Kanaan will drive for Ganassi in the oval races...but why isn't Jimmie Johnson doing it? He knows ovals as well as anybody :| because jimmie's wife will divorce him if he does :p
i think he'll have interest in running the 500 but doesn't have any interest in the other ovals, citing the danger and speed but that makes no sense because no track is faster or more dangerous than indy! there's only three ovals next year (and i think at best there'll be 4 in 2022) and the track at st louis is fairly tame, texas has the potential to be crazy but nascar have found a way to ruin it with their traction compound meaning races the past few years haven't been (plus, it's only really up front where it is wild).
if i were to speculate, i think he is afraid of being shown up on the ovals. it's one thing being kurt busch in 2014 and rocking up to the 500 with 6-7 days of practice as well as fairly extensive private testing and racing in the best car (6th place on debut was great...he was still only the 4th best andretti car and never looked like leading). it's quite another racing at texas and st louis with maybe 90 minutes of practice in a team built around one driver. johnson being off the pace on the road and street courses i don't think will harm him a great deal because isn't a renowned road racer and driving an indycar at speed round st pete is much tougher than guiding a stock car - maybe being slower on the ovals, whether because of a lack of confidence and experience, poor set up or anything else is going to reflect badly on him. i don't think he should care because he's won the cup series like a million times but then it isn't my legacy

watched some touring cars this evening, lads
this is, perhaps fairly, considered a low point in the history of the BTCC but it was the season that got me hooked. vauxhall totally dominated the championship in the touring class (peugeot and lexus were miles off) and the production class was huge, wide open and crazy exciting. the knockhill round featured another classic yvan muller vs jason plato battle, steve soper and phil bennett continued their war (which eventually ended soper's career, sadly), gordon sheddon burst onto the scene spectacularly in the production class. happy days.
during this period, because the production category was so huge (up to 30 cars i believe at some races) and the touring class so limited with 4 dominant cars, the series was almost like a modern day sports car series. the touring car class would start the race at the front of the field but have to complete one more lap than the production class (eg production class race is 20 laps, touring class would have to complete 21), in the sprint race there would be a 10 second gap between both classes from a standing start and in the "feature" race it would be a joint rolling start. in the latter also, touring cars would have a mandatory pitstop requiring a two tyre change. it made for some really interesting and compelling races.
knockhill is an absolute car breaker and even more so in these days. only a few cars made the end of the feature race due to mechanical issues, that it even more resembled a sports car race! you forget how far safety has moved since the early 2000s as broken cars are just dotted about all over the place. i can't think of a series like this today outside of japan -super gt is a DTM race with a BTCC race at the back and super taikyu is everything from GT3 and equivalent through to production cars (despite what the FIA wants and what, i think, JAF want sometimes) in multi-class crazy endurance races. it is a really fun style of racing, today and back then.
charile cox and john watson on commentary was also something else alright.

I googled and JJ is indeed pretty vocal against IndyCar doing ovals altogether, this after Wheldon's crash. Though he seemed at one point to soften his stance regarding the Indy 500. they all say until they actually race an indycar on an oval :p
if safety really was their biggest concern, the 500 is the race that they'd be most against competing in. driving at 235mph towards a wall before turning at the last second, on a shallow banked oval, is way more dangerous than the other steeper but shorter ovals or flatter but slower ovals like in st louis. even pocono, which a lot of the drivers disliked, is safer because it's wider - the problems created there were because of a lack of practice sessions and a lack of respect from the drivers (like trying to go 6 wide on the first lap), most of the races since they went back there were actually quite dull and lacking incident.
las vegas was a series of disasters that began with trying to run *34* cars on a 1.5 mile track that last hosted open wheel cars in 2005 (i think), which was in champcar lolas so the cars were less bulky/less draggy/didn't encourage pack racing like the dallara IR-05, before the track had been steeper to accomodate nascar (and worse racing, apparently?). then the drivers, a lot of whom were part timers and/or trying to save their ride or prove themselves, started doing crazy shit that the experience drivers like franchitti and castroneves had no interest in. oval racing is dangerous, of course, but it can be done safely and intelligently. the las vegas race was never any of those things.

also i amn't sure where else to post this but as the board lusophone, what do you make of ryan gauld's accent here forgotten in space? i've seen loads of journalists credit him for having a very "authentic" voice when speaking portuguese, picking up the farense accent a little bit: it is impressive to me mostly because the northern angus/mearns accent does not sound like that! whenever i have spoken (my low quality) spanish around spanish friends, they would say "we know the sounds you are making but that is not spanish", so i am doubly proud of the lad.

his "r" is unsurprisingly not hard, but other than that it is a remarkably natural Portuguese accent, I would definitely not think him a foreigner :o
you can post at random thoughts, isn't that what it's for? :P

aye but i was already in this thread when i remembered so i posted it here instead :lazy:

I sucked at Linguistics, I can't recall why native English speakers are incapable of pronouncing an hard "r". Maybe we should ask someone clever like Soulshine :P all you have to do is bring something from your throat, like if you wanted to get rid of phlegm or something :P

any idea why the abu dhabi formula 2 round was cancelled? i was sure that there were still two rounds to go but apparently this weekend is the last weekend of the year.
so mick almost certainly winning and almost certainly racing at haas next year?
I sucked at Linguistics, I can't recall why native English speakers are incapable of pronouncing an hard "r". Maybe we should ask someone clever like Soulshine :P all you have to do is bring something from your throat, like if you wanted to get rid of phlegm or something :P is the hard "r" sound you mean the rolling "rrrrrrrr" sounds. as in the spanish "perro" vs "pero"? it's certainly much easier for scots to do that but it's never really called for *in* english or, i suppose, other germanic languages. or is the hard "r" the sound at the start of "right" which english people often pronounce the same as "white"? again, that's something that scots do much more than the english but given that most of the television we watch and the educational tapes we are played in school to teach us how to talk/how things are sounds are made in england, by english people and for a (mostly) english audience, it could be something that is learnt (for us) by exposure rather than "native", if that makes sense.
i'm also not very good at linguistics as you can see and maybe Soulshine is a better person to ask indeed!

Yeah, I mean the rolling "r". (I hope I haven't misremembered anything thus risking incurring wrath of doG for tagging her in a sports thread ) ah! yeah, scots *can* do it but like i say, i don't think it really comes up in english, scots (+ norn and doric) or any other germanic language really. but we can do it and it comes fairly naturally! but you would have to consciously do so, if that makes sense? gauld is also very softly spoken - the accent in the region we're from is either quite soft and lilting or it is quite harsh (or it's a dundonian accent), there's no real in between - which causes the articulations of some sounds to be softened or missed entirely.
i've heard that scots make good russian speakers so with the meme that portuguese and russian are said to sound similar, maybe we're able to pass easier :p
(i have probably havered pish so if you've misremembered something, you can rest easy that you won't be the only one in trouble )

no hot takes just reassertions:
there's a reason why barriers that stick out towards the track have been banned/removed in oval racing since the early 2000s - the greg moore tragedy being a huge part of this.
obviously it was an accident and an odd result but i sincerely believe, as i suggested earlier in this thread, that the cars are too fast for the circuits they are on atm. LMP1 in 2015 had this, if the cars weren't slowed down there was no chance they could race at silverstone, nurburgring, mexico, le mans and, approriately, bahrain going forth. obviously the 2022 regs sort this out but 2022 is not 2021 or the next fortnight.
it might also have been a total fluke like with kimi's crash at silverstone in 2014 so it's probably too early to criticise too much or lay blame at anyone's feet.
big love for my guy rogro. hopefully his recovery is smooth and we see him on trackside, probably stateside, soon enough.

grosjean winning driver of the day after crashing out on turn 2 of lap 1 partly through his own error is peak social media Mate I'm so glad he's ok, but that move was a bit crass. Kvyat got 10 seconds for causing a collision, and sure he's behind he should take more care. But Lance godamnit, it's a start, there's more people around, don't turn in like normal (see Seb v Sharl). I definitely would have given a less harsh penalty or class it race incident.

hulk... :p
pietro fiitipaldi and the boy delatraz are the test drivers, i think, but i don't think that they have super licences. presumably none of the GP2 lads associated with ferrari or haas will be available - at the very least they won't be available next weekend. nikita mazepin i think still needs to finish 5th in the championship to get his super licence (he might get away with 6th with the 75% rule brought in for this year - the 18th place finish last year really screwed him), even if his dad is rumoured to be buying the team. tsunoda, shwartzman and lundgaard are not far off him in the standings and delatraz and zhou could still usurp him so it might be a risk to miss the second bahrain round.
i doubt they'll get dispensation to run only one car so obviously they'll need to field someone. hulk might be the guy, someone left field would be really cool like wehrlein, button, kobayashi, yamamoto, palmer, di resta (who is in bahrain atm), martin truex jr... we'll surely find out in the coming days.

But Lance godamnit, it's a start, there's more people around, don't turn in like normal (see Seb v Sharl). I definitely would have given a less harsh penalty or class it race incident. same, man. i had it on the radio as i had a few chores to do and, to their credit, jolyon palmer and jack nicholls stayed very calm and in control - only once it was clear that he was "okay" did they elaborate on the enormity of the incident. i was glad that they did because i almost dropped my phone when i opened up twitter and saw the videos (that F1 themselves posted...). i definitely do not regret my poor time management today meaning i missed the start on television!
it was a typical grosjean first lap move and it just happened to have a terrifying outcome. if he's racing in the USA next year, he had better not do that at indy.
terrible penalty for kvyat i think. he's getting that penalty purely because of the result rather than the act. that was poor by lance there. like you said, it's the first lap and he didn't seem to take that into account. kvyat can't just disappear! very silly.
feel bad for perez, that was one of his finer races i thought. deserved that podium - ironically it might help save albon's seat!

some rumours going about, though it seems all but official, that pietro fittipaldi will be in place for grosjean for at least once grand prix.
that's interesting because i didn't think that he had 30 super licence points or that he currently had one. unless they were able to acquire him one under special circumstances.
i would not be upset by this though as the boy has serious speed which he showed in indycar and in prototype racing. he'd have had quite a year in 2018 were it not for his accident - but he came back within a few months and was on the pace in indycar immediately so he has something to him. wasn't spectacular in DTM last year but with who is left nowadays, if that was the F1 grid you wouldn't complain. all he's done this year is asian f3 and i think some mexican nascar(?) so hopefully he's up to race fitness.
the race on sunday might be a slaughter for the ferrari cars but it might also be a weird and wild one so having someone that can keep up, stay smart and in the hunt for points is crucial for haas. it might also be his audition tape for next year...

that nascar mexico thing might be an iracing thing, right enough. if it wasn't though, i wonder if there's ever been someone race in nascar mexico *and* formula one in the same season?
montoya would be the best shout i think though i could've seen villeneuve doing that too. depending on when the series actually came to be, pietro's cousin christian may have done both during the same season :pp

i missed this! i had washing machine related mishaps to deal with this afternoon/evening, did he say much? No, not really. It was in Spanish, with SA media I think. Basically Red Bull or bust; He said he could take a reserve role with a big team but wouldn't want to travel around and be away from his family for 23 races if it's not to drive. So if he gets a reserve offer it has to be somewhat reduced.; Says he has options already to return to the grid in 2022 (dunno to what degree this is posturing); Other categories don't interest him. He seems perfectly at peace with taking a sabbatical, spending time with his family and evaluate his life, what he wants to do in the future, if he even would want to keep racing altogether. He had a mighty fine barb about a lot of drivers not deserving their seats, and that F1 would find itself with 10 worthy drivers and 10 just making the numbers (he said 'relleno', so filler), but I doubt most media would bother picking that up.

i'm noticing that he's really doubling down on getting this red bull seat. and though he's putting in career best drives this season (perez might be the 2nd or 3rd best driver this season), i'm feeling more and more like albon has the seat. especially if tsunoda is said to be all but confirmed in the minardi. 2021 is going to be a lame duck year, the cars are more or less frozen so no matter who is in that red bull they won't be challenging for either title, albon might get better with an extra year in the car and he already shows that he won't get in verstappen's way on or off track, it's probably good for red bull to have a thai driver... idk, fair play to perez though for really gunning for the seat and staying in F1. if he's found the peace too to only want to prioritise F1, i respect that. like you've said, he's got the family now and he's been a full time driver since he was *16* years old so he definitely deserves to live his life. bless that series because i love it but he doesn't have to prove anything racing in nascar mexico or anything!
guessing one of the "reserve"/tester roles he's been offered is with l'scuderia? seeing as they'll take anybody that gets fired/falls off the grid - they've had kobayashi, vergne, hartley, wehrlein and kvyat (and probs will again ) in that role in recent years, it only follows they'd want him now too.
he's 100% right though with his quote. no disrespect to half of the grid atm (of whom a couple are race winners...) but when i say that the DTM grid would be a good F1 grid, i reallu don't think that the overall quality is far off (even accounting for hamilton, perez, leclerc, ricciardo). like with indycar, there is a clear divide between the top tier talent and the payers/lads that have enough funding to keep them around and perez isn't wrong to allude to that, or a lack of talent for the level of racing.
