www.soundonsound.com/techniques/inside-track-metallica-moth-flameSorry if this was posted before, but if it has been, it deserves another one. This is by far one of the best articles I've read about Metallica ever! It delves into the geeky techy stuff behind the album in so much depth it's incredible. And the title is also very deceiving, as it has little to do with Moth specifically. For the less tech-interested folk, it more or less confirms that the band is having/had huge issues with Kirk's attendance and contributions and demeanor, and also that LOS was cut from the album after mixing which is why the album is two CDs that could theoretically fit on one.

Awesome interview, quite the read and very eye opening.

I'm just starting but wow at some of those tidbits. Kirk didn't contribute for reasons unknown and Greg doesn't really want to go into it. They tried getting an album going in 2011 with Rick Rubin but it went nowhere. It's really interesting because this is stuff we could reasonably guess at (Lars I believe mentioned doing stuff with Rick at some point but nothing like this) but was never going to be said out loud by the band.
Also thought it's pretty amusing that apparently they explicitly tried for a more progressive direction in AJFA. I've always thought Justice was the odd man out of their catalog, it never felt like a natural continuation from Puppets despite what everyone says. I guess that's confirmation it's not just me who thinks it's a different breed from the rest.

I still remember them talking about recording their Ecstasy cover without Kirk and just that was awkward.

James did his best Kirk impression and in the process surpassed the original. I'm pretty sure even Kirk would agree that solo has too much wah on it.

Maybe kirkadon is working on a solo album, it's the only thing that explains his lack of contribution imo.

“Kirk spends a lot of his time in Hawaii, and with James and Lars both living in Marin County [just north of San Francisco], and Rob in LA, it was the hardest for Kirk to come to the sessions. He didn’t contribute to the writing of this album, but delving into what went on was not a good use of the airtime I had with these guys. In general, producing Metallica is pretty unique compared to the other bands I’ve worked with. You’re dealing with pretty big personalities, and the trick was to avoid confrontations that weren’t productive, and try to force confrontations that were."
This basically confirms a fall out, or at least tension...which is what a lot of you have speculated from MOT videos and shows

It's interesting, they either kind of ignore what Kirk says or you can see a bit of Lars or James kind of talking to Kirk almost like they are babying him.
