Top 5 a year later:
1. Hardwired 2. Am I Savage? 3. Dream No More 4. Spit Out The Bone 5. Moth Into Flame
Hardwired is still the paragon of perfection, but Savage/Dream/Spit have caught up a bit. Those three are pretty much interchangeable at ranks 2-4.
Worst is still NTWD. It just keeps getting worse, I think.

After one year, where do you rank HWTSD among Metallica's discography? I think it's actually in the Top 5, maybe even Top 3. It's that fucking good.

It's really hard to rank some of the albums, but I have a strong feeling about the Top 3 and Bottom 2.
1. Justice 2. Black 3. HWTSD 4-5. Ride/Reload, depends on the day 6-8. Load/MOP/KEA in almost any order really 9. St. Anger 10. DM
Sometimes I might rank Ride or Reload over HWTSD. Or not. Or would I? All in all, all the albums are pretty much fantastic, except St. Anger and DM. And even they are mostly really good.

Metallica is one of those bands that my favorite album list heavily fluctuates with. A lot of my other favorite bands are not the same way, so it's hard for me to pin it with them. But I can comfortably say that in any mood HW is in my top 3 from them. There are honestly times where I enjoy it more than any other music they've put out because of the quality of the songs themselves as well as the dynamics of style.

HWTSD. I have never gotten tired of a Metallica album so fast. It's alright I guess, it has good production, a handful of decent to great song. I haven't listened to it much or wanted to since after the show I saw back in July.
I'll pop on a select few tracks from the bunch, but a good chunk of the songs I could never listen to again and not really care.
Murder One and NTWD are still the worst IMO. Atlas, depends on the day and mood.
Today, I'd place the album above Reload and St Anger, maybe KEA.
The few songs that are great on the album are fucking great and save the album. If those songs weren't on there, it would have been another flop album.

I've always restrained myself from making any kind of rankings. I don't even know what is my favorite album of Metallica. But one year later I can say with confidence that HTSD is their best album in the 21st century. And to me that is the most important thing. I don't think that I could keep up with another album with the quality of DM.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spit_Out_the_BoneSpit out the bone was released as a single on November 14! Had no idea. There's a radio edit of it (2:32 shorter) out there apparently. I wonder what they cut out.

I listened to DM on my commute today for the first time in a good while and I have to agree. Between the production and inflated songs, coupled with having Hardwired now to compare it against something a little better, the whole album is a bit of a mess.

The songwriting is better on DM imo, it's their best album since TBA. HW has better production though (obviously).

Yeah, if HWTSD had the same production as DM, you guys would be shitting all over it.

Yeah, if HWTSD had the same production as DM, you guys would be shitting all over it. The production, yes. But the songs themselves are so much better on HWTSD, it wouldn't matter as much. Conversely, even if DM had the same production as HWTSD, I'd still shit all over (most of) it.
