The drum beat seems to be what people don't like.
I get the beat. It fits the timing. It's somewhat unconventional, but it works.

ManUnkind is my favorite song so far. Yeah I'm surprised it wasn't received well here. It's good, we have a bit of everything on this album. It is pretty jarring. I admire the fact that they took a chance on that track and did something different. I enjoyed it more on my second listen for sure. That tells me I should hold off on judging it completely until I give it some time. |

I listened to it again. Still don't love it. There's some great stuff for sure, but for me it does suffer from having a bunch of songs with pretty much the same tempo. Part of why I love Ride the Lightning so much, for example, is how it perfectly balances the fast stuff with the slow/mid-tempo stuff which helps everything stand out. I feel like I might like ManUNkind (that's how it's spelt by the way, with a capital N) a lot more if it were surrounded by songs that contrast with it a bit more, but as it is it's kind of just another mid-tempo songs in a sea of mid-tempo songs and it really has nothing that sticks out to me. And Murder One is just not a good song.
I think this record as a whole would excite me a lot more with a couple more fast songs in the mix. And that three-minute long fart that starts out the album doesn't count.

I agree with nothing jumps out, but it has a subtle brilliance around it, that makes that not matter, if that makes sense? Fucking love it. Makes complete sense. Get the feeling it's one of those albums that will improve with each listen initially. I think it's my new October Rust in that respect |

It hits me as weird how the reviewers were all shitting on Confusion. The main riff is fucking mammoth, the Am I Evil? part is sweet, the melodies during the verses are killer, the lead work is great, and the riff before the main solo crushed my skull into oblivion.
