Ok look. It's a good song. And it's popular. But is it really THAT popular?
I get why they always play Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, Master of Puppets, One and all that. Seek is a questionable one, but that song gets the crowd going like nothing else so I can kind of get that too. But Sad But True?
The Black Album is obviously their big hit, but if you go by popularity, The Unforgiven is a bigger song. It has way more views on YouTube. It has way more plays on Spotify. But they're not playing The Unforgiven every night.
Maybe they like it because it's heavy. Okay, that's fair. Why not just have a "heavy slot" then? Switch it out with Thingy, or heck, Devil's Dance every now and then. Something like that. Just mix it up.
If they want another song like Seek that involves the crowd, freaking throw in My Friend of Misery or something. I'm honestly surprised they basically scrapped it after the Black Album anniversary thing. That song was such a great success live.
There's no reason for them to always play Sad But True. Are the casual fans going to be that mad if they don't play it? I really don't think so.

Sad but true gets the crowd involved, none of the other slow heavy songs does that. But I agree, would love a heavy slot rotation

That middle section with the crowd singing is awesome.

Its great live in person, 99% of the crowd is banging along and shouting HEY! And, "You know it's sad but true!"
I'm sick to death of it elsewhere, but when I'm at the show, it's a great song. (Unless you're way far from the action, then yeah, its still boring.)

It's also a simple, easy to play song. I think it's used as a breather.

Sad but true gets the crowd involved, none of the other slow heavy songs does that. But I agree, would love a heavy slot rotation They need to lose Sad and replace it with Dream no More

It’s honestly one of the highlights of the set in person in my opinion. Never gets old (in person), the crowd love that slow groove and it always sounds heavy as hell.
One on the other hand should absolutely be dropped because it sounds like crap, and Seek wouldn’t be missed at all by anyone if it was never played again.
+ 1 for more My Friend of Misery, that was so good live in Melbourne back in 2013.

Was awesome in Denmark too, I wouldn't mind them bringing it back into rotation.

I had no clue this was from last year and I was about to re-write both of my old posts basically.
I cannot believe MFOM has still not made it into more than one non-TBA anniversary show. As someone said before, success is probably the best way to put how that song landed live. I'd go as far as saying in Metallica's current form, it's in their top live songs.
