Which brings me to the worst culprit of all when it comes to milking franchises: Capcom And they always fuck it up. Remember when Dead Rising was actually fun? I actually thought that game was pretty boring after the first hour or so....

Just finished Uncharted 3. Well, that took you long enough Haha, well, I discovered the Uncharted games quite late because for a very long time I didn't have a console.

Breath of the Wild is the most critically acclaimed game this generation and couldn't be more different from its predecessors. I don't see how you can say "same old shit" with a straight face after posting a Forza 7 trailer. Let's not pretend Sony and Microsoft aren't as bad at milking their franchises. Worse yet, the Nth game in a Sony and Microsoft franchise is usually a technically superior version of the first game, whereas Nintendo games might use the same characters but the games can be wildly different (Mario and Rabbids is a tactical X-Com game). Plus the gap between the mainline releases in a major Nintendo franchise is usually huge; the last major 3D Mario game was 7 years ago. The last Zelda 6 years ago. MS and Sony have 3rd Party on board. Nintendont Yeah that's definitely their weakest link when it comes to software, but criticizing their first party games is like very last on my list of Nintendo criticisms. At least Mario & Rabbids (made by Ubisoft) is a positive sign that they're now open to handing off their biggest names to third parties; I hope they continue with that.

I was a Sega and Amiga kid growing up. I didn’t have a NES or SNES. I did go with the 64 instead of the PlayStation though, and loved Mario Kart and GoldenEye. I did also have Zelda and Mario on 64, but they appealed way more to my younger brother than me. I did also have an original GameBoy that I loved playing Tetris and Wario Land (or World?) I did play Mario and Zelda at mates houses and stuff, but I mainly loved games I had on my Sega and Amiga. Games like Streets of Rage and Golden Axe. Mortal Kombat and Shinobi. Sonic and Xenon 2.
As an adult, these games still appeal to me. I recently ordered an overclocked and Modded Mega Drive to play all these games again. Mario and Zelda games do not appeal to me in the slightest because that nostalgia connection doesn’t exist for me. As someone who knows nothing about Nintendo in 2017, it certainly does look like they focus mainly on that nostalgia market and getting people who grew up with these franchises to play the latest instalments. What else do they have to offer?

Nintendo is big with the next generation. Kids love all that bubbly, cartoony stuff. Nintendo will always be the family/cross generation system. Young and old can play together and have a blast.
When I have a birthday party going on at my house, the Wii is still a hit, everyone wants in on the bowling action etc.
There is a whole new generation hooked on Pokémon, Mario and all that stuff. To say Nintendo is marketing towards the nostalgic crowd is just plain crazy. They know what they are doing. PS and Xbox is geared towards a distinct group of "Men", while Nintendo will always rack it in with all the casuals, young and old.

What else do they have to offer? Some of the best games of all time in their respective genres. Some of the best game designers in the industry. I have zero nostalgic attachment to Nintendo; the Wii was my first home Nintendo console, I went Commodore > Mega Drive > PS1 > PS2. I only played the 2D Mario Games for the first time about 6 years ago. They're still just great games, with or without nostalgia. Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are the best 3D platformers I've ever played. Games like New Super Mario Brothers are nostalgia plays; the old gameplay with a new lick of paint, but their main games have changed and evolved dramatically and it massively undersells them to just think of them as targeted nostalgia given that they're some of the most innovative and borrowed from games ever. Like Mario 64 literally invented the first 3D free-look camera and controls for a third person 3D game. They built a genre from the ground up, establishing rules that are still used in games today that we take for granted. And then instead of logically making Mario 64 2 they did a sharp turn into focusing on physics-based water mechanics (Sunshine is the worst 3D Mario game though, but hey, they tried something different). And now they've just completely reinvented Zelda and its one of the most acclaimed games of all time. It's totally fine to just not like the games but the strength of their design and developers cannot be emphasized enough.

Happy to be wrong, like I said, I don’t follow Nintendo or know much (anything) about their modern games. They may very well make the best games in their respective genres, but aren’t they niche genres that Nintendo invented? There aren’t going to be many, say, platform fans, who don’t like Mario. If someone is a fan of new(ish) cartoony, platform type games, it’s most likely because they played and love Mario 64. It’s like saying that Nintendo make the best games in the Nintendo genre. Out of Mario 64 and all the Mario 64 clones, Mario 64 is the best. It’s not like the latest Mario is competing with Grand Theft Auto 5 or the latest Zelda game is competing with Skyrim. I guess I see Nintendo is operating its in own little world, which is full of games that are aimed at enticing younger players, yet are built of nostalgia franchises/IP so that they also appeal to an older generation that grew up with Nintendo. This is all my uninformed opinion, as an outsider looking in. Not only did I stop following Nintendo decades ago, I stopped keeping up with modern games completely over the last couple of years

This is all my uninformed opinion, as an outsider looking in. Not only did I stop following Nintendo decades ago, I stopped keeping up with modern games completely over the last couple of years It depends on the period of time if we're talking how niche a genre us. Like 3D platformers were huge in the PS1/PS2 generation, and all of them ripped off Mario 64. But developers in all genres were taking bits and pieces from Mario and Zelda cos nobody had a clue how to design for a 3D world aside from fixed position viewpoints like FPS, racing and fighting games. How do you control the character? What about the camera? How do you deal with depth perception when jumping? What if the camera or character moves into a wall? Again, things that we take for granted today that Nintendo solved, and were forward thinking enough to realise an analog stick would be needed for full 360 control (PS1 & Saturn shipped with just a D-Pad). It's telling that 3D games developed in tandem with Mario 64, and thus without the luxury of copying it, like Tomb Raider, control like horseshit in hindsight and have a bunch of issues. Mario 64 still has tight controls today. Zelda is a weird one cos it has changed so much but its influence is all over the place (including Skyrim, and vice versa). Speaking of Mario competing with GTA, Dan Houser (founder of Rockstar): "Anyone who makes 3D games who says they've not borrowed something from Mario or Zelda on the Nintendo 64 is lying".

Might also be the best looking game I’ve played.
