Load had the benefit of following the black album hype. not surprised by Justice given that it has 3 live staples; One, Harvester, and Blackened. One a top 3 Metallica song.
older records will never be touched now that music has gone digital and there's a thing called piracy.

Confirms my opinion: those are the best 5 Metallica albums. I'd switch MoP out of the Top 5 for Hardwired, but otherwise, yeah those are the best Metallica albums.

I'm not saying MoP is a bad album, I just don't think it's quite as great as most people think. To me, it's a bit overrated, kinda like Rust in Peace is for Megadeth.

MOP is a great record, but we all know that it's greatness has been inflated by the posthumous aggrandizing of Cliff Burton that even today remains at "heath ledger" levels of ridiculous.

But for me, for an album to be considered a masterpiece is one that I skip zero tracks on. MOP is that for me. I can listen to it from start to finish without interuption.

This is definitely a part of why I don't rate MoP as high as most. I hate the American tradition of glorifying the dead. A tragic death does not make an artist better or untouchable. Of course Burton was great and I love his playing on the old albums, but come on. He's not a god.

MoP received high praise before Cliff died but I do get what you mean.

MoP received high praise before Cliff died but I do get what you mean. For sure, but would it have been glorified as much is Cliff lived? I mean, it'd still probably be considered an all-time great metal album, but as untouchable as it is now? I doubt it.

Maybe the peak had already been reached....if not then the followup could be the one everyone today holds in the highest regard.

Most of the 'What if Cliff had lived' talk centers around the stylistic changes on TBA and Load but very rarely is it 'how would they have followed up MOP'. There's a school of thought, perhaps, that the death of Cliff had some bearing on the unwieldy nature of AJFA: gone is the bludgeoning thrash and in place, a more controlled and thought-out technicality. Almost the opposite to Cliff's nature or improv and "wild lead bass stuff. Interesting....

Cliff died so Justice could exist. Change my mind.

I'd say the greatest metal album of all time is a toss up between MOP and TBA, closely followed by CTE.
