Initial thoughts. - Horrible artwork, just horrible. - After 3 run throughs it’s in the top 10 of their worst songs - Not a fan of the album title and number of songs - Tour sounds kind of exiting, will probably buy tix for the Hamburg show - Not a fan of the video, is that white Tama drums or just the light that is fucking with me ? - Again these kind of songs are probably my least favourite kind, I just don’t like anything about it. Not one thing :( It’s oozing with Lords/Lightz vibes, but a lot worse. Riffs are extremely bland, solo awful, lyrics awful, drums plain Lars, is there even one tom hit in there ? Vocals meh. NOT COMPLAINING though, still very much exited

The cover would have had a gazillion times more impact if it had only had the crib with the bars all messed up slightly looking like crosses a la MOP with the sunshine in the background. Birth to death kind of thing. All that junk on the floor is obviously purposely placed just in the right way, too gimicky. I saw countless noobs in Graphic design school do this. Like here are 20 elements you must include, and they are layed out almost like a list, "look teacher, I included everything". Hopefully the included artwork with this theme is a little less "obvious" artistically.

Personally I don't mind the album cover image but it's not what we are uses to seeing that's for sure. I do like the singles image on spotify of the silhouette of the man with the m logo as the shadow.

Definitely sounds like Lords of Summer...hate that song, but is much better than it. This will be the worst song on the album, they're just messing with us. I bet Lars picked it.

You see alot of this in Contemporary art, just a load of objects grouped together. no one really cares about the meaning.

What's the verdict on the official boards? Faux creamed panties all around?

I love the song. I just found out about it and I've already heard it three times.

The only real complaint I have is the solo. Kirk's live slop has finally made its way into the studio.

I’m not a death blood and decapitated heads type, but they are a Metal band nonetheless, and their covers and album designs have been utterly shite since… Black or Justice. They really have a super weird and artsy way of presenting their albums, and I’m not digging it. It’s like they on purpose stray away from anything associated with the metal community.
They kinda tried with DM but they just ended up staring down a hairy vag. So weird.

Portals has been on a pretty steady rotation for me when painting or doing chores etc. The quality of that EP to this style song... I hope there's much much better offerings on the album.
I'm already over this song and I've heard it all of 3 times. The trill divebomb from the Curse of the Pharoah made me laugh. Meh, the song titles are cool, I'm interested l, but fear it's gonna sound like the leftovers from Hardwired, and that had some real shit make the cut.

The solo must be one of the worst ones ever recorded ? How can he compose stuff on his own ep that are so much better, I cannot comprehend it.

Simple: when he's doing solos on his own, Lars isn't there. I'm like 90% sure with a competent producer and no Lars in the room Kirk could produce much better solos even in Metallica. Instead it seems like he doesn't want to put in the effort since Lars will just arrange a completely different solo out of the takes Kirk has recorded, so he just does shitty improv.

Need some more songs at the level of No Leaf Clover and Minus Human. Couldn't have taken long to write those.

I like it more than any of the new Megadeth material. This. But my standards are so different for the two at this point. Dave tends to add a cringe section or vocal part to every song these days.

The solo is the weakest part of the song, as usual. I'm a a point now where I dread the solo section every time a new Metallica song is released.
I have to say I really like the album cover, which is not something I usually say about Metallica. The idea that your childhood (the 72 seasons) shapes who you are, and that you can choose to either embrace that or run away from it, is a pretty fascinating concept.

yeah first thoughts about the single for me was "It's electric" mixed with "LOS" also. Probably because double kick sounds very much like los verses. Kind of feel meh about the song overall. Hope it's one of the weaker on the album. Going for the ripe banana colors is such a weird choice too lol. HTSD artwork sucks to this day but it doesn't change the fact for me that I love 4-5 songs of that record.
And yeah. 77 minutes for 12 songs meaning its ~6,5 minutes per song on average. I think they are all going to be pretty diverse from each other.

Holy crap wasn't expecting this. Saw some post in the Aussie tour thread on Judas about a new tour announcement (with Australia missing out again), so I went over to the main Metallica page and saw yellow!
Literally had 20 mins to process this - initial thoughts: Love the new song, got that real classic heavy metal vibe, kinda like Atlas. The production sounds exactly like Hardwired which is...ok I guess, I think the snare is a bit toned down in the mix this time around. The solo is as generic as it gets. I really hope there's some great solos on the album, it's been 20+ years since the last truly great KH solo so not holding my breath.
While I like the song I hope it's not going to be another whole album of throwbacks, Hardwired was all just them recreating moments/vibes from their past, and DM was a straight up follow of the old template, so I hope they write some new stuff with inspirations they have now, not inspirations that had when they were 20.
Cover art, dislike. Why is everything bright yellow?! Wil have to get used to it, we're going to see "M72" on everything from Whiskey to Beach towels for the next 8 years.
And lastly...two years of tour dates announced, and nothing for Australia. Very disappointing, not even an acknowledgement that they haven't rescheduled the WW dates yet let alone that they completely excluded us from the M72 tour as well.

Also James singing "Lux Aeternaaaaaa!!!" sounds exactly like in Sabbra Cadabra "You know she makes me feel alright!".

I saw your post on the Met forums about how you weren't holding your breath for new music, just a few hours before the announcement, so I was super excited for you to see the news! Very sorry about the tour dates though. Australia has been this band's punching bag for the last 5 years now, it's pretty disappointing they haven't even acknowledged it.

Have y'all picked up on all the other intertextualities and allusions from the song yet? I think the drumming is strongly reminiscent of Overkill by Motörhead, the verses give me a vibe of Killing Time by Sweet Savage and also Lords of Summer, the chorus is straight up It's Electric, there's lyrical allusions to Motorbreath ("Full speed or nothing") and Lightning to the Nations ("Lightening the nation").
All in all, the overall feel is very much "a compilation of elements which make Metallica what it is".

The middle part is straight up from Hit the Lights.
To me it's like if Hit the Lights and Lord's of Summer had a baby, and Metallica covered it on Garage Inc.

Just found another allusion. The name Lux Æterna means "eternal light", and Astronomy has this line in the lyrics: "Call me Desdenova/eternal light".
I'm having a field day with this song!
