Things like this are played up in America all the time too.
To me it's dumb/overblown on both sides.
What will changing a lyric to the anthem do? It isn't even egregious. The COUNTRY is young, duh.
But also who gives a fuck that this little kid doesn't want to stand. First of all, she's just a kid who's almost certainly doing what her parents tell her is right. Second of all, why do people care about some people trying to change things they don't agree with peacefully? You may disagree with them, and that's cool, but I see so many people getting mad about it and at least around here the outrage is just so overboard.

Yes it's seen as disrespectful here too it's been a gigantic news story for like 3 years now that NFL players are kneeling during the anthem as a protest. People have been losing their minds over it.

It's a primal, tribal thing. Someone trying to distractingly stand out and get special attention during a specific time when no one else wants to see that.

As disrespectful as it may be, those diggers died for that freedom for them to be disrespectful pricks. Let them do it and just fucking ignore them. This sort of shit divides the nation and pushes everyone to a side. For what? Some dumb ass kid?

The real problem here is just the internet/info age where everything can be made a big deal and of course the media loves pushing it for ratings. It works. How far would have a little Aussie girl not standing for the anthem gone 20 years ago? Not far. And here we are talking about it. And I really don't care about any of this anthem at sporting events btw, (I don't even watch much sports) just observing the distraction.

And? You either decide to be offended or you don't. That's your problem.

In regards to practically everything else I would agree that it is up to the individual. Do what you want, what do I care? But when it comes to this topic I don't have the same outlook and I guess its because it has been ingrained since I was young. It feels wrong, it looks wrong. And while I feel that way, it does not mean that I will be getting in your face and sharing my thoughts either. I'm likely to ignore it anyway, I doubt I'd be tapping anyone on the shoulder for not standing other than maybe my kids, so I guess I am letting people do as they please anyway, I just don't agree with it.
As Sig said above, if a young girl decided not to stand for the anthem while I was at school, the whole issue including a punishment would have been contained within the school, probably even within the classroom it occurred. Now there are the means to share the story and everyone's opinion on it. Unnecessary, but thats where we are, and everyone is aware of that including this girls parents.

Growing up here in Canada, we had to stand for the Anthem at assemblies, etc. And sing it in English and French, and sometimes the hybrid bilingual version. I never had a problem with that, nor did my friends. We where proud Canadians. If some tool boycotted it we'd have probably have kicked their traitorous ass and spit on them.

I think if someone didn't stand at the AFL finals we are having at the moment they'd get a few looks. maybe a few drunken Collingwood fans would get in their face? Richmond's going to win. I hope West Coast win but Melbourne is looking really good.

Hoping for the Melbs to get up I'm a Dockers fan so there's not much hope of any finals for me in the near future my brother is a West Coast supporter so I hope they win for him but the D's are looking really good.

Of the 4 teams left, I would prefer the Melb v WC game to be the Grand Final. But instead we will have to put up with Richmond or Pies making it. I think yepsure is a Pies fan from memory

yeah, yepsure is a pies fan but I think the Tigers will win. I hate to say it but I think only Melbourne can give Richmond a good go.

They should do it like in Nebuchadnezzar’s day and just throw this girl into a burning, fiery furnace.
Damn this little girl and her freedom of choice and speech and religion! Who does she think she is? A citizen in a democratic nation? Someone should force her to sing that song so that she truly appreciates what it’s like to live in a free country!
