Remember how this was the buzzword for the 1st half of SKOM? Stock riff. Stock drumbeat. Arguments ensue.
Was it a valid critique?
It didn't sound to me like the riffs and beats James and Lars were formulating sounded wildly different to any of their other music, especially if you consider that a lot of this stuff they were making was in the embryonic stage before you apply an artistic process to make it more interesting.
But if stockness was such a bugbear, did they have the same arguments when writing Hardwired (the song), for example?

They were in a shitty place at the time, so their arguments were meaningless and out of frustration.

As the obvious resident St. Anger extraordinaire. It is pretty apparent that they were trying to sound nu metal under the guise of lets-turn-off-the-snare-wire and be unique and have Kirk sit in a corner and not do solos angle. Yes, they sounded raw, yes, they didn't want to sound like another Load, but at the same time their management must have gotten a word in or to.
I don't know, to me it sounds like they were trying for something along the lines of that. I could be wrong, could just naturally came off that way. As for the songs and the lyrics themselves, it was just a way to vent. Phil "The Sweater Vest" Towele had a hand in that aspect. If I had to name the closest thing to something sounding like a James Hetfield solo album, it's St. Anger.
As for everything else. It just sounds like Frustration ah-ha. Nah, in all seriousness the riffs weren't that great, Lars does some pretty energetic shit, but it's all in his own little world. Kirk is Kirk. I keep forgetting Bob Rock plays bass in it, but nothing shines besides that one little solo part in Some Kind of Monster. It really is kind of stock. EVEN THOUGH...I must say the riffing during the last half of Purify is pretty cool. The "I can find the dirt on everything..." part is badass and makes that song tolerable.

I wonder how long it will be til they look back and regret opening a great album with Hardwired.
The more I hear it the more I think it should have been a B-side, an EP song or something

Maybe it's just me, but I never once thought St. Anger sounded "nu-metal".
It sounded like stoner metal, like Kyuss to be specific.

Hardwired is their best opening track ever. Yes, even better than Battery or Blackened. Hardwired is just flat aggression, and it's the forced aggression of 50-something millionaires living lives of ease and contentment. The 80s albums featured the righteous aggression of pissed-off 20 somethings putting the world to rights, with a nice bit of harmonic sophistication to spice things up as well. Hardwired is lucky in that while it's derivative, it's being derivative of a successful blueprint, but it remains a sort of self-impersonation. A middle-aged guy struggling into those old skinny jeans one more time.

I'm not upset, because I know I'm right But seriously. I really do think that Hardwired is their best opening song. And it's definitely in the my Top 5 all-time Metallica songs. I can't overstate how much I love that song. And to be honest, now it's been about a year and a half since the release of HWTSD, right? I still listen to it almost daily, and haven't listened to any other album as much since its release. I think it might actually be my favorite Metallica album ever.

I don't overthink Hardwired to the point where I question why 50 year old millionaires play with aggression. I just fucking love it.
We all wanted this for years and we got it. Punchy, fast, pissed off. How is that forced but Master of Puppets wasn't? You think they shat out an 8 minute masterpiece?

I think HW gives Spit Out the Bone a run for it's money, but that's just me. I think HW is pretty much forgettable but SPIT is great.

Agreed on Hardwired being an amazing album opening track. I like it, wouldn't say it's amazing, but it works. In and out, bam! Great live in person to get you pumped up for what's to come. Could have used some extension to the "Once upon a planet burning..." Part because that is truly the best part of the song IMO.

idk, 2 years on, HW is still their opener for every show, I think they love it and don't regret it. I don't think it's their best opener, but, definitely not their worst. Solo could have been a bit better and longer.

I'll even say and freely admit how much I LOVE 'That Was Just Your Life' Now I have to yet again (I love that damn documentary!) watch 'SKOM' because the whole stock riff & stock drum beat thing was the beginning of an epic argument.

I still love Hardwired as an opener... seen them live 3 times on this run and I just love the (probably not the right term) slightly off-beat way Hetfield kicks in with "In the name of desperation".
As I said one year and 8 months ago in this thread, it's fast, punchy and aggressive - even with a bit of swearing thrown in for the first time in 13 years. Didn't we all say we wanted that over Death Magnetic's happy bouncy material? When we were singing along about the METALLICA FAM-UH-LEE in 2012 didn't we just want Het to say WE'RE SO FUCKED?!
