I low key bang it too. I don't really even listen to any Latin pop genres.
This video has 3 billion + views since Jan. 07. It got like 30m views in the past 24 hrs. It's the most streamed song overall of the streaming era, and the fastest gainer.
Now taking bets on how far it will go before it dies down...
I say it will double what it has now before the year is over, and will relatively 'die down' next year.

This sounds like every song my wife listens to.
Good for dancing, she loves them.
After a few of these songs in a row they start to blend together though. But I think that's the point.

Reggaeton beat. It's like trance or dubstep. Same beat every time.

I think those numbers are a scam. People be wheeling and dealing behind the scenes for advertising and promotion while YouTube etc manipulate the totals getting people to talk about it and promote it more. Like come on, that song is shit. Who are these billions of people Listening to this on repeat 24\7?
There are 7 billion people on earth, think about that for a second.

There might be some trickery behind some of it. But, that would be some ignoring of the fact that Latin pop is the most internationally popular music there is. Otherwise, the US corporate machine, where all the money is supposed to be, would have the biggest hits. And they actually don't. This isn't the only Latin pop song that is really huge. Lots of them get huge numbers. Other than Latin America; southern Europe, the Arab world, India and some of Asia are big into Latin pop. That's billions of people. Enrique Iglesias and Shakira are some of the most beloved people on the planet.
We are insulated in the anglo West, in thinking that the planet only loves our shit and that it's 'the biggest.' That isn't the case.
*Youtube views are counted by separate views. That video hasn't been watched by 3 billion people. It's been watched a handful of times by 100s of millions of people.

I'd never ever heard of it until I met my wife. They listen to this music all of the time. While cooking, cleaning, washing clothes. It's pretty much music from when they wake up until when they go to bed. Quite relaxing honestly.

Well, legit or not, I do not understand this kind of music. If it is on the radio while I'm at a coffee shop or something, sure why not. But I would never reach out for it, let alone multiple times a day for x amount of days.
Not trying to discredit it or anything, I just honestly have never been able to connect with this type of music, or other IMHO "generic" recycled all sounds the same stuff.
And it's not a "metal" thing. I love my metal and connect with metal music more then most other genre's, but I can say that , like all music, 97% of it is pretty shit and I don't connect with it either.
I just wish to that if these numbers are true, it would be for something more meaningful then some whipped together in a few hours pop song.
NASA releases some earth shattering news and gets like 2000 views, you know lol.
If cancer was cured tomorrow, you think the news would get those views?
Kind of sad really.
Wind of Change deserves 3 billion views lol

Wind of Change deserves 3 billion views lol I agree, but then again music is a positive thing so it could be worse. If it brings happiness to someones life I can't argue with it. I'm with you though, it does nothing for me personally. It's really just background music and that's how it's used for the most part. It's just music to get wasted and dance to. With the way the world is right now, it certainly could use more people getting together and dancing. So who am I to judge?

I think the difference is much of the world is in fact kind of simple and 'generic' about music. They either want to dance to it, or have a simple ballad, or something traditional to their country. The American and British music industries were always big on trying to sell some new thing, always, to keep business booming. Now, in the age of info, music gets around, and the world outside of the English focused world can gravitate to what genres it can most relate to right now, and therefore, now, the Latin pop business is booming.
I can only imagine that most of the world think the anglo west are a bunch of freaks for what we listen to. And, they're right!
Point being, parts of the world are decades behind in growing a bigger palette of taste.

Oh, and despite all I said about non-US/western markets, Despacito has been No.1 on the US Billboard for the past 13 weeks. Therefore No.1 song in the US for the year, and it's poised to break all time No.1 records. It has also been No.1 in Europe for 14 weeks.
Scratch your head harder. ;)
This is also reminding me that I don't get out much lately.

I knew how popular the song was, but fortunately I have only been subjected to it once.

I haven't heard it once from start to finish, just bits and pieces here and there. It sounds like every other latin-influence pop song ever. Nothing too offensive, but not exactly something I'd enjoy listening to.

Heh, came across this song and it might as well be the same damn song! Came out a few years ago. In some genres it's very acceptable to rip each other off all day long. In others you'd probably be taken to court.

I hate that song, eventhough i like salsa dancing and reggeaton a lot but this despacito is all over and I don't understand why people are so hooked to it
Reminds me when gangnam style was a hit few years back and everyone got obsessed about it

Despacito is basically the perfect song of it's type, despite it being every Latin pop/reggaeton crossover ever. It's just one that finally got it completely right. (video is lowkey perfect for it too) Without breaking it all down, I totally see why it's as big as it is.
