My random thought for today is that I really liked the House of the Rising Sun cover they played in late 2020. If we're lucky enough to see another Garage album I'd love to have this on it. My random response for the day: No thanks.

There were a couple mistakes and sloppy parts on the live version that would be worked out in the studio, and overall I love where they took it. I'm still holding out hope for a Garage 2 in the next couple of years. I wouldn't be too surprised if it was partially recorded already from rehearsal audio at HQ. I need studio versions of songs like Hole in the Sky and Rapid Fire. The soundcheck version of Rapid Fire with James was in heavy rotation for me a few years ago. More amped up versions of some of the acoustic songs would be awesome too. Veteran of the Psychic Wars and Brother of Arms are two fantastic songs, I just hate how they've never played them without any electric additions. Kirk on electric + James on acoustic would make all of their acoustic shows feel a lot more put together. They did bring back Veteran in 2018 from 2007 so they haven't completely forgotten about them. Something like this could be cool. 1. Hole in the Sky 2. Clampdown 3. Veteran of the Psychic Wars 4. House of the Rising Sun 5. Sucking My Love 6. Rapid Fire 7. In My Life 8. Let It Loose 9. The Chase is Better Than the Catch 10. Brother in Arms They've done all these before. Some not for decades but they can do it! Even though I can't really see them doing a studio version of In My Life.

..and while I like the suggestion, how about stop looking backwards and leave those songs as we have them and move on to another batch of covers.

Speaking of cover songs, has the band ever played Iron Maiden's "Prowler" live in full?

I love that jam, it sounds so good. With some Kill the King production treatment in the studio, this would be legendary 🤤

Here's a random thought I had reading this thread: they could easily do a "modern" Garage Inc. release by just fucking showing up at HQ, jamming on some song they like for a few days till it sounds good, recording it and then just putting it out after a few weeks in mixing and mastering. Rinse and repeat. Anything they feel strongly about, like "fuck yeah that sounds good, let's put that out". Prowler for example, I'm pretty sure they could play the whole song in their sleep as long as James has a lyrics sheet in front of him.
Why not just do that, take the pressure off, just record and release without overthinking it, fussing about new material or whatever, like back in the old days when their cover B-sides or EPs or even albums used to take very little time to record? It's a great boost for engagement too when you have regular new material drops and there's no commitment of a whole new album or EP.

...the original $5.98 garage EP is one of their best releases. Done super fast and sounds great

They've even stated in interviews or the Garage Inc. Booklet that with covers they can't really get bogged down by big decision making, overdoing things, and getting overwhelmed by the grandeur of a "Metallica" release. They just go in and have fun jamming some songs they love. It is the obvious choice for a quick fix in this world wide "lull" so you can count on them do do the complete opposite.

AFAIK there is no difference in sound quality. I suspect that there might be some work done on it for the deluxe box set.

Maybe their new band mission is to set out to write, record and put out an album like they did in the '80s -- take 2 to 4 months? The band has been fond of reacting to their previous M.O., so this time they should stop overthinking and overproducing things. After all, I Disappear, Hardwired, Minus Human, and No Leaf Clover were put together in hours/days, right?

Does anyone ever go back and listen to Demo Magnetic? I'm constantly surprised by James' voice. It's very unique from what came before and even after. I'm kind of sad he couldn't channel that voice in an official finalized album. The drums also sound much better than what we ended up getting.

Has been awhile, but reckon ive listened to that just as much as proper album. Will dig it out again for another listen

I'm still annoyed they changed disc 3 of Hardwired for live stuff last minute. I'm sure it was to save it for the box set but I want to hear how those songs came together more than most songs from the last 20 years.

Bunch of riffs and work in progress. Switched out to a record store Day show (I think) and the handful of cover songs from that time.

Edit: I also just noticed this is when the original tracklist was still a thing. I like the final tracklist much more, but it does make disc one waaaaay stronger than disc two vs if they kept Dream No More on disc two.

I'm much happier with the covers, though my 3 disc edition has still yet to be removed from the case save for one time, I just ordered it out of impulse when they opened the pre-ordering. I ripped a handful of tracks into mp3s and never looked at it again. The additional CDs I got when I bought concert tickets I just gave out to friends. It has been years since I've used physical media, My DVD of all the Metallica videos I have used (the case) to roll my joints on for the past 5 years after I retired a Smashing pumpkins cd case for the same purpose. They layers of crystal on it now are insane... So much powder...

Cheers for finding that, much appreciated....it triggered my memory after seeing the list of working titles.
Now I want them.
I have used that 3rd disc a bit in the car. I like the covers, shame about the drums in Blind Man
