placeholders. Them also releasing the theater footage of the guys pretty much makes the whole thing not seem all that special at all. Some places got gift bags while others didn't. Makes you wonder if they gave more stuff to venues that sold more tickets and just ignored the smaller ones.

After a few listens, more observations on each song. 72 Seasons: kicks ass. I've learned to accept the overbearing hi-hat in this song, and throughout the album, really. I think that besides Lux Æterna, this one is the one that I find myself thinking about the most. Shadows Follow: definitely a good song. Not spectacular, not filler, but it just works. Really like the chorus. The "Batman riff" towards the end is funny as fuck. I just can't help but smile when I hear it. Screaming Suicide: has become one of my favorites. I wasn't sold on it at first, but now it kicks ass. Sleepwalk My Life Away: also growing on me. Once I got past the obvious Sandman-riffage, I noticed this is a pretty cool song. Some groovy grunge-stylings on the vocals, a nice swagger on the chorus, a cohesive structure, and the solo at around 4 minutes is one of the better ones Kirk has done in literally decades. You Must Burn!: pretty damn good, getting better on each listen. Another really groovy, slow stomper in the vein of Sad But True, Dream No More and Am I Savage?. Very Load-era. I love the "In the heat of the night" part. Some of the best lyrics on the album. Lux Æterna: just plain fun. I really, really like it. Fast, short, to the point, and perfectly encapsulates the early influences for Metallica. Definitely my favorite song on the album. Crown of Barbed Wire: starts off really weird and clunky. It's maybe the worst offender in the "random riffs slammed together" category on this album. Lots of starts and stops and starts. There's definitely some 90s alt rock vibes on this one. James's singing doesn't appeal to me here. I'm not really feeling this song. Chasing Light: another one that bounces all around, with parts that don't really feel like they belong together. A pretty decent solo from Kirk. The ending is really cool though. A decent song, but wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there. If Darkness Had a Son: I'm starting to really like it. Not much more to say there. It's a really good song. Too Far Gone?: has a really strong No Remorse feel, but the chorus sounds 80s hardrock-ish, plus I'm getting strong Iron Maiden vibes on this song, too. Room of Mirrors: has fallen on my list. It's got a nice, fast pace, but there's just some clunkiness that drops it a bit, and some slight transition problems. A dozen different ideas stuck together. Some of them are good, but all in all it sounds so incohesive. The dual guitar solo towards the end is pretty tasty though. Inamorata: I just noticed that the main riff is quite similar to Suicide & Redemption. All in all, it's a great song. I love the howling backing vocals on "MISERY!" Very well constructed, which is surprising, considering its length. Really tasty and moody riffing throughout. Easily one of the better long songs Metallica has done. It's no Fixxxer, but easily, easily better than, say, Bleeding Me or The Outlaw Torn. Actually, let's see. Non-cover songs running over 8 minutes from Metallica, in a tier list. S Tier... And Justice For All, Master of Puppets, Orion, Fixxer A TierTo Live is to Die, Inamorata, The Call of Ktulu, Disposable Heroes B TierAll Within My Hands, Halo On Fire C TierSuicide & Redemption, Invisible Kid, Some Kind of Monster, The Judas Kiss D TierThe Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, Rebel of Babylon Okay. With that out of the way, back to 72 Seasons. It's a good album. Far better than Death Magnetic, nowhere near as great as HWTSD, but absolutely servicable and enjoyable. It would definitely benefit from having better production, someone telling James and Lars to chill and tighten some of the songs a bit. And Lars to take it easy on the hi-hat... I'm not sure Greg Fidelman is the guy to do it, so I hope that if they're going to do another album, they'll get someone who can challenge them on the production decisions. Lyrically, it's kinda... Just there. As matsacchi said, it feels really similar in style to St. Anger - post-rehab self-help mumbo jumbo. There's much more uplifting and positive vibes in the mix, though. I can live with the lyrics, but it's nothing to really get excited over. But yeah, I'm guessing this is one of those albums that only get better with time. I'm very satisfied! Wouldn't be the worst thing to finish your career on, but I wouldn't be surprised if the guys would still record one more album after this. Oh, and we're doing a tier listing for this album's songs? OK. S TierLux Æterna A Tier72 Seasons, Screaming Suicide, Inamorata, If Darkness Had a Son B TierSleepwalk My Life Away, You Must Burn!, Too Far Gone? C TierCrown of Barbed Wire, Chasing Light, Room of Mirrors And for reference, tier listing for HWTSD. I've made a "MOP style" tracklist version now, consisting of the songs I like the most.
1. Lux Æterna 2. 72 seasons 3. You must burn! 4. If darkness had a son 5. Shadows follow 6. Screaming suicide 7. Inamorata 8. Too far gone?
Flows pretty well!

Is it just me, or the riffs in the beginning of Too Far Gone? are The End Of The Line's riffs regurgitated? Go check it out, if you haven't noticed it.
