Let's talk about tr00 kvlt metal.
I've recently finally dipped my toes into Black Metal, finally starting to enjoy a little.
First I started with Bathory. I had gotten on a 80s doom metal kick and I happened to try out Under the Sign of a Black Mark. And I though, you know, this is pretty cool. So I was like, fuck it, never been into Black Metal but let's try some. Blood Fire Death is a pretty good album, their first eponymous album though remains opaque to me for now.
Then I listened to Burzum. The first album was pretty cool but then I tried out Filosofem. That album is what really got me. That and Hvis lyset tar oss really tickle my fancy. I've listed around though and I haven't quite found anything I like as much as those. Varg's voice is just insane on both records and the somber keyboards really add a layer of sophistication that I don't normally hear in Black Metal.
What are some bands that are like Burzum, but not just lame copies? Preferably with less racist members but honestly it's not like I can tell he's racist by those album's lyrics. Anyway yeah. Vocalists that sound as unhinged and insane as varg? Bands with an added layer of sophistication but not so much that it becomes dense and not totally br00tal? Recommendations welcome.

I got over the 'trve' black metal pretty quick. (Emperor is/was tops in that regard though, well beyond the others. Granted, they shed the 'trve' shit really quick and ascended beyond their peers. I can still listen to them. In the Nightside Eclipse, and Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk) Outside of that, Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is a classic.
I'm more into the 'post BM' with it's various names/subgenres. Black gaze, black hole, progressive, avant garde. Namely Blut Aus Nord, and Deathspell Omega. I throw Portal in there too even though people call them death metal. I'd say they sound way more like post BM. Those genres brought some mystery back to BM, as most of them don't reveal themselves, or tour.
When it comes to the popular, untrve stuff, it's really two bands. Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth. I can dig some stuff from both, it's great that they aren't 'trve', I'd rather listen to these band's best material more of the time than the trve kvlt stuff. Somehow boring songwriting and god awful shit production makes BM 'trve' and 'kvlt.' I understand the attitude there, and I felt it for a minute but got over it. There is being interested in the dark arts and it's possibilities, and there is being a dull anti social.
The trve black metal scene is just more conformity against conformity. Not shocking you'd find racism and psychopaths in those scenes.
Ultimately Blut Aus Nord is my fave BM band. Because they do what any of my favorite metal bands do. Over the ends of the spectrum of the best crushing heaviness, as well as melody. Not always on the same record though. They have made the most evil sounding record ever imo, MoRT, and the best, most epic melodic black metal album ever, Memoria Vetusta II.
continued
Have to put this one in here too. It's really not even quite black metal. A beautiful, melancholy record.

Burzum is for sure one of the best "kvlt" BM bands. While his early metal stuff is really great, for me Varg's best material is the synth stuff he recorded while in prison. My absolute favorite track is "Rundtgåing av den transcendentale egenhetens støtte" from Filosofem. It's a 25 minute meditatively repetitive, dark as fuck track. I absolutely adore it.
Apart from early Burzum, I usually like my black metal a bit newer, polished and well-produced, rather than the "cassette demo recorded in a basement" style of early 90s BM. The aforementioned Dimmu and Cradle are for sure my favorites, as is Satyricon, especially their albums Volcano, Now, Diabolical and Satyricon. Then there's Immortal, who were fucking amazing, especially Sons of Northern Darkness. Behemoth is a really fucking great death/black metal band, and I also like stuff like Marduk and Gorgoroth. Ulver used to be a pretty decent black metal band, but completely changed their style later on and are mostly an avant-gardish dark electronic folk group nowadays. They're damn awesome.
And then there's Anaal Nathrakh. Oh dear lord Jesus, Anaal Nathrakh. They are by far the heaviest, most relentless, most furious and crushing metal band I've ever heard. And believe you me, I've listened to a shitload of heavy stuff. They have stated that their purpose is to be the soundtrack to the Apocalypse, and oh my giddy aunt do they ever achieve it! Their music is so filled with hate it almost takes a physical form. Highly recommended!
Burzum - Rundtgåing av den transcendentale egenhetens støtte
Anaal Nathrakh - Depravity Favours the Bold

Its early stuff, but I've always been a fan of Venom. I can appreciate Venom for their pioneer work in the early days... But listening today, their material is pretty fucking shitty. And the newer albums are laughable at best. I saw them live at Tuska Festival in 2006, and good god they were hilarious.

Being from the North East of England, I'm obviously very familiar with Venom.
Their first three albums are classics. Newer stuff isn't bad, but nothing special either.

Watain and Marduk would be a couple of the straight-up black metal bands I enjoy, but like SicJes (shudder) I tend to be more into post-black and black metal hybrids. Apart from Immortal (who are greatly underappreciated due to the hilarity) and Mayhem, I didn't really get into the big 90s names.
So Panopticon, Primordial, Fen, Altar Of Plagues, Ghost Bath, Anagnorisis, Bosse De Nage, Woods Of Ypres, Batushka.
What else... some Dimmu Borgir and Old Man's Child, Satyricon.
Just recently found this band, digging it.

I will be seeing Emperor in July. They are hitting up the stage right before Marilyn Manson at the Heavy Montreal festival. I'm really interested to see the two fan bases interact with each other. Should be entertaining.
I saw Dimmu with Cannibal Corpse a long time ago, and Dimmu was one of the best shows I have ever seen. They sounded beyond perfect.
Rotting Christ put on a great show as well when I saw them open for Cradle back on the Cruelty and the Beast tour.
Emperor should be fun, my wife is in for a shock lol.

Sons of Northern Darkness is such a great album. Immortal gets made fun of quite a bit, because of Abbath's over the top attitude but god damn they wrote some good music.

Yeah, Immortal are legends for sure. Stellar music. Nowadays, Abbath isn't with the group anymore, there was a dirty breakup a couple of years ago. Abbath is now doing his own thing, but his first solo album sounded like... Immortal, really.
As for actual Immortal, they have completed the recording of their new album, and their new singer after Abbath's departure is no other than their original guitarist/lyricist, Demonaz!

Yeah I know, it made me really sad when Abbath left. I'm interested to see what Demonaz comes up with though. It's going to be weird not seeing Abbath with them, the dude is a monster. When I think Immortal, I think of him. This vid sums up everything I love about him, he doesn't take everything so seriously but still kicks serious ass. He will be missed in the band.

I loved that. It's anything but ground-breaking; it's a complete throwback, but in a really good way.

Is there any black metal with clean vocals?

Is there any black metal with clean vocals? I'm sure there's more examples than are springing to mind right now but clean vocals by default mean it's not exactly pure BM. Woods Of Ypres used a mixture of clean and harsh (while they were still kinda BM) e.g. , Similarly, some would probably argue that Primordial weren't really BM by this album: Same with the likes of Ulver and Agalloch I guess.

Thanks, I'll check them out! But Mercyful fate seem to be categorized as an early example of black metal? Or maybe proto-black metal. Kinda looking for that kind I guess.

I guess Primordial is the only BM related band I follow. And only the newer albums that is.
I'm thnking about seeing Behemoth next month. I have seen them live once and I don't consider myself a fan but it should be a fun gig anyway.
I'm a fan of Ihsahn but his music is way broader than BM. Even though I don't listen to them at all, Emperor were great( I know they had few concerts but is there any new music?).
Another band name that I keep reading about is Taake. Honestly I don't know much about them.

Honestly I don't know much about them. Emperor musically quit in 2001 for a reason. Musical differences. They play shows for money. Of course never say never, I just wouldn't hold on to the possibility of new Emperor music. Gotta give it to them to a degree, there is money there in them making new music and yet they don't do it. Musical integrity vs. poor business decisions. I think they look at it as they can never further tarnish their legacy. Just play shows on that legacy and make some money.
