I think Halo was the biggest surprise on the album for me. I really don't think it follows any sort of Metallica formula, and is a lot different than any of their other ballad-y songs so far. As soon as it went into the Remember Tomorrow-esque beat in the verse I was like WOAH. Love the verses. The chorus is anticlimatic though since I don't think it's as good as the verses. The chorus balances on a knifes edge for me, but it just tips the right way. I can understand why others would have a problem with it though, because the verses are spectacular. Spit is miles ahead if Dyers Eve for me, but I can't say it rivals Blackened and Damage which are the two best thrash songs ever created. I also think Spit benefits a lot from the element of surprise, no one ever thought they could write a song like that anymore. With that said, Spit it something else, it's a song that just separates Metallica from most metal bands out there, because of the amazing melodies and Hetfields godlike vocals.

Spit is great but it gets a little like Rebel of Babylon, as in crammed full of different sections that don’t fit.
I hate that slow section before the solo, it’s so unnecessary, and the transition away from it is jarring. Especially in these live performances. Really brings the song down for me I think.

Oh please. Spit is NOWHERE as disjointed as songs like Rebel. You are talking about one of the best songs they've made in years.

Spit is weird, because I do think it's one of their best songs in years but I also think it has one of the few very unnecessary moments on the album (whereas DM had a shit ton of them). That heavy part is so shoehorned in there, and I agree yep, live really showed that.

I kinda like the heavy section of the slow part, but that's partly because the drum sound suddenly gets exaggeratedly massive for that small bit. It's a fun little detail. Song definitely doesn't need the slow section at all, though, but I feel like it doesn't detract too much from the overall package. Was a bit of a drag in the live version though, definitely.

I'd love to hear the original 12 min version or how long it was. I think it's pretty much perfect as it is, the slow crushing part is one of my favorite parts in the entire song.

Spit is very good, some of the best thrash they've written and the melodic section after 3:57 is damn sexy.
8/10

Went through the solos on HW, the best ones imo:
1.Now That We're Dead 2.Atlas 3.Moth

NTWD is definitely the best but Atlas is pretty shit honestly. It's generic Kirk noodling and Suicide & Redemption.

Hey now, I really do think NTWD is just as memorable as anything Kirk did in the 90s. Not necessarily better, but it has that same melodic sense to it. It's a lot more singable and a lot less shreddy than the rest of the solos.

I love the heavy slow part in Spit.
YOU TURN ... TO STONE!!! CAN'T LOOK AWAY!

I don't really like NTWD that much and haven't been listening to it. I remember to solo though. Not that I like it that much, but I remember it.

I love the heavy slow part in Spit. YOU TURN ... TO STONE!!! CAN'T LOOK AWAY! That’s Dream No More. Really? In that case I don't like the heavy slow part in Spit. It feels out of place. I also don't like the not so heavy fast section. It feels like it doesn't belong there.

Top 3 videos? 1. HW 2. NTWD 3. LOS 1. Spit Out The Bone - the campy B-movie scifi style is just hilarious. 2. Dream No More - I think the visuals just really well convey lovecraftian madness in a modern setting. 3. Here Comes Revenge - the animation is very well done and looks cool.

Spit is one of the worst videos they've done imo. Come on now, it is awesome. Atlas is easily their worst video though, followed by Mama Said and For Whom the Bell Tolls probably.

It was bad enough that they ditched the project before it ever got released. Probably still not as bad as Atlas though.
