I hate to say it, but I think it's time for him to go... Kirk's been in the band since the moment they burst into the public consciousness. Whether he retired or was sacked, it wouldn't be the same without him. You know how some fans still miss Jason or Cliff? Multiply that by 10.

Agreed, Kirk is an awesome lead player and even though he tends to lean a bit on that wah pedal, lol, I can't imagine Metallica w/o him and his sweet playing.

One day Kirk will die. Hopefully it's in 30+ years but you never know, it could be in 2 years....then we'll all miss him and give anything to have him back fucking up the One intro.
Lars should get way more criticism than Kirk. Kirk can't help his fuck ups, Lars actively overplays and ruins songs.
By this point though, we just have to enjoy it and appreciate they're still here.

Saw this the other in a comment on YouTube, couldn't help laughing.
What is Kirk Hammett's favorite kind of dog?
A Chi-wah-wah!

There are a few bands knocking about where a rotating lineup is kind of accepted because it's what they've done since day one. A band like King Crimson is a perfect example of this. Fans of that band learn very early on to separate the people from the music. In the case of a band like Metallica, those two things become hopelessly intertwined. The people in the band are as much Metallica as the music is. Every time you change a member, it's not Metallica as much. That new person not only has to develop their own caché, but do it in the shadow of who they're replacing. In Kirk's case, that shadow is almost all-encompassing. I mean, Jason just about managed it. I don't know what hope there is for someone where Metallica are surely nearer the end of their career than the beginning.

Its a moot point - there will be no more replacements, way too far down the road for that kinda thing.
