Thoughts on the new song: meh.
- Snare is WAY too loud and ‘samey’ - Riff is forgettable - More boring boxed blues licks from Kirk (save for the rather cool dissonant run at the end of one of the breaks) - Cluttered and confusing structure - Where’s the chorus? They seem to have forgotten how to write one (musically). Disagree? Think about how many recognisably definable choruses they had in songs up until 2000… exactly! - Lyrics are dull. More suicide content? Fab. - Overall mix is harsh and brittle.
Maybe it’ll grow on me in time, but so far the first two tracks released have done nothing for me. Lux was Hardwired Pt 2 (modern “thrasher” that they really should stay away from these days) and this is just… dunno. Bland.
It’s no secret that I am a rather large Load fanboi. I had really hoped that they would settle back into that vein AND tone. But then again. I guess I’m no different from those wanting Puppets 2.
I’ll certainly give it the time and patience it deserves. I still have two copies of the vinyl and 1 copy CD n preorder and I’m not selling my Munich ticket. So I’m still on the ride… but perhaps I’ve just nipped off to the restaurant car for a sandwich. /convoluted metaphor

I like the singles from 72 seasons better than the singles from Hardwired. Moth into flame and others sounded too copy/paste. Opin .. no, you just are an ass-hole.

After a few listens there are good parts to SS (the main verse and the talking part).

Four-five listens in, and... It's fine, I guess. Pretty forgettable still, but not actively offensive. Still strong Beyond Magnetic vibes, with some shades of Moth Into Flame/Now That We're Dead. Paint-by-numbers modern Metallica. Definitely one of the weaker songs they've released in the last 20 years or so.
Next!

I just listened to the first version of Lords of Summer the other day and had to smack my head. Why, when actually tasked with editing down a song, did they cut out the best part for the album version? Yet they can sit there in the studio and listen to Screaming Suicide, with it's stupid intro, all these disjointed parts, and yet again a cheesy one liner "chorus" if you can call it that even, they sit there and say "Yeah, this is awesome 👍".
I just don't get it.
This song is a 6, could have been an 8 if they could swallow their pride and get a real producer or outside opinion to tell them when something sucks or needs more work. Bob was great for the Black Album, but quickly became another yes man in the world of Metallica for the next decade.

Good pick on the Speed King comparison FightFireWithStAnger , can hear that too. Not a bad thing, loved when Kirk went all Blackmore during Kill the King cover. jorn Agree its a 7-ish out of 10 for me on release day. Good post, but next time post here first then cut/paste back there, we luv you more ya know ;) even the most loyal can make bad decisions sometimes:) I feel like it won't be a grower. But we'll see in the context of the album. Honestly, Hardwired singles undoubtly got me very excited and raised my interest - and the album delivered - but these two songs didn't get me excited as much as I thought they would.

But then again. I guess I’m no different from those wanting Puppets 2. Interesting. I thought one of the positive things about the song is that it has a very straightforward and clear structure. Nothing confusing or unncessary to my ears. This is something they kinda fail to solve since St.Anger. Not that it is a big thing but for example, many Death Magnetic songs could have been stronger with more efficient editing(in terms of the song structure, not the sound). This song doesn't suffer from that. I agree on Load-ish vibes. Some parts of the previous album gave me exactly that despite the very different production.

Need to listen to this a few more times, heard it about 3 times now. At first I was actually quite happy since it was easily a lot better than Lux. Which is not saying much though.
I'm super baffled that no one is telling Lars to pipe the fuck down... Even if you were the world greatest drummer, your drums had no business being so damn loud in the mix, let alone Lars's super underwhelming drumming. It's so annoying. I love that Rob was so present though, I felt the rumble.
The most positive thing was, weirdly enough, that when I heard it the second time I didn't press stop after the song, so Lux came right after. Somehow that just felt right and I had a better feeling with Lux than I've ever had before. Also, I don't really like anything in particular with SS, but I kind of feel like it's a decent song anyways. That's also weird.

It's the opposite for me. Atlas and Moth are top tier songs not just on the album but in general. Opinions are like HR ...

When I heard Dream No More on Hardwired, I wanted more songs to have that feel. Especially with their age and possible retirement of songs, I think that suits them. But this isn't as bad as I was expecting. I'll reserve my final judgment when the album comes out.

What if the album is actually a collection of songs with different tones? Not sure if there have been albums like that before. It may take away from cohesion but given the theme here, it would make sense to have different "slices" of life and music, as a sort of anthology.

Musically these first two songs are identical in tone/vibe/atmosphere so I don’t think that’s the case. I really hope we get some variety and not all samey sounding stock stuff.

Lux as a first single makes sense. In out, catchy, says "Hey we're back!"
Second single SS ...? Maybe this is a case of James putting his foot down and insisting that this be the second single because the subject is important, and important enough to him for him to fight that it be released.

I think this is why I'm not fully getting into this. And because it's feeling too close to Atlas. I really do like it though, just not a love yet.

I’m liking it less and less :(
First time : Very hyped Second time: I still like it, looking for the riffs though Third ltime: No good riffs, no good fills, still like it though Fourth time: Diggijg in there, really noticing all the super disjointed parts and the shitty soloing. Parts I previously liked quickly fades
I’m afraid to give it a fifth spin :(

And for fucks sake, why is James’s guitar once again way too low in the mix and why have he forgot his distortion button :(
Lars’s high-hat and snare volume 12 Kirks’s Jimmy Hendrix wannabe licks volume 10 James’s rhythm guitar 4
Insert confused smiley

Now that i'm more used to it, great song.
8/10.
With better solos it would be a 9. At least they aren't sloppy. Just plain old blues scales.
Keep 'em coming.

After having listened to it more I'm slightly more positive about it. I still think they're capable of much better but it's an alright song. I like Lux more though.
