I'm gonna like this much more than HWTSD, I can see that. I like the bluesy riffs and more diverse vocal lines.
One thing I liked the most about this new song is vocals and bass. James is going for Garage Inc. type of vocals this time. I hear It's Electric everytime I listen to the verses.
By the way, song structure is very straight forward and this has been an issue since the St. Anger. I love how smooth it is.

It’s clunky and disjointed as hell. The transitions between verse and pre chorus and chorus is non existent, it’s like they gave up figuring it out. It sounds taped together in pro tools.

The song structure, as I'm listening to it more, has more of a cyclical kind of thing going on. I don't consider the bridge and one liner chorus as the bridge and one liner chorus anymore because they don't come back consistently, they are parts that pop back up here and there. You have all these variations of verses going on, the song is very different, but all ties together in a way. Feels like a bit of a roller coaster with curves and drops catching you off guard when you think the ride is done if that makes sense. Sort of like thoughts of suicide...
The happy 70s vibe of the intro and other parts does remind me of Sabbath, Supernaut style stuff mixed with modern sounding Metallica. It has grown on me.
I can enjoy it now, same with Lux. Can't say they'll ever be my favorite songs, far from it, but instead of question and cringing while listening like I did before, now it's gives a little kick, a little spark, and the ride is fun enough to enjoy for what it is.

Now that i'm more used to it, great song. 8/10. With better solos it would be a 9. At least they aren't sloppy. Just plain old blues scales. Keep 'em coming. So how do you rank mop, blackened and creep ? 10, 9,5 and 9.

I don't want to say this but it's not the song that is hated most of the time. It's the sound. All of newly released metal songs sound like they are generated by AI. Straight forward or complex, doesn't matter, if SS or Lux had the sound of albums from 80s to 90s, much more people'd like it.

With this modern sound, everybody would be complaining. If they had a "Black Album" style production, people would be praising it. Another thing that won't change is James voice. I like his new vocal style, but it's very different than what it used to be. Everything sounds way more melodic and commercial. With that said, i really like the new singles. Just needed better production, IMO.

The song is a grower. I'm getting Atlas vibes but this track is more to the point, without an overly long intro or unnecessary sections. It's true James is pretty much the one carrying it, though.
The only issue I have is the bluesy tone, very NWOBHM, of the main riff and Kirk's solos; it's "happy" sounding. They need to sound menacing, evil.
EDIT: perhaps the uplifting tone ties in with the positive message. In that case, point taken.

I'm so into the new tracks now it's not funny. I don't know what happened. Something shifted over the past day and I now have these songs on repeat. They're so good 😂 I've seen the light 💥

But like Wolfish is saying it’s way too happy, and if that’s on purpose then well done I would say. Then it’s just not for me. I don’t like happy Metallica, I much prefer menacing Metallica.

I would say it is equal to a song like AJFA.
If Justice was released tomorrow with modern sound, everyone would be shiting on the happy intro, scream "just start the fucking song already after its 20 minute intro, complain about the solos, say the riffs are too repetitive, and that the song just drags and drags on, and "dude, I can't hear the bass", etc.
I like AJFA, it's a "classic" but you know everyone would be complaining LoL.

I was really baked the other night, taking a walk with headphones, and the songs just sounded so awesome, all the stupid little snare fills and everything, even that little part when it's just guitars and then you hear Rob kick in with his little deedledeedoo thing, then I hear the bass LoL (before that part I don't notice it at all)

I will never understand the amount of obsessive complaining when it comes to metallica fans.
It is absurd!
I understand people do not like the new track, of course it is not up there with the classics that people have loved and grown familiar with over the decades, but I see people here complaining about the mixing decisions, the arrangement, the lack of gain on James guitar, lyrics… the list goes on.
What qualifies you to say your knowledge of how you would mix this record is better? Why should you dictate the guitar tone James Fucking Hetfield decided on?
I never see this with other bands. Log release an album, fans are happy. Rammstein release? Fans are happy.
It has been like this on here for years, going back to 06 when I had my first account. It is so tiresome and I don’t understand the sense of entitlement of ripping everything they do apart.
They will never release albums like MOP, AJFA, black again. That’s like expecting 80 years old Bob Dylan to release Blone on blonde pt 2 again. Not gonna happen. The expectations should be realistic.
Enjoy them while they’re still with us. 72 Seasons doesn’t have to be the album of the year. I’m just glad we’re hearing 60 year old metallica have a bit of fun and still feel the need to release music.
We all know they could literally tour the next 5 years out playing sandman, one, mop and bellz and not do a thing.
/end rant

Opinions on music are not “complaints”. If you can’t handle people expressing their opinions about Metallica music that’s not just blind praise then I’d suggest Metallica internet forums are not for you. Especially this one.
You must live a pretty sheltered life if you’ve never seen people on the internet express negative opinions about other bands or art in general. Ever read a review? Or watched an interview with a musician? Read an article about music? Visited IMDB and looked at user rating? Watched coverage of any single sport in the world with commentary? Read the comments on a YouTube video of a bands live performance? Actual spoken to a human being face to face about a movie, album, song, TV show?
Someone saying they don’t like James Hetfield’s guitar tone on a new song doesn’t mean they hate James Hetfield, or think they know better than James Hetfield, or that they’re going to write a letter of complaint to Metallica about James Hetfield’s guitar tone, it just means they don’t like James Hetfield’s guitar tone on that particular song. It’s ok if people don’t like something you like.

I will never understand the amount of obsessive complaining when it comes to metallica fans. It is absurd! >> Have you never interacted with a Metallica fan before? Obsessive complaining (or praising...) is kinda what we do.I understand people do not like the new track, of course it is not up there with the classics that people have loved and grown familiar with over the decades, but I see people here complaining about the mixing decisions, the arrangement, the lack of gain on James guitar, lyrics… the list goes on. >> Well, people have opinions on lots of areas that they want to voice.
What qualifies you to say your knowledge of how you would mix this record is better? Why should you dictate the guitar tone James Fucking Hetfield decided on? >> Well I studied (but never graduated from) a Music Technology degree, have been in bands and recorded albums since the mod-90s. But none of that is relevant. Beacue, my issue with the mix or his tone is an OPINION based on many many personal factors of personal preference. That's how opinions work.
I never see this with other bands. Log release an album, fans are happy. Rammstein release? Fans are happy. >> Looking forward to seeing your empirical data to back-up up this opinion (there's that word again...)It has been like this on here for years, going back to 06 when I had my first account. It is so tiresome and I don’t understand the sense of entitlement of ripping everything they do apart. >> Hate to break it to you, but this is the official Metallica forums that you are referring to. Loko at the URL. You think Metallica would ever have a message board with that URL - ".boards.net"? This is a forum set up (many years ago) to provide a place for those to go who aren't a fan of the "Everything is awesome" vibe of the official forums. Feel free to head over there: forums.metallica.com/They will never release albums like MOP, AJFA, black again. That’s like expecting 80 years old Bob Dylan to release Blone on blonde pt 2 again. Not gonna happen. The expectations should be realistic. >> No one has said anything like that. We're not idiots. They couldn't release albums like that again if they tried. They're too far into their career and too rich from those kids who wrote those albums. None of us are expecting MOP2. What some of us are expecting, though, is for the band to release something that at least sounds exciting or engaging and not some cut and paste nonsense with the drums too loud. When I make reference to wanting a Load style album. the key word is STYLE. Not Load 2. But the same STYLE. Personally, I think the "thrash" songs they write now are kinds boring. Lyrics are kinda meh too. But again: OPINION.Enjoy them while they’re still with us. 72 Seasons doesn’t have to be the album of the year. I’m just glad we’re hearing 60 year old metallica have a bit of fun and still feel the need to release music. >> Me too. You are mistaking personal critical opinion as hate. Not so. I love this band. Will do until either they are me shuffle off this mortal coil. I pre-ordered the new album. I have 3 formats of it coming in April. Have all the deluxe box sets. Spent thousands of vinyl and CDs and gigs and t-shirts and shit. I'm glad they're still here and wanting to make new music rather than just touring the hots all the time. But that doesn't mean that I have to like everything they release. We all know they could literally tour the next 5 years out playing sandman, one, mop and bellz and not do a thing. >> See above/end rant /end rebuttal

I actually think its good that people have put down here in text their analysis of the songs and how they feel about it. I don't think anyone is really being a dick about the way they do it as well.
I also like seeing how people's opinions have changed, for better or worse, over multiple listens.

Commentary and criticism on the band's choices re: arrangement, mixing, guitar tone, lyrics, solos, anything really is the exact opposite of being a hater or a bitter asshole who doesn't like things anymore and wants to shit on other people for it.
If you truly dislike something or think a band sucks, the most you'll do or say is dismiss anything they put out without hearing it once or yell at them on Twitter that they haven't released any good music since 1991 or whatever. You're definitely not gonna write multiple paragraphs of text over it or offer in-depth critique about their arrangement choices.
For some reason people don't get this and assume any even vaguely negative comment is an assault on the band and its fanbase and it puzzles me why that is.

Metallica is my favorite band of all time and it probably always will be. There are definitely people who blindly hate everything the band does but you won't find those people here. When we criticize their work it's because we know they can do better.

It’s ok if people don’t like something you like. I understand the points you make, but with Metallica fans I sometimes fine the sense of self entitlement to shit on everything is more extreme that I witness in ornater band fan groups in my opinion. As I mentioned, I was on this forum in 06 for a number of years and then left. I am aware of how it is here. My sheltered life as working as a music producer, music analyst, educator, film composer and artist is very open to the idea of critique, thank you very much ;) I have no problem with critique. What I see here is simply comments of unrealistic expectations (mop2.0, its not the black album etc) placed on a band of artists who are entitled to change and do whatever they see fit. I am not arguing that people should like everything they release. I certainly don't (Don't have much time for DM, Reload or KEA for example). I am simply commenting that Metallica fans community seem to shit on their supposed favourite band more than other fans do. And I understand it is their right to do so. It just blows my mind. They are artists. They eb and flow through different styles. My point wasn't about people liking or hating something I like. It is just about the constant false expectation and bitter overtones I see. But, as you said; people are entitled to do that. And I get that!
