my hail mary opinion for this weekend is that if they get a good enough start, i quite fancy either gasly or kvyat being able to fight for a podium. true there was only one practice session but verstappen's long run pace doesn't seem to be far ahead of the rest of the midfield and the minardi looked strong all day. consider that the mclarens and the panthers are further back this weekend and ferrari are...ferrari...i think the battle for 3rd could be pretty exciting.
george russell with one of the laps of the season there. i don't know if it stuck but that he was the fastest in the first sector towards the end of Q2 is mega.
special k should've been in Q2 but lost it at.
i wonder how bottas would be ranked if he was paired with literally any other driver. he's so insanely quick and he did show when at williams that he has really good race pace but hamilton just takes the piss out of him because lewis hamilton is one of the best ever (even if i am not a huge fan).
sharl was there and did good. so did ricciardo.
giovinazzi 4ever.

hahaha, aye, there's a little less engagement with the sport when you're at the track vs at the football pitch or hockey rink. you forget sometimes that the crowd won't be as partisan and won't necessarily share your favourite driver/hated driver :p although ford71V8 might be able to shed light, with the ford vs GM rivalry being so ingrained within the australian motor culture, is there a partisan feeling at the track? like, ford fans will vocally cheer ford cars when they pass regardless if they are doing anything spectacular and boo/jeer GM cars for the same?
i'm glad that you enjoyed the race though. like i said, hopefully there's another one in the not distant future!
Absolutely it is like that....over the top red vs blue.... friendly(-ish) banter in the grandstands and when leaving the track. I can see it has mellowed a bit over the years. I feel people tend to choose and follow a favourite driver or team over manufacturer more these days, this is probably partly due to how often you see drivers swapping camps and less loyalty to a team. However I am devastated by the news that Adelaide has lost its 500, and currently sulking that my sport is dying before my eyes, so it means squat to me right now

red bull playing their usual gambit of blaming the engine supplier when they can't win is it.
let them develop their own engine from 2022 imo, let's test their expertise. it couldn't possibly be the aero or anything holding them back.

what a fucking joke of a VSC there. 30 seconds?
ruined what was quite a compelling sequence of the race there. FIA taking the piss.

BIG SERGIO ON SOFTS. GET IT, SON. Should they really have stopped? well i was assuming that ric, sharl and albon were going to also... it's a tough one in retrospect. the panther is a good race car and i think that he may still end up in 3rd - perhaps they were covering off the group behind from stopping rather than trying to win the race?

Franz likes Daniil, he'll be fighting his corner even more after today.
So, I bet only Haas and RB have seats.

So, I bet only Haas and RB have seats. marko before the race seemed to be heavily suggesting that tsunoda would in fact be in the toro rosso next year, which would imply that albon is either staying at the main team or is out altogether. i amn't convinced.
i've never seen in formula one a level of love a team principle has a for driver like tost does for kvyat. only peter sauber and nick heidfeld and ron dennis with mika seems to come close. tost will do everything to keep kvyat in that team for sure. the story i heard was that tost likes to put the new recruits through lots of punishing physical training over winter, including mountain hikes and skiing, and that no driver has been able to withstand punishment quite like kvyat does. similarly, as fragile as he appears to be when he has a setback (see his performances after he got dropped by red bull and through 2017), tost likes and values kvyat's approach to racing, development, everything. he clearly brings something to the team even if his results don't show it. ferrari did sign him as a third driver in his year away from red bull too.

is it a situation like when the greens got the canberra street race blocked or is there something more going on? real shame either way.

Where to start......?
Adelaide was home to Holden manufacturing - gone. Ford Australia shut up shop before them. V8SC's reluctance to remove aero, creating processional racing. Crowds at the 500 down on previous years (lots of possible reasons, but clearly there has been a drop in people, activity and the important support categories, while ticket prices remained high) The date often smack bang in the middle of what we call Mad March, with so many other things happening in the city to take your money.
And the main reason why initially the 500 was to be moved from its normally season opening slot - COVID. Or moreso the crowd and social distancing problems with such an event. It looked like Adelaide was going to delay the 500 to later in the year, cross their fingers that Covid crap stays in the past, and maybe having it as the season finale. Somehow that quickly turned into the event ending full-stop. I could live with no race for 2021, but to take it out back and shoot it seems over the top.
OK, the crowds were smaller but its still a big number and the money generated by the local businesses is huge.... those local businesses that have had a terrible year and desperately need an injection that can only come from something like this taking place. Seems crazy.
So, no its not the greenies (though there will be some happy people, like those Eastenders that have their work travel interrupted for a few days a year) and while everything right now seems to have political motivation, I think its more to do with being careful where to put Gov $$'s and the concern of hosting events that could see us go backwards in the Covid fight.
Its probably a rough summary but right now in 2020 things aren't great for the series. You would have seen Bathurst held with minimal crowd (4k max each day). Great the race went on but the atmosphere was absolutely zero. You just couldnt do that for the 500. The costs involved make it totally impractical.
No more watching cars fire into Turn 8

ah. of course, i forgot that that was where holden's manufacturing base was. shit.
combined with like you say the other attractions, the formula of the series not allowing for super close racing, lack of support from government.
and aye, the rona.
it's so sad mate. you're right, the 1000 this year wasn't the same (i meant to message you about it, i'm sorry! the past few weeks have been shaky). i can see how it'd be unfeasible to host a street event in this era.
i saw some report saying that formula e would consider it but, like, how? i know they themselves often cover sanctioning fees and whatnot but i think i mind sic_jes saying that when the race was held in montreal, it caused a local political row - that being with fans and without covid.
hoping for the best for the seriesm the race and yourself

It would have been great to see Scotty take a final win for 2020 before heading to the US. But the car never seemed to be dialed in to the track all thru the lead up sessions. And each year I quietly hope for a winner from a smaller, less-funded team. Previous years I have had my money on Scott Pye for top spot (and he came 2nd each time ) For 2020 I was just happy for anyone to win other than 2 cars. The first 888 car crashed out early (lap 33, what was Whincup thinking? totally impatient with a whole day of racing to go) and the other one dominated through the 7 minutes of rain there was and held position from that point on to take the win. Bah!
