To give Kirk some credit, I think If Darkness Had a Son has the best riffs we've heard so far. Makes you wonder which ones came from him. I'm guessing the riff before the solo. I feel Kirk handed them a demo of the whole intro with the 2 riffs the marching beat, the one he starts with, and then that main greasy lick James comes in with. The intro builds and feels like something from off the Portal songs, the last one where it goes into a march and then breaks out into that awesome stuff with all the strings in unison etc I can see Kirk handing them a demo with the intro completes or close to, and then James and Lars pulling the song out of that and adding the other stuff, like a Sandman sort of deal. I thought similar. Sounds like a kirk thing.

Funny reading all the comments about the solo. I like it. No its not Ride the Lightning type of amazing but lots of interesting bits in there. Also like the Psycho shower scene jabs of guitar he adds near the end around 5m40 mark

If the intro is Kirk’s then Kirk should start doing more riffs and James should do the solos. What a cool mix up that would be.

I'm digging this song overall. I can already imagine the crowd chanting "temptation" during their live shows. And "if darkness had a son, here I am" is a good hook I think. The solo is a tad too long but it is what it is.

I still have faith in Kirk despite his solos being subpar for the most part as of late. For starters, his solo project and the solo to Blackened 2020 were interesting. Evere since 2004, he has crafted some really melodic and tasty licks or solos for his live solo spot; case in point the Melbourne solo. Or the one on Francais Pour Une Nuit. Perhaps he or the producer should speak up and tell Lars to let him do his thing. Or have James as a coach. I love Lars but his solos coaching has been pretty much sucking since DM. His solo for the re-plugged AWMH was also really good.

I love that riff under the solo and I love even more that they reintroduce it for the outro. Even though it’s kinda a Savage rip off.
And I gotta say, everything that Kirk’s does in this song, beside the solo is sick. He’s really good at harmonising and accents

Anyone going to the 72 seasons film premiere? It's in alot of theatres in the UK, tempted. I got tickets cuz why not. It’s close to me and was fifteen bucks. I’m going mostly to see what the commentary between songs is all about, but hearing the album in high def like that is going to be cool too.

Bought a couple of seats. Was initially thinking i just wanna hear the album in full in my lounge with a few beers like every other release..... but this is an event I would rather be part of than not. Reminds me a bit of MSG listen for Black Album.

So if its being shown everywhere on the same date, us Aussies gonna get the full album nearly a day earlier than others. Still doesnt make up for no touring.

Under 40 days til the album! Even though some of the singles haven't blown my mind, I'm getting myself extremely hyped for this release. I remembered recently how none of us knew Dream, Halo, and Spit until the album came out. There's a very good chance some of these singles will go down as the worst ones on the album.
Out of the 6 singles between HTSD and 72, Moth has to take the cake as the best. But I think I'd put Lux, SS, and IDHAS all above Hardwired and Atlas.

I'm most curious about the title track. I like the concept of "72 seasons" so lyrically I think it should be interesting. And the first track on an album is often one of the most memorable (Hardwired aside...)

I find it interesting that they've shifted away from the title track always being the second song on the album. Not a bad thing either, Metallica just spent so many years (probably up until the Hardwired era) keeping stuff consistent in their universe and referencing old choices in new ones. I wonder what track number a supposed ballad will be.

Haven't been too impressed with the singles we've heard, but HTSD was the same way and all their better songs we're hidden away until the album release.

We have to take age into consideration and see things in context. At 60 years of age, they've become predictable, especially Lars and Kirk, and will probably disappoint if we keep comparing their work to previous albums. I think they still have at least one more album in their creative tank lest something bad happens to a member. I'm just grateful they're still around and popular, not buzzed for the new album as much as I was for previous ones, but I'm happy to get any new material.
At their age, is it that they do not know that their material is bland compared to their high standard they set decades a go, or that they're aware but feel they can't do nothing about it?

Agree 100%. Bar, I honestly don’t think age has much to do with the quality of material they’re releasing. Maiden have released some of their best albums in the last decade, so I think the material metallica are releasing is probably a mixture of them just not having the same mindset, less pressure and perhaps just having fun and not caring too much about what people think, as opposed to a age thing. I remember seeing an interview with Bob Dylan when he was asked why he didn’t release songs like his classic 60s material anymore, and he simply said he is so far removed from that person and artist that he just can’t write like that anymore. I figure it’s the same with the boys, and I think instead of trying to do that they’re just having a bit of fun and not creating any massive high barriers for themselves. Their tour will sell out, they’ll make a shit Tonne of cash and 70% of the fan base will love whatever they do. Just my thoughts!
