The DM chatter got me spin a few tracks while making dinner. S&R, when those harmonies kick in after the slow clean part still makes the hairs on my arms stand up. Absolutely beautiful.

I'm thinking about the 40th anniversary shows since they were about a year ago now, and besides Bleeding Me and getting to finally see Fixxxer played, this might've been the highlight of the show. TWJYL, TEOTL, and BB&S all deserve to at least be in rotation as much as Cyanide and TDTNC. Why is Lars counting the verse in on the hi hat lol. I've noticed Lars's drumming getting better over the last few years has been at the expense of him LOUDLY keeping time on the hi-hat every chance he gets. If you compare the 40th anniversary TEOTL to any other version, it gets a little annoying.

Because he has more less stripped every song down to a bare minimum. Except slow songs or ballads where he absolutely overplays like crazy. He has been triggered in recent years and is for sure playing to a click track at times I would say the trigger and better production is what has made a difference.

Last time I saw them, and they played FFWF towards the end of the show, Lars was on fire 🔥 and in the pocket through out the show. I have no complaints when actually being there, in the moment, unless a song goes completely off the rails. Watching at home is a completely different, there's usually a lot less beer involved, and it's easy to pick out every micro note out of place. My clip 👇from that show. Fire 🔥

The production helps a ton, and ballads are still a mess (lol sanitarium verses) but it seems like he's focusing more on just keeping it together for the faster songs than playing stupid fills that derails the speed of the song every time.

It's been kind of fun seeing things like the 2009 Copenhagen show when it was a Metallica Monday feature with the "polished" (sample-replaced) drum sound and realizing that Lars wasn't actually half bad even then. Sure his tempos were all over the place, but his playing had a ton of energy to it, even if the fills extravaganza got a little funny at times. It felt less obnoxious with the Death Magnetic tunes or something rarely played like Trapped Under Ice.
These days I just hear an old man that never learned proper technique and is now dealing with it by playing things slow and excessively simple.

Agreed! The 2006 show was another one because for awhile I assumed that was the worst of the worst for the band's tightness. The original LiveMet mixes were just so horrifically bad at times that I really think it affected how a ton of people thought the band sounded live. Pretty much any drumming you hear is going to be more compressed and polished with EQ than those were.

If I remember correctly, the poor or lack of mixing on the LM bootlegs was a constant complaint on the forums back then. Especially in 2004. YouTube vids captured with cellphones sounded better, fuller and did the live experience justice. Unbelievable!

I'm checking out some 2019 tuning room vids. I've never seen videos of the band more jokey since the 90s I think, this is some good goofy shit

Very much so. Never heard of them before Excel were Suicidal Tendencies friends from the Californian 80's hardcore/crossover scene. Their first album (Split Image) is really cool, if you're into that sound. This song made them kinda famous because of the "Sandman" riff, before Metallica. Theirs was released in 1989. But i don't think they ever asked for royalties or something like that. The person who still talks about this non-stop is Dave Mustaine, of course. Fun fact: Their guitarist and founding member, Adam Siegel, played on Infectious Grooves with Rob. So, yeah... they're friends with Metallica.

Good info. And yes, song was from before Sandman which is why I put it up.. Interesting there is a link to Metallica - not a stretch to think they had heard this song then.
Haha, I haven't caught Dave bringing this up. Not surprised though.

I listened to a bunch of DM and watched some of the Mission Metallica vids this week, I don't think I ever gave enough credit to how "modern" sounding some of those songs were. A lot of those riffs and some of the songs sound more 00s than 80s, they just tried so hard to fit them into that 80s album mold. Rubin does some great work but he didn't do this band a lot of favors.

Have you ever tried, in your head, to listen to Sandman but with the King Nothing lyrics, or vice versa? It's a bit of a mental struggle to get anywhere.

I can understand why, its liking trying to see those illusion spinning images spin both ways.
I woke up with that Chris Cornell cover of U2's "One" with Met "One" lyrics, in my head this morning. That would not come easily, would have taken a few practices to get the original lyrics out your head.

Why the hell is "Minus Human" not appreciated anywhere? I get it No Leaf Clover is fantastic as a Metallica track, straight to the point. However, Minus Human has great rising and falling points. It has a peculiar energy that makes it so unique to listen to. One of my favorite parts in this track is the breakdown where Kirk starts his solo and James goes "eeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyhhhaaaaa-haha"
