Chasing Light is flawed as a song, but it has many of my favorite moments on the album. "Without darkness, there's no light" followed by the fast riff (which I assume is Kirk's) is so good.

Inamorata would have been better had it ended fading out towards the end of last solo.

I've loved that riff ever since I heard it in that vid of the Hardwired tour. Definitely a highlight on the new album.

I listened yesterday for the first time in a bit for the anniversary. Great album, I think the flow of the tracklist still doesn't make much sense, which I never feel with Metallica. Kinda feel it's because like the songs they thought everyone would love (SS, Sleepwalk) aren't as strong as the songs everyone actually loves, specifically Too Far Gone.
Sleepwalk my Life Away also might be the most bloated song they've done. Why is it 7 minutes long. :'(

Sleepwalk sits weird with me. I don't really love it or like it, yet I'm always drawn to its bloated swagger, and that doom part near the end is always great.
If Darkness Had a Son is probably the one I've always skipped, and even after release I never really gave it more than a few spins. That one is the definition of Metallica bloatware. Could have been a cool 4-5 minutes, but no, it just goes on and on to nowhere, forever.

They should've made the studio version exactly that. Keep the long drum intro for live shows.

Can't believe it's been a year already.
Solid record. My expectation for the record was something on par with Hardwired To Self-Destruct, and I think they nailed it. Not sure any of the songs on 72 Seasons are as good as Halo or Spit... but there's no Murder One's on this record either. overall i'd say it's more consistent.
I agree that they missed on the sequencing with this record.
My favorites haven't changed; Chasing Light, Crown of Barbed Wire, Too Far Gone and Shadows Follow are still my Go-To songs.
my least favorite song is 72 Seasons (i recognize i am in the minority here). Burn and Sleepwalk are just OK.

Shadows Follow, Too Far Gone, and Lux are the 3 most cohesive songs on the album. I'm not that keen on Lux, but it has an enjoyable and predictable structure, and like the other 2 mentioned, doesn't overstay it's welcome or take you places you don't need to go to get to the same point.

This might be out there, but the Shadows Follow riff is like the audible equivalent to that dress picture from 10 years ago people thought were two different colors. Sometimes that riff sounds soooo goofy to my ears, and sometimes it hits so hard I think I’m listening to the black album for a moment.

Just thinking how you would rate 72S in terms of the other albums. It's obviously not as good as the first 5 or DM/HWTSD for that matter. I'd even say Load is better overall. That puts it in the same bracket as Reload and St. Anger imo. Saying that i still kinda like it.

Which songs do you regularly skip? Lux Æterna You Must Burn None, mostly because I seldom know what song is playing untill James starts singing

Picked up a guitar for the first time in years. Jammed some songs from 72 Seasons, for the first time actually.
It's quite embarrassing but I only just realised that the awesome lead riff thingy in Burn is a replica of the intro 😂 How the hell have I not noticed that before.

You’re not alone lol Edit: Kimbo I think you made me realize why I like that song. Same reason that I love Load, and it’s James’ ability to “morph” riffs that are so similar on paper, but hit the ears totally differently.

Justice is my favorite record Black Album is next St Anger and Reload are at the bottom
everything in between is a giant pick'em pile depending on my mood.
im def not one of those annoying gate keeping metallica/metal fans who holds the first few albums as some impenetrable iron clad holy grail.
not even close.
MOP gets largely inflated because it's cliff's swan song. it's like heath ledger before heath ledger. "died a hero before becoming the villain" syndrome

There’s nothing inflated about MOP, it’s a top 3 best ever metal record. It’s just become as overplayed as the black album. It’s a shame that it’s suddenly being looked a little down on from certain perspectives. It’s been drowning in its own popularity for years now.
