They should let him write the whole next album. He has brought some of the most memorable Metallica riffs to the table, and his lyrics are decent. "My lifestyle determines my deathstyle."

I was half joking with my post, you guys take everything too seriously.
An album full if Satan's and Frantics... You never know.

I always liked the "My lifestyle determines my death style" line. Don't see why it gets so much hate.

I always liked the "My lifestyle determines my death style" line. Don't see why it gets so much hate. There's actually quite a few good songs on SA (Frantic, SKOM, My World, Unnamed), Lars's drumming completely fucks it though.

I don't think there are any issues with Lars' drumming on St. Anger. It's just the sound of the drums that's questionable.

Lars's drumming on St. Anger is the clear proof that any sort of degradation happened in 2004. Also hot take: My World is in the top 25 best Tallica songs. St. Anger as a whole is very hit or miss with me, but My World is consistently a highlight not only of the album, but of 21st century Metallica.
Also, another hot take: A bigger issue with the drums on St. Anger than the tone is the consistency. Some songs sound pretty good (Frantic's drums are almost identical to I Disappear, just a bit more pingy) but some actually sound like trash cans. If you go to 6:08 in The Unnamed Feeling, you can hear the drum sound transform from dull trash cans to brighter, better sounding drums when the chorus hits. It's because the songs were recorded over the course of 2 years in a variety of set ups. It's not like Hardwired where even though they were recording for awhile, the set up at HQ never changed.
If the drums on that album all sounded like Frantic, and also the snare was EQed to get some of that horrid ping out of it, I don't think anyone would be complaining about the sound of it. I've never seen anyone complain about the drums on I Disappear.

Some songs it's worse, some songs it's not so bad. Also, Dirty Window is a fucking awesome song. I'd love to hear that one live.

My World is cool, and was great on that rehearsals DVD. Unarmed Feeling and My World are easily my favourites from that album and the only two I ever go back and listen to.
Dirty Window is a bottom 5 Metallica song for me. It's down there with Poor Twisted Me as a real piece of shit.

If I had to choose between Poor Twisted Me vs. the entirety of St. Anger, I'd gladly choose PTM. All SA songs are at the bottom of the Metallica totem pole for me. I'd like to think they aren't on the pole altogether.

I like Dirty Window too. Great fun to jam on.
I put the Rehearsals DVD onto CD, probably have listened to that version more than the proper disc. I watched that DVD a lot of times when it first came out, its pretty much how I got familiar with the album if ya know what I mean

Shoot Me Again is awesome. SKOM, Invisible Kid, Unnamed Feeling, I Love those songs. The DVD helps.
If Metallica rerecorded any of these songs with their 2016 standards they'd rock even harder.

The song as a whole just sounds sort of like a demo. The mixing isn't coherent nor is the songwriting. Which is one of the problems with a lot of St. Anger songs (but not with My World, hence my preference). Also agree about Unnamed Feeling! Very well put together song, though the production on that one is some of the worst on the album :-(

Yeah I do agree with that. Almost every St. Anger song has that one section shoehorned into the song for no reason.

Do you guys think HWTSD is better than Load?
They feel like quite similar albums in terms of quality/style.

When they released Moth for Flame, I was very luke warm on it, but listening to it lately, not hearing, listening, there is some amazing riffage going on there.
