I am extremely satisfied with the pick, because while incredibly out of left field, it is absolutely in line with my wildest dreams on what they would play. I personally happen to really like the original band (Hassisen kone) by simple virtue of cultural osmosis and personal curiosity - I'd heard their tunes a million times over growing up but totally fell in love with the attitude on display and the cleverness of their lyrics once I started listening to their tunes on my own less than a year ago.
Seeing the band (or, well, at least half of it) that originally made me interested in music do one of Hassisen kone's most famous tunes from way back in the 80s just absolutely made my day. It oddly feels like validation, like that tiny, short-lived Finnish band has now been immortalized in rock music history in however slight form.
Metallica also apparently donated 25 thousand euros to a charity helping the homeless, which has earned the band a lot of praise and visibility on the tabloid websites which also makes me very happy. Metallica is genuinely helping people around the world, which is something I can't say for many other bands.
e: Also, for someone who doesn't speak the language, Rob manages surprisingly well on singing it. Obviously the ä's and ö's are a particular spot of difficulty, but fuck man, I doubt many natural English speakers could do better with barely any rehearsal or training.

Cool. I'm glad it gave you a boner.
And yes, Metallica are really giving back these days. I was going to volunteer for that Metallica All within my hands day, but it was only American cities.

Good goddamn. I would have never, never EVER in a million years guessed that they would pick THAT song! But it was really fucking awesome. And as Ruflux said, Rob's pronounciation was pretty much flawless, especially considering he probably hasn't trained the song that much. One of the most surreal moments I've ever experienced in my life. Hassisen Kone was one of the earliest rock bands I ever remember listening to, and this song in particular, so it was extra special. Other than that, I had a good time. The sound was somewhat muddy, especially for the first few songs. It got a bit better towards the end, though. No major fuckups - Kirk played pretty darn well, Lars was his usual self, Rob was good, James was good. One slight timing error during Moth Into Flame, but nothing major. The songs we got in the "changing slots" were The Four Horsemen, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Dream No More, Last Caress, Creeping Death and Fight Fire With Fire. I especially liked Dream, it was the high point of the show for me. Too bad we didn't get Spit Out the Bone, but they played it on Wednesday, so it was to be expected. And you can never go wrong with FFWF. All in all, it was a good show. It was fun hearing the new songs live. Fun fact: other than HWTSD songs, they played 0 songs from post-Black albums. Definitely had an old school vibe. The visuals were great - I loved the video cubes that were hanging from the rafters, they were very clever. Also, the mini drones with LED lights during Moth were super cool, and I'd love to know how they were controlled! Oh yeah. The drum shtick during Now That We're Dead is so cheesy and dumb, and I wish to never see it again. The setlist:

I don't know how many of you care about this, but hey, I cared enough to make the list. So now I've seen Metallica seven times between 1999-2018, and here's a breakdown of the songs I've seen them play. Seven times:Enter Sandman Master of Puppets Nothing Else Matters One Sad But True Seek & Destroy Six times:For Whom The Bell Tolls Four times:Creeping Death Fight Fire With Fire Three times:Battery The Unforgiven Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Wherever I May Roam Twice:...And Justice For All Blackened Fade to Black Fuel Orion Ride the Lightning The Four Horsemen The Memory Remains Whiskey In The Jar Once:All Nightmare Long Am I Evil? Atlas, Rise! Bleeding Me Breadfan Broken, Beat & Scarred Cyanide Die, Die My Darling Disposable Heroes Don't Tread On Me Dream No More Frantic Halo on Fire Hardwired Harvester Of Sorrow Hell and Back Helpless Hit The Lights Holier Than Thou I Disappear Jump In The Fire King Nothing Last Caress Lords of Summer Moth Into Flame My Friend of Misery No Leaf Clover No Remorse Now That We're Dead Of Wolf and Man St. Anger That Was Just Your Life The Day That Never Comes The End of the Line The Frayed Ends of Sanity The God That Failed The Shortest Straw The Struggle Within The Thing That Should Not Be Through the Never Trapped Under Ice Turn the Page Whiplash

They're still doing the oversized drum crap in the middle of Dead?
We should set up a GoFundMe page to pay someone to steal those drums from HQ and have them burned

Cool so are the band just going to constantly rotate between America and Europe on this album tour?
And why would anyone go to a stadium show after just seeing them indoors?! The only reason people go to stadium shows is because they think the band won’t be back for years and won’t do an arena tour right?

Being in the snakepit at the stadium show > indoor show. But you have to be extremely lucky. Even more now when metclub became a free fifth member thing.
Haven't they been doing 2x runs of Europe and NA for decades now? After HTSD release I just assumed that this is going to be the case again. They're probably are going to be done with Americas and Europe by the end of 2019 and then I'd guess they will throw 10-20 gigs in Australia/Oceania and call the Worldwired tour done.

I hope not.

8 years and no riffs from Kirk. This time around he backed up all his stuff and stored it safely at his house in Hawaii...

I don’t remember them doing stadiums in Europe or the US for Death Magnetic or St. Anger. Festivals yes, but not their own long outdoor stadium tours... I could be wrong. Crazy to think this album tour potentially still has years to go. Personally from sitting here in Australia and not actually seeing the shows, this has been a fairly underwhelming tour - boring setlists, cheesy gimmicks with the drums and drones. I’ve been saying it all tour - I’m not sure I’ll have much interest in watching the Now That We’re Dead drum dance on a screen at the MCG 900meters from the band with 90,000 other people, especially if it’s not till 2020. I guess they’re touring where they think the money is but it is a bit annoying watching them bounce between Europe and the Americas for two years while ignoring all other regions.

They definitely played stadium gigs in Europe in 2004, after St. Anger was released. I was at the gig in Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Not 100% sure about the Death Magnetic tour though, I saw them indoors during that time.

I didn't mean that there were indoors/outdoor specifically. What I meant was that during DM tour before they went to Australia they did NA and Europe twice. Fall 08 - Beginning 09 - NA Spring and summer 09 - Europe Fall 09 - NA again Spring and summer 10 - Europe again And after those 2 runs there was Australia at the end of the tour. This time they seem to be doing the same. Only this time its Stadiums NA, Arenas Europe, Arenas NA, Stadiums Europe. And most likely they will end the tour again in Australia in 2020 (Maybe second half of 2019).

They played here on the St. Anger tour before the US indoor run, but I forgot that they did do Stadiums over there first in 2003 with the Summer Sanitarium thing. I guess it’s just more frustrating this time because it’s spread over 3-4 years instead of 2. And it’s not just Australia missing out, it’s New Zealand, Japan, etc...I know they did China and Singapore a couple of years back but I would have thought it’d be better to hit as many markets as possible early on while interest is high, then do a second/third pass through regions in high demand rather than wait 3-4 years to get to places for the first time. It’s 2018 where new music is literally pushed to us every single day, and Metallica want to turn up in 2020 and say “here’s our latest single Moth Into Flame from 2016, let’s hope the microphone works this time! Haha” and the crowd are going to have no idea. But hey what do I know, I’m sure they have a solid plan in place.
