What happened? Were you banned? Welcome here! Temporarily, yes. There was a thread over there discussing when the album was going to leak, and I was actually one of the 1st people to find it out there as the songs started trickling out. I was giving my detailed first impressions on the songs and the album as I heard things. I guess the moderation team felt we went a little hard on the discussions of the leakage, and some people were even dropping very heavy hints openly in the thread about where it could be found. I didn't on the board, but I did send some people some DMs pointing them in the direction, I'm assuming that's why I was one of the ones who got popped. So, the thread got nuked, and me and I'm assuming several others got a temporary suspension until the 24th. Sucks, but understandable. I've had an account lurking here for the last year or two, just rarely posted. Good to see you here again!

I wasn't going to post my thoughts until tomorrow but I do kind of want to laugh at how different my opinions are come the weekend. Wow. What an album. And not just the songs, the album as a whole. I don't even know the last time a Metallica record picked up so strongly in the back half. I'd even go as far to say Too Far Gone>Mirrors>Inamorata is the best run on the whole thing.
IDHAS really feels like the outlier here. That gave me the "more of the same" impression, but besides the production, 72 Seasons stands firmly on its own against Hardwired. I wouldn't say it's a concept album, but it's the closest the band has come in terms of consistent lyrical theming, hold for maybe Justice. I'm glad I listened on my own first because I blurted out a "FUCK YEAH JAMES" multiple times during the last two songs. If anything, I was a little surprised at how long it took the album to go from good to absolutely great.
Death Magnetic was embracing the past. Hardwired felt like building on Death Magnetic with less emphasis on mirroring everything they did in the 80s. This feels fresh and new for Metallica, while still having a classic feel. They took more notes from Priest, Maiden, and other NWOBHM bands more than they did from Master of Puppets. I love to see how at almost 60 they can still iterate on themselves.
Love: - Lux Aeterna - Crown of Barbed Wire - Too Far Gone? - Room of Mirrors - Inamorata
Like: - You Must Burn - 72 Seasons - IDHAS
Meh: - Shadows Follow - I think I'm plain wrong about this but it didn't click with me at all - Chasing Light - Screaming Suicide - it's fine, but "best live song on the album" my buttcheeks - Sleepwalk My Life Away - I don't actually remember this one too well

Came across this. We were speculating a while back, it offers a little bit more information. 😉 My theory on this is still that they doubled the little riff before the last chorus while they were recording vocals, but after they recorded bass. It happens once everywhere else, but makes sense with the vocals to double there.

Alright I listened to it. Inamorata is nearly a masterpiece. However, the middle section is almost ruined by Lars' constant hi-hats. It's such a shame. But the main reason why that section feels fresh is that the album is very monotone. It fell into the trap I expected it to: It's filled with heavy mid-tempo stuff so when we get something that resembles a ballad even a little bit it feels awesome. All the songs blend together and in the end few of them end up standing out. I've said this before, but Hardwired and now this album desperately needed ballads as palette cleansers.
I've also said I felt DM was a more consistent album than Hardwired while Hardwired had higher highs than DM. At this stage I feel the album is just as inconsistent as Hardwired, but I don't think it reaches the heights of Moth, Dream etc.
Too Far Gone is the first one on the album I felt was an instant earworm. If you ask me today, I think it's among the best songs on the album alongside 72 Seasons, Lux Æterna, and Inamorata.
I expect I'll be more positive about the album as it settles over the next few days, weeks and months, but I definitely remember fanboying at more points during Hardwired. Maybe it's just me getting older. Either way I'm looking forward to hearing some of these live, although there are a ton of notes I have a hard time seeing James confidently hitting on stage.

Also Did anyone else instantly recognize the Crown of Barbed Wire main riff? It's definitely Kirk's, he played part of it in a tuning room video. I always thought it was cool. I wish they used the full riff honestly.

Got bored of waiting, looked up the leak. I like how 72 Seasons actually sounds sort of new to my ears since I only ever listened to it once. Still a pretty incoherent arrangement with incredibly annoying non-transitions all over the place.

First time listening to the whole album. Apart from the single songs, which have definitely grown on me, many of the other songs on the album are somewhat... meh. But the ending trio of Too Far Gone?, Room of Mirrors and Inamorata is pretty damn awesome. I especially love Room of Mirrors. It's one of the most cohesive sounding songs of the album, and I absolutely love the harmonized guitar solo.
And yeah, Inamorata is a beast. It's another one that sounds like it was written as a whole song from start to finish, not stitched together from random riffs here and there. It definitely doesn't feel like 11 minutes and change, it just flows effortlessly. And Kirk's ending solo is really, really good. Very impressive stuff.
One of the funniest things on the album is the verse riff on Sleepwalk My Life Away - it's fucking Enter Sandman! Of course, thematically it makes sense, since it's about sleeping... But come on. That's just lazy. :D
This is a good album. I assume it might be a grower, maybe I'll learn to appreciate the songs that didn't make a great first impression. The hihat overdrive is pretty hilarious throughout, but I actually learned to tune it out, it doesn't even bother me on the title song anymore. And even though I didn't think much of Screaming Suicide and If Darkness Had a Son at first, I'm beginning to like them.
Love: Lux Æterna Screaming Suicide Room of Mirrors Inamorata
Like: 72 Seasons If Darkness Had A Son Too Far Gone?
All the other ones I couldn't tell one way or the other. I need to give them a few more spins.

Cinema experience was awesome, good vibes some dudes yelled random funny stuff.after each song I did my best James "yeah" impression (my gf disapproved). This album is interedting I liked it, I need to really dig into it.
And Lux Aterna is really catchy, although I went to the bathroom during it.

Went to the cinema. I have a lot to get of my chest. Let me start of by saying the sound was not satisfactory at all. The same cinema where I saw S&M2, so I should have expected it. Anyways, my thoughts:
1. 72 Season - Appreciate this as an opener. A really good Metallica song. 8/10
2. Shadows Follow - Refreshing, new, unique. Loved this one. 9/10
3. Screaming Suicide - My least favourite of the singles, gained a new appreciation for it in the cinema because it has not been on repeated listens I have to say. 7/10
4. Sleepwalk My Life Away - They can't get away with using a variation of the Murder One riff in the pre-chorus. It ruins so much for me with this. And it sucks too, cause the rest of it is not bad. 6/10
5. You Must Burn! - Instant earworm and a really good song. 9/10
6. Lux Æterna - Just a well constructed song. Love it still. 9/10
7. Crown of Barbed Wire - Not memorable at all, I thought at first listen. Just a mess. Again riffs that really doesn't go anywhere. Cool chorus though. 6/10
8. Chasing Light - What the fuck was up with that video? Would have been better with a black background only. Unique riffing and really special vocal delivery lifts the song for me, but I really had to listen to it afterwards to appreciate it. 7/10
9. If Darkness Had a Son - My second favourite single. I just love that main riff. They obviously do as well, cause it's repeated way too much. Anyways, a banger that will be awesome live. 8/10
10. Too Far Gone? - Instant earworm x 10. What a great song and great main riff. 10/10
11. Room of Mirrors - Let down by the video again. At second listen, love the vocal delivery, story mode that really suits it. 8/10
12. Inamorata - Just had to close my eyes here. Up there with their best. Didn't know they had it in them still. That breakdown is out of this world. Could have been 15 minutes, would still have flown by. 10/10
Closing thoughts: An album that needs to be listened to a lot to really appreciate it. Some of the melody work, harmonies and details are so catchy and unique and so Metallica - I wish every song on the album had it. The weakest link is obviously Lars. That snare use... the hi-hat didn't bother me as much as I though, but that snare... Kirk actually is on point several times. The vocals are up there with Hetfields best ever. The Garage Inc feel gave me goosebumps several times. Rob is Rob, steady as all hell.
What I find really funny is that parts of this album feels the best it's been since Load, and parts of it sounds like a convoluted mess. On some of the tracks it's like they have forgotten how to properly write a song, the transitions are not good at all, and others, luckily most of them, are very good structurally. Lastly, I get that "on the floor"/jam shit they got going on, but please for the love of God: End the songs properly on a high and not 20-30 seconds too late.
A rollercoaster ride. Looking forward to listen to this so much more in the coming months. Good night!

How on earth can they have a listening party at the cinema WITH SO GODDAMN HORRIBLE VIDEOS ??? It’s straight up embarrassing!!!
I’m so happy with the fact that I had heard the songs before, so many details got lost in the very bassy audio environment. Was still a cool experience though and it certainly shifted my opinion on certain songs.

If I look and think back to my posts of what I hoped from this album, it's delivered and exceeded my expectations.
Variety - check Slow and heavy groovers ala Sad, Harvester - check Outlaw/Bleeding-esq epic - check Straight forward old school rockers - check
So much better than the last album, probably better than DM but let's wait and see. This one really has vibes from Kill, Black, Load, Garage all through it. Not in a re-using the same riffs/licks/structure sort of way DM and Hardwired had, but more so in tone and atmosphere.
Loving it.

Just listened to the album in a theater. These are my first impressions of the album. I won’t review title by title but in a general way.
This will be the first time I will comment harshly on a Metallica album. I like every kind of music and every Metallica album. I don’t care if it’s thrash metal or pop as long as it is good.
It’s a 7/10 album for me and I will give it because singles were good. If it was not for the singles, I would give it 4/10.
Overally, songs start with a solid 9/10 intro and ends with 9/10 outro but other than that it sounds very generic. Riffs that goes nowhere, very basic drumming, weak vocal melodies and so on…
Maybe all the reviews by magazines and other people got me hyped too much and I set myself for a disappointment.
All the people were saying it sounds like Justice, Black type of songs, I don’t know what they are smoking. It sounds like Kill Em All low tier songs produced like Hardwired at best.
All I can say, they can still do it. I mean HW was a step in the right direction, then S&M2 and AWMH shows. It shows that this band is capable of much more and they can’t limit themselves to punk-thrash anymore. It was seen very back in the day in 90s and early 2000s.
Inamorata is a step in the right direction but it still suffers like the rest. It sounds like Halo On Fire’s second part more than Outlaw or Fixxxer.

So I listened to inamorata for the first time since the cinema. The slow breakdown with clean guitars is fucking ruined by lars and his stupid fucking high hat. In the cinema I didn't even notice the hi hat because it was so low in the mix. Now in the proper version it's just lars shitting all over the moment with unnecessary noise which in no way fits the moment.
I have come to this conclusion. I love lars don't get me wrong bt I think he is the reason metallicas songs have sounded so shit for the last 4 albums. He is rudimentary at best and doesn't know when to sit still. I am of the belief that the poor transitions are most likely his fault for not being able to come up with creative fills to connect the songs. All he can come up with is snare rolls and flams. Seeing this in the cinema with the sound being overwhelming guitars was a massive eye opener to me. It was so much better.
Moderus needs to do a mix that reduce the treble of the awful high hat and that would improve the album massively.
Another thing which I think makes a difference is the stupid composite drum sticks lars uses. I had some of them and they made the cymbals sound shit and the ride was basically unusable because those sticks make it clang like a fucking church bell. I chucked those sticks on the shelf for display and went back to wooden sticks. Way better.
