Yup. Festivals in the US next year. Whoopdee-doo. What about the Aus/NZ fans? Or how about working on some music instead of yet another greatest hits set list to a crowd that doesn’t give a shit. I guess it means Hetfield had an idea of how long he would be in rehab though. No way they’d announce this if it was as uncertain as the first time. |

I wasn't expecting anything other than gig announcements for next year, but fucking hell I would've even taken Orion 2020 over this. It's just terrible optics, really, making a big festival announcement now after cancelling a whole Aus/NZ tour because Hetfield's off to rehab.To me it reeks of another good old fashioned money grab with no soul in it, complete with a nonsense video where they jack off about what a special and unique thing this is.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Q-Prime had a hand in this and they were already gearing up to announce this, it was just an awkward time to do it after what happened. I'm sure they'll reschedule dates for AUSNZ, but this is a bit weird. I also find it sad that they have to make a big deal out of playing US dates.

But let’s not place every action that we don’t like on their shoulders. I don’t think anyone tells Lars and James what to do if they really don’t want to do it. Something like this would have been in the works for a looong time, definitely prehab for Hetfield. Th timing has more to do with the promoter than anything else. Festivals of this nature get announced months ahead of time (look at Glastonbury that sold out in half an hour, last week, scheduled for next August). I get the distaste. I get the whole thing over Aus/NZ. There are factors that play into why they can announce this and not rescheduled Aus/NZ dates (namely that they have nothing to do with organising the Rockville stuff, they turn up and play. The Aus stuff is totally their gig.... staging, security, gear, event staff etc etc). But there is a positive that, on reflection, I’m taking from this and that’s that James must have known how long he would need. That suggests to me that perhaps it’s not as huge as the first stint. Perhaps he needed a bit of re-tooling and it wasn’t a complete crash. We also don’t know why he went back, lots of talk about booze but it could be anything. So yeah... that’s my essay on it all. Sorry. |
