It’s fucking amazing live. Better than on the album. Never really noticed the riff in the chorus was THAT awesome. Drums are more laid back and James and Rob sounds HEAVY during the middle / solo section. Well done boys! The riff on the chorus was love at first sight to me, since the very first time I listened to the song. So simple, yet so melodic and fluid, with a little grit from those sliding 4ths intervals. My only complaint is that in the album it is a bit buried in the mix to give James voice more room. But live it sounds so massive!

You Must Burn, over the past few weeks is the one the is constantly popping up and playing in my head. I absolutely hope it gets an acoustic version played at some point. It would work so well.

The middle pre solo section from 3:40 is a top 3 moment of the whole album. Especially as that evil lick kicks in from 4:25, then goes into the solo (which is one of the better solos on the album), with the heavy AF riff continuing behind it, then back to the evil sounding bit again. One of the most badass pieces of music they’ve written in 20+ years.

Not sure about Metallica's slow plodding songs: Burn, Dream, Human get a thumbs down. SBT and Thingy are awesome though.

72S:
Best album since the Black album. Unprecedented, unbelievable vocals (post Load), incredible energy, songs flow perfectly from one to next, songs sound very unique, tracklist doesn't follow any previous album. This feels like their culmination, or rather the continuance of their ungodly, superb, never dull career. I expected some form of greatness on this album because they always come through. This time it wasn't 3 or 4 stellar songs, it's the entire album that is rock solid!!! Long live the masters of rock & metal!

Most songs sound the same. I only recognize them by the lyrics, not the intro or riffs or whatever. As soon as James sarts singing I know what song it is.

^ Hyperbole at it's worst. "best since black album" ....is it really hyperbole though? i mean... we know it's better than the loads and St Anger I think most agree it's better than Hardwired. So that just leaves Death Magnetic... and i just got done reading entire thread in the Polls section of people slamming on DM and calling it a mere coaster in their record collection.

I might prefer HW to 72S, i think it has more memorable songs, it's a close call though.

Disc two sinks HW too much for me, but comparing disc one to 72S is a close call. Not a fair comparison, but goddamn that disc one. I spent a lot of 2016-7 listening to Hardwired on CD before I had a newer car so they'll forever be two little albums in my head.

I just think as a whole, 72S is rock solid. James' vocals haven't sounded this good since Black/Load. That was the big worry back before DM came out. I remember watching 2006 tour videos and I cringed at how he sang everything. Somehow he has healed or tuned his voice back to the old days (sorta). That's the biggest impression from 72S I get, along with not following the same recipe of tracklist order or song structure. My favorites of the previous 2 albums are All Nightmare Long, Spit out the Bone, Atlas Rise and Halo on Fire. I freakin love those songs. DM was great when it came out because we were starving for new material that wasn't St. Anger-esque. Hardwired has stand out songs and I'll take it over DM as a whole. I play guitar but I don't meddle much with alternate tunings. Some of the songs on 72S sound like they have different tunings (drop d or whatever), and that's cool as shit that they did that. For instance, Shadows Follow and Inamorata have chords I've never heard anywhere before...correct me if I'm wrong. And another thing, I love Load - 2x4, King, Hero, Bleeding, Outlaw. I just think this album stands out incredibly considering their age, James' voice and the energy. Peace out.

The splitting of Hardwired into discs is annoying to me. Since the vinyl had a different song arrangement that was better than the digital and CD release, it's hard for me to adhere to the "disc one or disc two is better than the other" thing.
I personally feel Hardwired has simply better songs, or at least more songs that aren't just ok. Both albums I skip two songs, but overall, Hardwired just does what it does better. Dm, had it sounded better, would have songs that blow everything they've done post 2000 out of the water. Life and Nightmare are two songs that are better than anything off 72 Seasons and Hardwired.
But as far as Hardwired or 72 Seasons having better songs than the Loads, I don't buy it. More metal, sure, but better? Hardly.

This is really cool if you're into these sort of things. The guy took AI young Hetfield vocals and buried them under the original vocals giving it a weirdo Justice/Black album vibe. The music he redid. Sounds cool.

Not gonna lie I don't usually like those too much but that particular one made me appreciate Shadows much more. The drier production works really well, especially in that intro.

we know it's better than the loads "We" don't know anything of the sort. Load is leagues better than 72S. But seeing as how you lumped in Load and Reload as one album I'll allow the distinction that it could be better than Reload.

I think ReLoad (outside of the first few songs and Fixxxer) dilutes people's overall opinions of Load. Cure is probably my least favorite Metallica song but outside of that, Load is a great listen front to back.
Load > 72S > ReLoad

Certainly the songs were all written at the same time but the strongest ones (IMO) got released first. I prefer Cure over PTM but it's subjective.

I have a soft spot for that song. But if I'm talking more objectively, dropping Cure and PTM would put Load at consistent 8's, 9's, and 10's for me. I love me some Thorn Within and Ronnie.

Load has its own identity. I have never heard that kind of music elsewhere. It's weird. Sure, it's rock music, but it is unique. You can say that it has flavors of AIC, COC, Danzig etc in it, but what does it really sound like? It's metal, rock, blues all kind of mashed together with the Metallica gravy poured all over it. I have heard a bazillion albums/bands that sound like the rest of the Metallica catalogue, but not really for Load.
