I'm shocked they aren't pushing for a Xmas release at the latest.
I'm going tonight. It's going to be a blast.

Saw it tonight. Was pretty good but the standalone performances by the orchestra just seemed kinda unnecessary and would have preferred more Metallica songs instead. Also my fucking motorbike got stolen while I was at the cinema watching it grrrrr.

I'm going tonight, really looking forward to it. I'm treating it as possibly the last time I'll ever see them "live" because who knows - James may not come back.

I'm taking my kid and it's a school night so I was planning on bailing out around NEM. Also, was there 20 minutes of trailers, or did it pretty much jump right in? And sorry about your wheels.

No trailers at least here in Finland, but about 20 minutes worth of "how did it come to this" documentary thing.

Oh yeah, I saw S&M2 tonight. Iiiiiit was pretty fucking awesome. If this was to be the last time Metallica played live (which I don't really believe, but it's not impossible), then it's a fine send-off. Yeah, some more older songs would've been nice, and yeah, I could've done without the orchestra-only stuff, but to be honest, especially the Iron Foundry piece was really cool.
The highlights of the show for me were All Within My Hands, The Unforgiven III and that crazy, badass version of Anesthesia. Wherever I May Roam was also superb.
The cinema that showed the concert here has the new Dolby Atmos sound system, and good goddamn it sounded fantastic - and LOUD! My ears are still ringing, so I won't be able to sleep anytime soon... But damn, it was totally worth it.
Oh yeah, and I have a huge mancrush on the conductor, Edwin Outwater. Fuck he's gorgeous.

It might be that they rushed out the mix for this and will be taking their time doing a proper downscaled mix for the album/video release. Although I'm actually a bit concerned they won't even release the video now since it's just the album they're promoting. Oh well. In any case it's a dumb move to not have it out for all the potential Christmas shoppers well ahead of time in November.

To be honest, I’m not that interested, certainly not enough to watch it in a cinema.
I watched some phone clips on YouTube when the shows happened to satisfy my curiosity, but other than that I’ll just wait for the Spotify/home release and give it a couple of listens.
Was never a huge fan of the original, but understand most people love it.

Saw it, enjoyed it a lot. But due to the James stuff I couldn't help but suss him out for clues and other than being older he really did l ike look a little flame gone out. Bit bloaty. If I had no idea about rehab, I'd be thinking he's sick. Voice had a few dodge moments early and the band took a few songs to relax but I'm sure that was due to the stress of such a performance. Unforgiven 3 was cool but looked like James wanted his guitar - I'm sure it was his choice to go without. Lady in my cinema row, whooped and cheered James after that one, which was funny being in a cinema but it did loosen other people up and there was a bit more cheering after that. Anaesthesia was sick - loved it - could have watched more of that. Through the whole show Robs bass sounded so thick and heavy. If I can hear that from the proper release at my place I'll be very happy. I wonder how James thought / thinks of his performance. Big show and always very high expectations. He does come across to me right now as, not faking it, but there's a bit of paint-by-numbers in his stage show. Don't even like saying that, but if I'm honest thats what I'm thinking. My mate popped out for a beer and told me some dude was standing to the side by the cinema entry recording the film on his phone.... people still do this hey?

Just got home. What a show. I felt the same about James as Ford, knowing what we know now. You could see the pain, or something, swirling in him. His eyes were sad, During Kutulu he seemed pissed off in distant kind of way. I couldn't help but over analyze, and was even in my head comparing edited shots, because he did seem a bit drunk or something more so during certain parts IMO, whichever night the footage of Clover was from. His mannerism on those nights clips felt a bit to real, like poking his finger into the side of his head while saying certain lines, and his tippsy glazed smiles etc. During Day, I got a bit teary eyed at on point during the verses, he just seemed so vulnerable and alone or something. It made me sad.
Ok, the positive.
My kid had a blast. He was jumping in his seat and kicking, going nuts. He got to see Halo, Confusion, and Day which are the songs he loves. It was a great time. I found the documentary stuff at the beginning very interesting, and the Symphony only track and then the piece with Metallica where up there in the top moments for me simply because it was something new and fresh.
We bailed after U3. My kid was tired and getting restless so it felt like the right time to split, U3 and all. I don't mind, I'll catch the rest at some point. It just felt right to end it after U3.

I gotta say I agree with you Fordy and SicJes, I too found myself really monitoring James all through the show - every little gesture and motion. Might be just over-analyzing, but he didn't seem... Right. Sure, he's getting old and that affects the way you look, but still... He looked way worse than just a year or so ago.
I remember thinking during Unforgiven III, when he was singing "How can I blame you, when it's me I can't forgive?", that there was some real pain there. Like he knows he'd fucked up, and can't blame anyone but himself. I really hope he gets his shit back together.

I think that you guys are autosuggesting yourself that impression based on that latest news. I absolutely didn't see anything abnormal about him apart from looking old but I wouldn't atribute it to anything but time.
The concert was great. The footage and cinematography were stunning. Audio was hit and miss but it might have been caused by the theatre. Final comparison in terms of audio mix quality should be reserved till cd comes out.
And I'm gonna say something for which I would have been ostracized on places like forums.metallica.com but I think that Hets voice has been very weak for the most part of this century with very few exceptions here and there (beginning of 2012 and 2013). For the last 10-15 years his voice got high and frail and it was really apparent on those shows. 3 years of touring didn't help and sometimes he really sounded very worned out and exhausted. I'm not gonna blame him though. Vocal cords are part of the body and they also get old just like the skin but It is really puzzling how every time they put out new clips/videos/music people always write silly stiff like that he is sounding the best since 1989/1991/1992/whatever.

Saw it at the cinema yesterday. I'm glad that I've been able to avoid seeing the setlist for the shows 'cause that made it more exciting than if I would have. Overall it was an awesome experience. The sound in the cinema was loud and there was a good amount of bass so that was great. People were a bit stiff at first but pretty soon at least some people (including me) started to let loose a bit more. No one stood up as far as I know, but at least it felt socially acceptable after a while to headbang, sing along (pretty quietly) and play drums on your legs, so that was awesome and made the experience even better! After a while people even started to applaud a little after more or less each song, so that was cool.
The highlights for me were The Outlaw torn and No leaf clover. Nothing else matters too I'd say. The The Unforgiven 3 performance/arrangement was also really cool and unexpected and I think it worked really well. The Cliff tribute was great as well. The biggest let-down was definitely that they didn't play The Thing that should not be. I was a bit surprised actually and yeah, a little bummed. The track done by the orchestra didn't do much for me. I didn't mind that they got a chance to shine on their own, but somehow I felt like that they might as well have let Metallica play a song on their own too then. I liked that they did something different, but yeah, the song just wasn't that good so it kinda fell flat at bit for me. The classical number they did together was a bit better but not great either.
Overall I do think the older stuff sounded better than the new stuff in terms of arrangements. Most of the arrangements for the newer songs felt a bit too faithful to the arrangements of the studio versions, if that makes sense. I mean that with Michael Kamen's arrangements there were quite a lot of new counter-melodies that (most often) elevated the songs. With the new songs it felt like the arrangements mostly just accentuated the riffs, which isn't bad in itself, but yeah, it just didn't feel as dynamic as the older songs so it felt a bit more stale and because of this at times it felt like the orchestra didn't make much difference to the song. It just sounded like a beefed up Metallica, rather than a collaboration. The new song that felt the most worked on and dynamic was Halo on fire for me (and The Unforgiven 3 of course).
Last but not least: It was really cool that they decided to do something from each album!

I had to walk home from Marion to O'Halloran Hill. Left just after 10 and got home at about midnight. I'm pretty sure I saw you and your friend if I remembered correctly where you were sitting. You had long hair/ponytail and ya friend had a cap on? I didn't get up and say Hi cos I wasn't sure if it was you or not and it would have been awkward. Fucking pissed about the bike. I contacted Marion security and they sent the surveillance footage to the police but I don't know if they even got any good footage or not. Rang them again today and they said they would be in contact.

Moth was awesome. Those little flute bits during the verses added this kind of silly nuttyness.
The mix was great here, and it was as loud as a real concert where I was sitting. 2 minutes in Kutulu, I was thinking "shit, my kids gonna get hearing damage"
Laying down to sleep last night, my mind kept thinking about James and where he might have been last night, and hoping he has found some sort of peace of mind. I don't think I'm overthinking or reacting, the guy looked damaged. It was like walking into a hospital room when you're loved one is pretty messed up and you put on a smile in the moment, but in your thoughts you're like "Holy shit". Touched a little to close to home for me.
I hope the cops find that fucker Smithers. That really sucks for you.

I too looked for clues, didn't find anything. He looked like he loved it. Unforgiven 3 was fucking incredible, I kept thinking of the making of the black album and how he was so nervous to sing "properly" - I felt weirdly proud of a middle aged multimillionaire that I've never met.
The show was fucking great....the symphony adds so much extra, it's a shame they can't tour with them.
Day, Clover, Memory, Moth, Pulling Teeth, Unforgiven 3 and NEM were the standouts for me. They also did such a great job with the staging, lighting, editing etc. it was a masterpiece.

The sound was fantastic for me in the theater but there were definitely some moments of weird mixing (Kirk’s solos felt buried a couple of times). Also, I’m pretty confident most if not all of the show was from Night 2 which is pretty damn cool to have a film shot at a show I went to. At least the dialogue was (the post-Memory chant when Lars wanted the crowd to stop was so cool to be a part of).

I wouldn’t dare say this on the official forums, but I think they’re putting a little too much effort into the album. They delayed the Black Album strictly because it would cannibalize sales. I don’t think S&M will sell as well as they think it will, and I’m hoping that they don’t waste time touring on the damn thing, considering they’re probably in the last stretch of their career.

Not really excited by the S&M2 release, the first one was good enough imo and no need for a sequel.

Wild prediction, TBA box is being pushed closer to the 30th anniversary (year not release date) because they are going to do a 30th anniversary tour for it. Maybe not play the whole album, but, more of it than usual, and just TBA themed.

I think the Black Album box set will be super successful whenever they sell it, where’s they need to milk the S&M2 thing before people forget about it.
