Seems like the check off bars for tracking. Full of x's means all tracks are done, album finished.

Yep, these grids are used to tick off whats done, whats left to do. BUT, do the X's in boxes mean Completed, or are we waiting for the triangles of each X to be coloured in!?

The stupidest thing imo about this massive wait is that Metallica were really popular again around Death Magnetic time.
Most people loved the album and the tour was pretty good.
And then they capitalised on it by doing a load of projects nobody wanted.
Imagine if they'd released another album like Death Magnetic in 2012 or so instead of letting all that momentum and goodwill pretty much grind to a halt and completely evaporate.

Yes that was the worst decision ever... I think they had planned out the recordings of a new album soon after DM, but then all these other things started to happen and everything got postponed... By years and years.

I genuinely don't think there will be another studio album after this one UNLESS they recorded enough material for two albums and release them in quick succession.
Another 5 year wait and the guys will all be pushing 60. I think they should retire whilst they can still just about play live and not (completely) turn into a laughing stock.
Either that or they should tour less and less. Lars is playing really well at the moment but if he started to go the way of Kirk...

I don't think they will ever turn into a laughing stork, unless they start to switch members out. They can hold their own pretty well, even when pushing 60. I do think it's their last album and even though it saddens me, I'm kinda okay with it. They have killed off so much of my excitement for the band with their horrible release pattern. They have released 2 original studio albums since I was 15... And I'm 34 now... Fucking TWO !?

Yeah it's mad that not only have they only put out 2 studio albums since Reload back in 1997 - almost 20 years ago ...
But...Rob has been in the band now for 13 years and has put out 1 studio album, not including Lulu ( i'm not getting into whether that's a Metallica album )...

So much potential good music that will never see the light of day because they where busy losing money To be fair, I did enjoy some of their projects, Orion and the 30 years anniversary was beyond awesome, the rest I could do without. And I don't count Lulu as a Metallica album

I think they should retire They should have done that many, many years ago. On some level, they already have.

I even watch bits of TTN here and there and wonder if that was even worth the time and energy compared to them just focusing on NEW material for a change.

Also they didn't even include the toilet scene, what a waste.

If the new album doesn't come out before November 2017 (which it will), that would be 20 years with only 2 original studio albums released. Hell, when the album does get released it'll still only be 3 original studio albums in 19 years. Madness!

U2 are the biggest band on the planet and since 1997 - the same year Metallica released Reload they've released
'97 - Pop '00 - All That You Can't Leave Behind '04 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb '09 - No Line On The Horizon '13 - Songs Of Innocence '16 - Songs Of Experience ( due this year )
SO it's not *all* rich and successful bands that take an average 10 years per album.

Yep. There are numerous big bands who have released multiple albums the past decade. I like all genre's also. Look how many albums Tim McGraw has put out in ten years as well. He loves what he does.....period. linkin park released like three albums in the past ten years...and currently working on another!

Maybe it comes down to that if they really wanted to release a new album, it wouldn't take 8 years... Maybe there's no spark left to take into the studio.

The bottom line is - Metallica haven't put out an album since 2008 because they don't want to.
It's not a top priority anymore.

There's a reason why they're still out there playing huge shows. It's (among many things) because they've written some amazing music and that music can be celebrated and performed whenever. Obviously it will be awesome when they release the new album and start playing new songs as well, but until then I don't see what's so bad about nostalgia as long as it consists of awesome music that has stood the test of time being played live here and now.

What do you want them to do if they write a song/album which takes years and years to finish? Not release/finish it 'cause it takes too long according to the fans?

If the new album is fantastic then the wait till have been worth it.
If it sounds tired and lazy and forced and half arsed then they should call it a day.
or at least give up on new music and just tour.

According to anyone, I think 8 years and counting is too much between albums. I would be ashamed to be in a huge band that has millions(?) of people waiting and it would take this long.
