give carlos sainz jr the title next year, liberty Norris generates more clicks cause geek. i think that of the three english rookies, russell is clearly the money in terms of talent/likelihood of winning a championship but norris and albon have banter in spades
obviously there's the regulation change coming but i'm excited at the prospect of mclaren mercedes being back in 2021

Yeah, Russell is supposedly way above those two. Hopefully with starting the season from scratch at RB Albon can close the qualifying gap to Max. Yeah, let's see for 2021..2020 Hamilton will just run away with the title again, unless he suffers an abrupt drop in pace like it happened to Damon and Mika, but that's almost impossible.

max re-signing with red bull now instead of later in the year is boring because either a) he's boring and doesn't want a fun transfer season later in the year or b) realises that if sainz has another belter of a year and albon, kvyat and gasly all appear to competent enough, max will have lost A LOT of leverage after the drama of 2015 it'd be such BANTZ if red bull signed carlos sainz jr to race for the proper team alongside verstappen Yeah, Russell is supposedly way above those two. Hopefully with starting the season from scratch at RB Albon can close the qualifying gap to Max. Yeah, let's see for 2021..2020 Hamilton will just run away with the title again, unless he suffers an abrupt drop in pace like it happened to Damon and Mika, but that's almost impossible. russell is ace. i think he's already way above ocon and wehrlein after a season in f1. albon will be good, as you say once he bridges the quali gap we'll see how he stands next to verstappen*. i have a soft spot for norris because i met him when he was racing ginetta juniors at knockhill and he seemed nice, after i previously thought he was a wanker based on tv. the three of them all appear to be good hands though and their teams/mercedes in the case of russell seem to have a lot of faith in them. *the big bart prediction of the year is that if lance stroll sorts out qualifying and if racing point get back to how they were the last couple of years as force india, he will beat sergio perez in the championship and be in a season long fight for 7th with sainz and magnussen (2018 not tyre killing 2019 haas not showing up dependent).

what are your thoughts about scott mclaughlin and indycar with penske, ford71V8 ? i heard a rumour that these tests are with something bigger in mind - from a 500 run up to replacing a mclaren-bound simon pagenaud - but i don't know enough about the man himself to know if he has publicly suggested anything about moving stateside. i do know that his supercars season this year was one of the most impressive seasons i have ever seen a driver have! he was so great.

Been following Scotty for a few years now and was very happy to see him chosen to pilot the famous #17 (Dick Johnson Racing, Dick used number 17 all through the 80s and 90s). And yes he has been outstanding, breaking records and total domination.
With that excitement comes the knowledge that it will be short lived. He has always had aspirations to head to the US - joining DJR/Penske has given him that avenue and with his performance over here it was only a matter of time til he put a toe in the water over there whether it be Indy or NASCAR. So, no, no suprises about where this is heading. On top of that he has just married his longtime gf who is American, so its a no brainer that Scotty will be racing there before too long. He definitely has the abilities! My guess is 2020 will be his final year in Australia, meaning the good times here with him in a Ford will soon be over. Will be following his career regardless of what/where he ends up driving.
EDIT Just saw this article posted up this morning. Gives a good explanation of why Indy test was chosen over NASCAR path

thank you for that! i didn't realise that he was married to an american as well. it's really interesting to hear that it has always been his ambition. i can imagine dick johnson would probably give his blessings for trying america too, given his history there too?
i know it was just a test and it was for penske of all teams but he is fast in an indycar, as in, he is at least fernando alonso fast in an indycar. correct me if i am wrong but hasn't he only done a couple of open wheel races since karts (literally 2 or 3 rounds of formula ford) which makes it even more impressive!
that article was interesting, i had'nt heard anything about him racing in indycar this year - let alone the second round of the championship! he's been to CoTA before at least so there's some track knowledge but this happening very fast. will power has been hyping him for sometime and obviously tim cindric knows a star when he sees one.
is there any hint of giz maybe thinking of coming to europe or the usa too? he seems to enjoy his sportscar racing but i amn't sure if he has a budget, or connections, to run a full prototype season. on that note, were you at the asian le mans series race at the bend the other weekend?

His wedding only happened recently, during off season break, but yes apparently long term partner. The Penske link is absolutely huge isnt it! Opens up a whole world. You seem to have a good handle on some of the history of our Aussie drivers, and yes with Dick once upon a time trying to impress in the States he will be behind Scotty 100%. I would say most Aussie motorsport fans would like to see "one of our drivers" (remembering Scotty is actually from NZ) head over and make some impact in the US scene....apart from the selfish part of wanting him to stay put and keep winning everything. Jamie Whincup gets sometimes criticized for having ability and the links to try something overseas but stayed here instead to won 7 C'ships.
Yeah that article had a few new bits of info for me - certainly the most up to date info I have read, regarding opportunities in 2020. Open-wheel option was not the one I expected due to his racing history. Hasn't been in karts since he was a kid and before trying out the Indy car the only other experience I know about is a session in an Indycar simulator (which of course are very real these days, but still!)...so to be a second away from the top times of the day is exciting. I met Scotty a couple of years ago. My son forced the issue because he wanted his shirt signed, and the wait was in 40deg sun. We ended up front of the line and he (and teammate Fabian) gave us a heap of time for a chat and signed our stuff. I took the opportunity to snap a photo of my son with the 2 drivers, Scotty is the only one looking at the camera properly - so he is also a good polite boy
Giz has been doing a bit of non-V8SC racing, like the Asian LeMans gig on the weekend, but the all seem to be one offs. He has always been one to try out different series, an important part of his contract is to allow him to travel and drive different machinery and circuits. But he also has a good gig here, still driving for one of the 2 top teams....unfinished business is what keeps him here fulltime I would say....he has a championship now but yet to win at Bathurst (and so so close twice now). The Asian LeMans weekend held last weekend was circled on my calendar - the track is only a bit over an hour from my place so have been a visitor for a few events already - but too much going on at home right now so had to abandon plans. They did show the 4 hour race on Fox live so caught a lot of it anyway. (Again Giz and team-mates robbed of a result in final stages!)

very interesting! so an american wife and driving for penske, right enough both would open america up to him! thank you - i just enjoy motorsports and i think australia and japan are two of the more interesting places and cultures for it. the old ToCA games really helped with that, plus an uncle who would also tape supercars for me when i asked him to tape cart/indycar, moto gp and the nhl for me! dick johnson was someone i really enjoyed learning about. he seems almost like a folk hero with his background and constantly having to prove himself to everybody - then his career almost ending at the mountain when he wrecked and then being inundated with donations from fans. what a guy.
i saw that scott mclaughlin did the iracing dayonta 24 hours, competing in the GTE class (and finishing 5th), maybe getting a practice for next year alongisde helio castroneves and juan pablo montoya for penske his branching out is nice to see from a driver. while you can't deny the talent of folk like jamie winchup (i'll get to him later), jimmie johnson, lewis hamilton etc the folk who go out and race multiple formulae get mad respect from me for doing that. some of the indycar drivers doing the rolex is nice but andre lotterer, some years, going from single seaters to gt/touring cars to prototypes is well cooler; alex lynn has driven almost everything the past few years. sorry for the digression: i'm glad that penske is giving scott these opportunities. i'd love to maybe see him have a go in one a stock car too. the story of you meeting him is so sweet! i'm glad that you and your son got to meet him and that he was nice and attentive! especially after you waited in that heat too!
as for fabian, how is he regarded? he came to me from wrecking at the start of the 1000 a few years ago (and wrecking a lot more since...) and for being david coulthard's cousin. i saw that he finished 4th in the championship this year and always seemed like a good hand but not much else.
jamie winchup! i mentioned him earlier too but he reminds me of jimmie johnson in nascar: had almost a full decade of unprecedented success and can easily be considered one of the all time greats and yet he doesn't seem to be regarded so. i realise supercars is absolutely the top touring car series in the world but what i'd have given to see him race a ngtc or s2000 touring car in britain or argentina or in the world championship. a totally different beast - very skittish and low on downforce, almost rally car like - but i think he'd have fun and enjoy the challenge (plus boost his rep globally). i imagine however that triple 8 in supercars probably would've paid him more than triple 8 in british touring cars.
thanks for the giz update! i applaud him wanting to do more but like you say, he's got the day job to focus on. i think giz would love the british touring style - i remember him bringing it to bernd schneider and mika salo (what a combination) in a mclaren at bathurst a few years back - hard driving, a bit/a lot of contact, super competitive. gt300 in japan would also have giz's name all over it!
sorry for the wall of text here's said clip of giz:

I am very familiar with the ending to the 2014 12hour, was riveting ! You do realise this years event is on in a weeks time. I cant wait. We even considered heading over for this one but lots happening with the family etc at the moment. (oh by the way, I attended the 2018 Bathurst1000 race - jealous?! - it was amazing watching from the top)
A couple of comments to your post:
Cheers for explaining how you are familiar with our racing and drivers - thanks Uncle!. I used those early TOCA video games to introduce my son to car-racing and certain tracks. It worked haha. I just bought him the latest Gran turismo for Xmas mainly because it has a very impressive looking Bathurst track.
I recall the Dick Johnson incident when he hit the Rock, I was very young but was watching with my dad when it happened and was really intrigued with the public offerings of money to get him back up and running.....dad refused to donate which annoyed me but typical
There have been Jamie Whincup / Jimmie Johnson comparisons here over the last number of years too. You can't deny the skills. And you don't win that many championships by simple luck and a good car. Yes, you need a strong team and a budget but this sport chews up anyone that doesn't have the mongrel in them.
Fabian Coulthard. Bit of a mixed bag when it comes to opinion.
Of course, he can drive. You don't end up in a Penske car if they are unsure of your ability.
For me, his attitude is a little too blasé. Too casual when things go wrong like he has a lifetime of chances to get it right. I think he's had his share of brainfarts too over the years.
Its not an easy gig to be Scotty McLaughlins teammate - he shows them all up! 4th in the championship is great, but he is in one of the 2 top teams so anything much below I would consider a fail. Was good enough for DJR/Penske to take the Teams C'ship also last year, which will give the team the number #1 pitbox on pitlane which has a few advantages for the coming season (one of them being the brag factor)
Will be interesting to see how he performs when Scott moves on. The incident you are referring to its almost certainly the huge rollover at Bathurst in 2010. From memory it was a wheel to wheel contact when leaving startline, which busted the air valve, deflating the tyre and leaving him to deal with the 300kmh Conrod straight and the Chase. Crazy stuff!

oh, it was such a great race wasn't it? it was the first non-1000 race i 've seen there (save for a formula 3 support race i watched - i'm still in awe at that). i think the team of john bowe, craig lowndes and mika salo was what intrigued me the most! awesome race. ah it's next weekend innit? i knew it was close because the rolex 24 was this weekend past - chaz mostert class winner in gtlm for bmw - and they're usually close together. excited! i'm sorry that you cannot go and i hope that all is well with you and your family!
i am extremely jealous! i think i stayed up to watch it actually. there's been a lot of great races at the mountain this decade i hope this decade lives up to it! i see also a 500km touring car race has been announced for april, i think? i don't know if that is in place of the 6 hour production race or not.
between you and my uncle, your son and i had good guides! i haven't played gt sport yet but i'm glad that they do the mountain a service. i think it was ToCA world touring cars that i first encountered that track, maybe?
that's an excellent "dad" story about the rock incident - suspect most of my family would've been the same. of course it was...simpler/less corporate back then but the idea of that happening nowadays is so low. that seemingly instant making of a star and folk hero.
that seems to be what i have heard/been able to tell about fabian coulthard, thank you. it strikes me that if roger penske/tim cindric were running things day to day he'd maybe be out or on his last warning (and he may well be), after all it took simon pagenaud winning the indy 500 and finishing 2nd to newgarden in the championship to keep his job, just! i do like him though: he has this journeyman quality to him and, before it inevitably goes wrong, you root for him! that is indeed the crash! has to be one of the worst places to have a delamination surely? thankfully there is acres of, albeit gravel, run-off at the chase! i think i have seen fabian coulthard race actually. i didn't realise that he was lewis hamilton's team mate in the 2002 formula renault championship until he mentioned it in a video; lewis hamilton was definitely at the knockhill meeting but i don't know if fabian was.
i met david leslie at that same meeting. similarly to your son and scotty, he looked at the camera while i was staring off (ironically, into the poster of himself that he had just signed )

Well well well, I did not know this! Of course I had to go and quickly check and sure enough Fabs is listed right there with Lewis. So glad you put that out there - I had no idea
Going to the actual track was a real treat - I wont lie, I got excited like a schoolgirl when the Mount Panorama signage on the mountain came into view as we drove towards the circuit I'd always wanted to attend but the weekend is already a big deal to me even at home, setting up the TVs and flags etc. trying to make my place feel like we are there haha. The race was not the most exciting one but will be remembered for the previous years winner (David Reynolds) struggling with cramps and fatigue surrendering the lead to Craig Lowndes who went on to win in his last appearance there as a fulltime driver.....seriously the whole place was behind him, the cheering that swept over the whole place was crazy and all he needed to do was pull his car up at pitexit
While it would be amazing to attend the Bathurst 12hr this weekend, I'm not so sure it would be as enjoyable as the October visit. Weather forecast looks brutal - if correct, they will be qualifying in 39C heat.....they will be earning their pay this weekend, raceday forecast is 37C with rain and possible storms. Thats a tough weekend. Will be concern for fires too, with weather like that. Not too long to go now, I am super keen for Saturday arvo when the telecast begins.
Bathurst 6hr remains. What you have probably heard is the announcement for a new race weekend up there called the Bathurst International (will be held in December I believe). We have a couple of new series startups as of 2019 and they will be the main part of this event, the pinnacle being a 500km enduro for our TCR series....Will Brown won last years inaugural season, watch for him....he's young, super quick in different machinery and just scored a nice contract with Erebus team in V8Supercars....I can see him going places.

just seen that tony kanaan has announced his retirement at the end of the year. running the five oval races in indycar this year as somewhat of a farewell. it's sad to see him go. i think scott dixon will be the last full time driver who was there for the days of cart.

i didn't know this until the other day either! as i say, i'm sure he ran the full season in 2003 but i think he was only partial in 2002. i don't think i saw formula renaults in 2003, or if they even came to knockhill! one thing that was nice about growing up here, until around 2010 or so, was getting to see so many future stars in formula ford, renault and 3, as well as in porsche cup and of course the british touring car championship. formlua renault in 2002 was stacked - lewis hamilton and fabs ran races, as did: jamie green, will davison*, patrick long, james rossiter, ej viso, danny watts, katherine legge... now that everything is more homogenised** and continental based, and open-wheel grids are so low, you see less future big names! (seeing lando norris and colton herta a few years back was cool however)
aw that's well cool though!! it must've been great to see lowndes win on his final run in the 1000, even as a ford man i like your commitment to bringing the mountain to your home and going there would be like a dream! where were you based at the track or did you wander around throughout the race? aye this year looks insane. i saw the temperatures are way back up again: i heard that they expect the race to be unaffcted by the fires but that you can see evidence of them by the track. it'll be a proper endurace race for everybody, and every car, involved! i quite fancy the #35 nissan for the race: tsugio matsuda is a legend and katsumasa chiyo is always exciting at the mountain, whether he wins it or bins it. the #34 BMW i am sort of rooting for, if only to see chaz mostert and augusto farfus win two long distance races in different hemispheres 6 days apart
i must admit, i think i skimmed the article over on touringcartimes but that sounds cool. i saw that australia has really embraced TCR, i think surprising even the organisers and folk running the formula. i've heard that name around so i will definitely keep a look out for him. how has s5000 been going? i saw it started with fanfare, but a small grid, last year but haven't heard much since. certainly hoping that it does well because i like unique and local series - and if they can reguarly attract known names like rubens barrichello more regularly, even better!
*i am a big fan of will davison - i suspect through the toca games and that connection leading me to learn about dick johnson! his brother, james, is always a highlight at indianapolis even if he usually ends up in the wall. he's a real talent for ovals and open wheel cars.
**to what i was saying about tcr and s5000 - i am so bored of seeing every formula 3 and gt3 series going around paul ricard, spa francorchamps, silverstone etc. i know there is probably reasons due to safety or licences etc but i miss seeing such formula at places like croft or thruxton or mondello park. national racing here is the british touring car championship and british gt (which has rounds in belgium and sometimes france, germany), the former goes to those out of the way places at least. our tcr championship had to get merged with the previous gen touring car division due to small grids and the diversity of tracks went away. let alone having our own series endurace series!

We drove from home (adelaide) to Bathurst in a motorhome and camped close by to Conrod straight. Was a crazy bunch of nights with chaos and fireworks going off everywhere each night (Illegal to bring in but they still get them in). We spent a lot of the Friday up to the top of the mountain but I had bought granstands seats on pit straight - we were directly opposite the Ford garage of Chaz and Winterbottom....close to pit exit end. So many great spots but that gave us a definite bigscreen and a good view of what was happening in pitlane all weekend.
Yeah, #35 was the first big out for the 12hr. What a shame. The other GTR looked strong too. The didn't show it on the telecast but I heard #34 (Mostert) hit a kangaroo during a Safety car period which started their problems. You would have seen Mostert was unwell too, so not ideal.
S5000 had a slow start with only a few outings and small grids. Bit of a toe in the water exercise but I expect things to ramp up in 2020. They are increasing grid sizes and I hope things start taking off for the series. They've got a support slot at Australian Grand Prix coming up, pretty sure with the TCRs too.

So many great spots but that gave us a definite bigscreen and a good view of what was happening in pitlane all weekend.

haha, my girlfriend's cousin's husband is from perth (wa) and when we went to a family gathering at new year he revealed that he spent all of his money on fireworks because it is illegal to buy them in wa and he wanted to see fireworks before they headed back that sounds class though. i had heard that bathurst was crazy like nurburgring, sebring or le mans so i'm glad that it lives up to that reputation! it sounds like you got a good spot and like you've said, the atmosphere there of seeing lowndes win would be ace.
re the #35, i saw the kcmg team have stopped supporting nissan and moved to porsches for gt3. i don't think it was related to this weekend past but it leaves nissan outside of gt3. do they still have their supercars programme or did that collapse too? they've pulled out of imsa's protoype category as well and with a greatly reduced gt3 programme, i can only think of them running in super gt and formula e now.
thakn you for the update! s5000 had a lot of hype, certainly from the racer writers, as being almost an australian indycar equivalent. i hope it succeeds - maybe in a few years we can revive the tasman series! tcr + s2000, as well as supercars, on the australian grand prix support is a strong weekend of racing.

Bathurst was crazy but its well understood these are mild times. A decade back and further, it was not a place to take your family haha.... you might even lose the car you drove in as the ferals at the top had a tendency to set fire to cars and your tent!
Unfortunately 2019 was the final year for Nissan. Factory support was pulled a few years earlier (I think they did 7 full seasons all up). Kelly Racing are moving to Mustangs for 2020. There was talk that the Nissans would be used in the 2nd tier series (Super2) but an announcement only today confirmed this will not eventuate and the cars will be put up for sale.
Yeah, S5000 series is going to be interesting to see how it evolves. Fingers crossed it has a successful weekend supporting F1. And I've thought the same thing mate - TCR, S5000, V8SC, F1 - I know I'll be kicking myself for not attending but gotta deal with not being able to do and see everything.....Adelaide500 is only a fortnight away, so I'll be trackside for that which is always huge being Round 1 of the season . When Melbourne weekend rolls around I'll probably be happy to be in the lounge rather than another weekend in the sun and crowds.

eh, so i don't think this season will be starting for a wee whilie now
but when it does the big barty bet is that sergio perez will win a race this year and lance stroll will contend for a podium on 3-4 occasions

Good that DAS is already banned for 2021, I can't see how changing toe-in during driving is consistent with F1's take on parc fermee car alterations.

Good that DAS is already banned for 2021, I can't see how changing toe-in during driving is consistent with F1's take on parc fermee car alterations. lance stroll would be a phenomenal endurance driver or even touring car driver, given how mad touring car races often are, but yeah his poor qualifying/lack of one-lap speed is holding him back. qualifying 4th and starting 2nd at monza the other year, even with a merc in the back, is a sign that he can find that pace. it does seem to be an issue that has followed his career though, so its crucial that this year - when the force india looks like a rocket - he improves soon.
hahaha i love that. you can't touch the car after qualifying unless your car can do it on track. it's a snazzy development but it's for the best i think that we'll have it for the one year only. they can change the parc fermee rules too if they want tbh.

Is the Formula 1 series on Netflix any good or is it a bunch of melodrama?

Is the Formula 1 series on Netflix any good or is it a bunch of melodrama? Season 1 was quite good, very entertaining. Gunther Steiner is a star.

Good series Lots of interesting behind the scenes stuff (more interesting than the racing of recent times)

content not to learn from last time they had a circuit with relatively steep banking and ralf schumacher repeatedly wrecking himself on it, it appears that that 14 degree banking aat zandvoort might not be the safest...
the complete lack of catch fence on the last corner might be something the FIA want to look into immediately what with the race being set to be run in 7 or so weeks
