Did Metallica credit Dave Mustaine on that handful of songs from the 1st 2 albums because of a sense of fair dues and honour, or because if they had not done so, Dave Mustaine would have had the evidence, like a cassette tape, to prove that his material had been used and was due compensation?
And Mustaine once made a comment about him wondering what Metallica would do when they ran out of his riffs, and there seemed to be an implication in there that Metallica were using a lot more than he was getting credits for. And supposing that is true, it makes it even more interesting as to where the line seems to be drawn between credited and un-credited.

Goddammit, Dave. It's been 35 years.

Dave invented all of music, including the SPIDER CHORD, ok? So all artists should be crediting Dave for every song they have ever made.

.......makes it even more interesting as to where the line seems to be drawn between credited and un-credited. The undefined grey area I've read books about bands that never expected to sell records like they eventually did and made some very casual but expensive decisions about writing credits. Some hold grudges, others take it on the chin with the choice that was made. McCartney and Lennon made the best pact

Changing a riff slightly makes it yours. It's possible they used other Mustaine leftovers that have been altered. It's also possible Mustaine's a jackass.

Goddammit, Dave. It's been 35 years. I realise posts about Mustaine are pretty trite at this stage, but they're usually about things like Mustaine vs. Kirk, or what if Mustaine had stayed in the band somehow. However, the question I posed was more about a technicality just happening to concern Mustaine. If any other early members had credits, or possible credits, owed to them, I'd certainly have included their names as well.

Meh, Metallica have a history of ripping off people. I'm sure their lawyers have been pretty busy over the years dealing out the hush money.

Can you imagine Bowie listening to this new album by some thrash dudes in 1986 and getting to the Andy Warhol part? - "well that was unexpected..... works well but"

I don't know if MetallicA had heard that riff from 'Andy Warhol'... but it's used differently. can I hear the similarities? heck yes... that riif is in MOP. but it's not the main identity of the song. in the song 'Ziggy Stardust' the lyric " like a leper messiah" ended up being the title of a MetallicA song. plus the riff from 'Andy Warhol' being used in MOP. Wait. What is this with Bowie and Metallica???? ^ read what I posted above so cool that David stopped his bus for Rob & Kirk.

I think Mustaine is credited where it's due, and everything else he's stated after the fact is just bitterness. If he had a leg to stand on he'd have gone after them and sued, seeing as there'd be a lot of money in it for him.

James mentioned in the early 90s that he took the Welcome Home riff from somewhere, didn't say where though.

Cheers man will have a read of that bit later Very cool article. Well written too. Kirk's fondness of Bowie's work is pretty clear when reading that. By coincidence I recorded The Hunger off the TV a while back, maybe as far back as when Bowie passed on. Have never sat and watched it but I reckon I'll find some time to have a look now.

I read the article when Kirk wrote it. I had no idea he was a Bowie fan. I just love it when David stops his bus for Rob & Kirk when I found out David had died, I just bawled my eyes out his music had been a part of my life since late 1998 when I started listening to his stuff. I saw him live twice on the Reality tour in 2004, just an amazing live artist. you should watch the movie 'Basquiat', he plays Andy Warhol.
