Probably an extremely hot take, but I've come to realize I don't think For Whom the Bell Tolls is that great outside of its intro. The intro is iconic obviously, but everything after that is simply alright to me.

The intro is iconic obviously, but everything after that is simply alright to me. I think the only thing it has going for it is how old it is. It's very stock as far as the genre goes and a lot of bands have very similar songs to it, but Bellz was the first one. I don't think it needs to be a staple at every show, but I enjoy seeing it.

I’ll only ever listen to a Jason/Cliff version these days. I think Rob’s tone for the intro is garbage.

I'm still shocked that during the bass auditions, those other players played the intro the way they did. The Bells intro is the equivalent of spelling your name correctly on an exam as far as auditioning for Metallica would go, and asides from Rob, they all failed miserably.

I’d forgotten about that until you mentioned it. Some really shit renditions. Especially (I think) the guy from the Cure who played it a whole octave down. If there is one time when you don’t add your own version of something it’s during the signature moment of the song.

It's cool but I'd say MOP, One, and Sandman are the only three songs worthy of being played at every concert.

Wtf guys? Bellz is awesome!!! Not the best, not the worst. A staple for any metal band starting out, fun, easy AF, and the open chords during the verses are great for singing over and playing guitar at the same time. Live, in person, it still excites me. S&M 1 is epic. Album version has grown stale over the years.

Buh buh buh but the new visuals are so cool.
I could deal with it if Hetfield dropped all those silly no no no screams.

Yeah the visuals on the backscreens for One are really impressive these days.
Funny how excited people were getting with those little flash bombs in the early 90s shows....all looks a little amateur now.

I was just referring to what it was like 30 years ago and now watching some of those black album era shows and seeing the piddly little explosions across the stage. Edit : just saw the other posts...gotcha now

I had missed that they've released the Napster leak version of it officially. Cool! Part of the Vinyl club deal. My copy and a bunch of others received a single that was cut at 33rpm on one side instead of 45rpm, so they had to repress a batch for replacements

Yeah, they are pretty good at resolving issues quickly. The replacement vinyl came in a plain slip rather than the full sleeve with artwork.
EDIT - the chance to subscribe for year #2 of Vinyl Club is in the next day or so, for anyone interested
