Is it too much to ask to just have the band come out and play a bunch of cool, varied songs? Personally I don't want some big production that's choreographed. I don't need fancy lights or screens or lasers or giant toilets that push the boundaries of what can be done on a tour. I just want them to play songs like Disposable Heroes, Bleeding Me, ...and Justice For All and a few of the new ones. Don't worry , it's over

Holograms, and robots for Spit out the Bone. They can have a big robot fight just like the Beastie Boys Intergalactic video during that song...with lasers and shit. That'll be actually pretty cool.

Were they not tired of all that after the Black Album years and right up to the St. Anger period?

Were they not tired of all that after the Black Album years and right up to the St. Anger period? I'd venture a guess that they're so well known by the general public for their massive concert productions that they don't want to risk people being underwhelmed.

The really annoying part about these big fancy productions is how much it limits the setlist. You can't exactly swap out half the songs every other night if all the lights, screens, lasers and pyro have been set up for a specific setlist and stage choreography. Trying to make major changes mid-tour and have everyone on-board rehearse and learn a whole bunch of different songs every few days would probably just end in disaster.

I wouldn't mind bigger production for the arena shows. I've been to two of the Copenhagen shows and to three NA shows and I prefer the stadium shows because of that big-ass production. The setlists although were boring. They already hinted that they'll have a bigger stage production and more diverse setlists. If they do that and use a bigger stage (that won't happen) and I'd be more than happy because I usually like arena shows more than stadium shows.

Spot on, I've said this for years. I miss the spontane element of their shows, it's all so mapped out and predictable

And this is coming from (if I recall correctly) two people who got pretty annoyed when people complained about the band not playing the deepest of cuts at ___ show on the old board. I was never expecting the band to be both THIS uninspired AND predictable in terms of show production, set list, and overall demeanor on stage. Especially after playing a set containing Frayed Ends, UN II, Militia, Dispy, and Damage, and that kind of variety being more in the norm. I get the band was less tight for WM because of the constant set changes, but they were having so much more fun, and there has to be some sort of happy medium in there for everybody.

I have a slightly bad feeling that the reason they did the 2014 By Request shows and the variation of the setlists up until 2015 is because they realize that they might not be able to play some of these songs in the future and they probably knew that when they recorded a new album they would be playing those songs, plus the hits because they have to play those for the festivals they get booked on after a successful album. That's how I feel these 3-4 years have been, they might be winding down the crazy deep cuts because a lot of them are fast thrashy songs. That's my vibe, but maybe they'll play more Load and ReLoad songs because who are we kidding if they make it to 60 or 70, that's basically all they will be able to play. I'm almost certain the next album will not be thrash metal lol.

I still think the By Request tour soured them on having eclectic setlists given what songs the fans voted for on that tour.

But then they toured the following year playing Frayed Ends, Unforgiven 2, King Nothing, etc...

I just arranged meeting up with some Swedish dudes we met last time, nothing better than getting some beers in with fellow Metallica fans from around the world. It's not long before Spit is premiered in Copenhagen :) Are you guys meeting up on Friday?

What do you reckon Metallica does with their massive stages after a tour? Store it in Lars's vault?
