obviously there is an uncomfortable racism aspect to the booing, especially being in hungary at the current moment, but a genuinely big way that lewis hamilton could get away with not being booed is simply by not being a wanker.
like, the gamesmanship and the nonsense is all part of the game and depending on who his rival at the time is i am often quite in favour of it but this is an inevitable side effect of playing those games. especially against a popular driver in max verstappen.
there's form here, fairly or not, with the booing during the rosberg era too when their rivalry was getting a bit heated and the dark arts were at hand.
obviously there is the uncomfortable truth that an outspoken black athlete is more likely going to be targeted by a racist. it's also uncomfortable but a lot of this really falls at the feet of horner, marko, verstappens for the fucking nonsense of the past fortnight and giving the racists, in their minds, a valid reason for all this.
i would love to boo lewis hamilton without it meaning that i am a daft racist or looking like i am participating in the racism. at the same time, with the shenanigans during quali, you can safely say that he's playing the heel too and in the grand drama of sport, he is willing to be the villain. i don't know how we move past this quandary though - another 40 second pre race video and an FIA commission?
points for kimi is my shout and ricciardo is either having his race of the season or will reach his nadir.

Checo running back to the pitlane as if there was a T-car :( in great old times there would have been :'(
when was it there were two team mates that had a running race to reach the T-car? it was either belgium 98 or australia 02. i have visions of sauber and/or renault/benetton drivers having to race?

watching the highlights broadcast and one can't help but think what might've happened (maybe nothing) if russell knew how to put a first lap together. latifi was P6 on merit after lap 1 and spent much of the race in P3. i don't think russell would've bothered vettel and ocon up front but he could've possibly have found himself ahead of gasly come race end (he finishes 16s behind him after a race ran in traffic, it isn't outwith the realms of possibility). he's really going to need to get this sorted if his ambition is to race with hamilton and verstappen on the reg.
also, it looks like seb is going to lose P2 :(

What exactly happened when Russell lifted to let cars pass? Missed that one... i reckon that was race control whispering in his ear to let cars back past after his pitlane passes, maybe? nothing was said outright on the BBC, sky or channel 4 coverage though which is strange. might have been an unofficial warning, if such a thing could be posted.
had he held position ahead of latifi on the first start, things might have been quiet a wee bit different possibly.

Oh, okay, since it was technically a restart there was to be no leapfrogging? I missed a bit of the race, there were cuts to the broadcast feed.

big marcus ericsson literally flew over sebastien bourdais's car at one point in the race yesterday (while under safety car (bringing the grosjean meme into real life)) and then went on to win it. somehow. what a fucking legend.

we're getting colton herta in the F1 sooner or later, hell yeah
i actually thought that it might've been alpha tauri - there's that rumour every few years about red bull wanting to sell, andretti and honda are really close etc - but it is alfa sauber or williams that they are interested in going after. very interesting.
could be a good way to alex rossi back in F1 should he want.
more immediately though, you have to imagine that if andretti can buy a team, they will offer josef newgarden huge money - should they want an american driver. 2 time indycar champion, possibly 3 time by the end of next month, looks to be a genuine world class talent, (some) european experience, easily qualifies for a super licence...who knows.

I would much rather see a new team than a takeover but with that payment upfront they instituted, good luck... oh god yeah, pay like a quarter of a billion dollars in fealty towards zak brown, total bullshit. thing is, this model would totally work for andretti who run their teams out of spec (ish) series, or series that don't require teams to build their entire cars like indycar, GT3 series, formula e etc or who partner up with factories and simply run the race team as they have done, and will do again, in sports car racing. and its fine i suppose but it isn't the formula 1 i particularly like. not that that has truly, and fairly, existed since the 1990s mind. to all their credit, at least HRT designed their car (with dallara) and spent their money on it, same with marussia and caterham. the 2022 regs reduce the difference between cars and teams with regards to design, zak brown wants you to pay him hundreds of millions if you want to start from scratch rather by an existing "franchise" and give a departing team owner a guaranteed nice return on investment (at least with risk free). its just entertainment, existing for itself

delighted to be living in a world in which marcus ericsson, though he's an outside shot, might actually win the indycar series. terrific.
romain grosjean had his oval debut last night. he was more than respectable. ended up a lap down due to a yellow flag falling at a bad time for him during his pit cycle but he was strong, wasn't moving backwards, got into the lower part of the top ten for a while. really good. though i think that esteban guttierez's sadly forgotten and sadly brief indycar dalliance was better - that boy was stunning on an oval.
patricio o'ward now leads the championship. if perez is costing too much or isn't delivering, maybe red bull would be interested in taking him back should the increasingly likely happen and he wins the series. they took kvyat back three times. at the start of the season, zak brown promised pato a test in the F1 car if he could win a race. not sure what the present is if he wins the indycar series but danny ric has got to start finding some pace. not that there are any huge o'ward to F1 rumours swirling but there's an undeniable (and considerably cheaper) colleague in the same team as him that could probably deliver what he has this year.

that thing abody said would happen when they brought in that daft super licence points situation has happened, who could've known?
they wanted, unfairly and unsuccessfully, to keep sergei sirotkin (and others like him) out, instead they are going to lock out talented drivers like colton herta, felix rosenqvist, pretty much any driver from japan so that they could stack the FIA sanctioned feeder series. which have dwindling grids. and are arguably at their least talented (overall) in a good wee while.

I didn't watch the race, any reason why Romain did this oval? One of the less steep or slower ones?

I didn't watch the race, any reason why Romain did this oval? One of the less steep or slower ones? bit of both. the track at st louis is basically flat, in the old IRL days turn 1 was more or less the only corner on the calendar that called for shifting and breaking, it still races a bit like a road course. definitely a good place for a first race when you've never run on an oval before and to get a feel for the discipline.

the murray walker (and so much more) of indycar writing and gambling losses, robin miller, passed away today after a fairly long battle with cancer
his biographical history is staggering - worked on indycar pit crews as a teen (basically winging it), fired from plenty of newspapers, went bust plenty of times, banned from the indianapolis motor speedway, attempted racing driver, friend and council to all, cannonball run participant (essentially running a mobile car bomb) - but his passion and commitment to american open wheel racing is where it's at. he took marcus ericsson to random flat tracks and dirt tracks in the midwest, acted as shop steward for the teams and drivers that didn't have representation, held organisers feet to the fire, had the ear of almost everybody in paddock, friend to all, almost single handedly got indycar back racing at laguna seca and portland and watkins glen and gateway previous to that. so much more. such a dude.
