Crew member? They say in the statement a member of the Metallica family, if it was James or something I think they'd say so, plus they haven't cancelled the shows for the next week or so so maybe they need to find a replacement and it was too short notice for this show? Sucks big time, I'd be biting my nails down to the bone right now if I had tickets for Friday.
I think this is most likely scenario...not a band member but someone they rely on and now need time to source a suitable replacement.
And this folks (more people on Metforums) is why somewhere like Australia is too risky to include in tour destinations for now.

So I just watched some of the recent tour videos on YouTube and wow, the band is on fire these days. James sounds great. Lars is playing better than he has in a while. This is awesome.

They did the same thing back in 2016, brought out Cyanide, Unforgiven 3 etc... played them for a couple of shows then went back to Roam, Bells, Fuel, etc... |

Yeah it always feels like they’re about to start shaking things up, then just revert back to normalcy. It makes it cooler when they do pop a rarity up but worse for all of us watching the sets from home. I really love this set format though. |

It kinda helps not following anything they do anymore.
Before I knew exactly what song they were about to perform, from the guitars, placements, interactions and so forth.
This time I had no idea what songs would come, other than Whiplash in the beginning.

It's just harder for bands like Metallica that I'm at 'superfan' level for. |
