This might be the first time a Metallica song scared me with how dark and twisted it is. Just an overall malicious feeling throughout this whole song. This is not a band trying to be heavy or play speed. This is something truly evil happening here. Like I can't even describe it. Just this feeling you would have when you've hit rock bottom in life, you have only been done wrong up until this point and you just want the whole world to fucking die. Let's talk about the song itself.
The vocals of James are on point. The drumming is fucking flawless. The bass is audible but not to the point of being overpowering and the riffs are just god tier. But the atmosphere this song has is unlike anything I have ever heard before. Just pure wickedness in audio form. I would put it up there with my top 10 favorite Metallica songs for sure.

One of my favourite songs off St Anger, love it.
Love most of that album, except Purify.

The dreamy bridge with the high notes, and the hell the breaks loose following are fantastic. The clean verse is decent enough, most of the rest is kind of shit. Needs some serious editing.

Like most St. Anger songs, it has a couple of great riffs, one or two great sections, a whole bucket of cringe, and goes on for many minutes too long.

Although it's in my name, St. Anger should be really called The James Hetfield Therapy Album. Lyrics are pretty brutal, but they tried a bit too hard to be nu metal. Seriously I can see Slipknot or KoRn covering the entire album and it would fit.

St. Anger is definitely a painful therapy album. Like watching an injured athlete painfully trying to learn to walk again. Not enjoyable.

The greatness of St. Anger is best exemplified by the StAnger2015 fan project. The song material is pretty great, and with tighter arrangements and better production the album would be extraordinary.

They should redo the whole, or most, or some tracks, for the rerelease. The album just feels like a demo/missed opportunity. There are some amazing highs on it. Lars's best drumming over shadowed by horrible sound choices. Kind of sad.

They didn't bother to up the bass on AJFA, I doubt they are going to remix St. Anger.

Not a remix, a cover of their own song, a redo. At least one track would be cool.

I agree with just about everything you wrote, but I do think Harvester Of Sorrow (especially the Moscow 91 version) has a somewhat similar atmosphere to it– though AWMH is a far more visceral experience. They both kind of feel like you’re taking a journey into a heart of darkness. You might enjoy reading an analysis of it that I posted on Reddit last year where I likened it to the threatening theatrics of the wizard in The Wizard of Oz. It’s a good analogy, I think, but whereas the theatrics of the wizard of Oz was pure fakery, I do think the rage in AWHM is very real. I also used to rank it in my top 10 , but that was maybe 5-10 years ago when I was in a very different place mentally and emotionally. In addition to the dark, menacing feel of it the main reason it connected with me it was that I could relate to the meaning behind it. It might be the greatest song I've ever heard about the inability to love.

It's interesting as an acoustic song, the hate me now could be the heavy/distorted part though.

Imagine what they could do in the studio if they did a full on acoustic album.

That was really good! Somehow it reminded me of the S&M era. Maybe it's just because James is sitting down like he did during for example Hero of the day...I don't know.
