Queensland schoolgirl threatened with suspension after refusing to stand for national anthem
"we are young and free", so she objects to the word young. she's right that the Aboriginals were here thousands of years before the whites. but what should the lyric be changed to "some of us have been here alot longer than others and we are free"? < it just doesn't fit ^ her face says "I'm so smart and my Mum & Dad have taught me about history, so I'm going to point out a fault in the anthem" 🙄 shall we sing 'we treated the aboriginals terribly and wiped them out in Tassie. the atrocities were numerous' yeah lets put that in the anthem

She has a very punchable, smug little face, yes. But what's with the obsession both Americans and Australians (and many others, I'm sure) seem to have with having to stand during the national anthem? Or, to be exact, the obsession to punish those who choose not to?

Dump her in Iran for a few days and see if the request to stand for our anthem is still a big deal after that.
Standing shows respect. I love the feeling of hearing our anthem and standing with everyone. I think of what we have here and it makes me, and reminds me to, appreciate it.
All countries have made mistakes, but if its something you can't tolerate or be part of then go somewhere else.
Kids like this grow up to be annoying fucking adults.

Honestly I don't give a fuck what they do. We are a free country. What I don't like is how the media is blowing it up and giving it so much publicity, including the parents. It was obviously their doing. That's fine, their kid, their life, free country. But don't make a fucking big deal of it because that is what they want. They're not special or anything. Who gives a fuck? Let's just ignore them because it's not worth any attention.

After posting in this thread I had more thoughts about this topic and some of them contradict what I have written.
My comments were directed at a 9 year old girl. And of course this crap has not come from a 9 year old, it has come from her parents. It is them that criticism should be aimed at. For many its a big deal what she has done and the parents have purposely put her out there like that, pretty much with a target of sorts painted on her. What a shit thing to do. And for what? Attention. But most of the attention will likely be negative.
The other thing that I don't like yet kind of support in my first post is the whole 'you need to do what the school says or go elsewhere' . Yes, in this case I do believe the school should stick to their guns. If you aren't prepared to participate in the anthem properly then here's your suspension or maybe choose to be educated elsewhere. But, I also encourage kids to question the rules.
And this is because some rules are fucking stupid made by people who have not thought things through properly but because it is in a rulebook it is a must-do, regardless of it being sensible or moronic. Last year (or earlier this year) a school here was sending dozens of students home because their school shoes did not have a heel within the required height tolerance. It is something stupid like a 10mm tolerance, and the shoes had to have a heel. Not too high, not too low, just right. Why? Black shoes, clean, no labels, no stripes, what's the bloody difference if they are 2 mm higher than the other pair?
So yeah, stand up for yourself and common sense, and say I'm not conforming to that just because someone said so. But you should be standing for our anthem. You are being disrespectful to your home and everyone else standing while you sit.

I don't put stickers on my cars....tacky! But I have no issue with that sticker - I see it a lot (normally under the Bundy Rum sticker)
I take offense to the stick figure family ones though.
No one cares what you and your family members favourite hobbies are, get the fuck out of my way you dick.

So is it like the pledge of allegiance thing in 'murika? it's just a being grateful for living in Australia thing. if you go to a footy match, during the final series they will play the anthem. they will ask the crowd to stand during it, it's just about saying 'I'm so blessed to live in this country'.

Because not standing for an anthem doesn't mean you're being disrespectful to anything.
If I don't feel like standing, for whatever reason, it's my reason and I don't have to justify it to anyone. I respect your choice to stand. You should equally respect mine to not do so, without question. When you start telling me what's what, that's when disrespect comes into play. The "you" is not aimed at anyone. It's a generic "you".

Why were they singing it in a school? when I was in primary school in the 80's, they would play the anthem during assembly and we'd all stand for it. if we didn't then you'd be in trouble with the teachers. but I think asking kids to stand is good as it's teaching respect for the country they live in.

Stand for the anthem snowflake. No, it's part of indoctrination. You can think it teaches "respect" all you want but it doesn't. It teaches routine. When you force someone to respect something without choice then you've already lost.

It shouldn't because you have no right to determine that for someone else. You don't get to tell someone to do this because you find it disrespectful if they don't. How is that not disrespectful in and of itself? Respect is asking why and talking about it. It would be like if you're religious and I'm not, and you want to pray before a meal and I don't, but you try and force me to do so or you'll feel disrespected because, in your mind, I don't respect your beliefs. The problem there is, you don't respect mine. That's the point I'm making.
Without mutual respect you get idiots like Sig saying "stabnd fer muh flag and antem er your the debel no repsekt muu hhhh snowflake"
