TDTNC is a turd.
My alternative thought: The Unforgiven III is the best Unforgiven.

TDTNC is a turd. My alternative thought: The Unforgiven III is the best Unforgiven. Agreed on TDTNC, fecking terrible. Unforgiven 2 is my favourite of the three. On that note, I really do not like DM. I'll be surprised if I ever listen to it again. Shelved with St Angry.

The Day That Never Comes > The Unforgiven 3 > Enter Sandman > The Unforgiven 2
All are songs I like and enjoy.

Enter Sandman is a masterpiece. How is that an alternative thought, exactly? Other than being rather overplayed, I rarely hear negative things about Sandy.

I've seen often that people don't like Attitude. I dig it. True. And Prince Charming. Actually two of my favorite tracks from Load/Reload.

The problem with TDTNC and UN3 is their execution. I only appreciated their great melodies after listening to the youtube covers on piano/violin/cellos etc. Weak vocals, thin guitars, terrible production, lack of atmosphere really strip those songs from everything. Oh and the "love is 4 letter word/this I swear" part is awful.

DM needed better overall production. Bold hot take right here. I was responding to the previous post. Some would just say it needed to 'sound' better. Most all the instruments (and vocals) needed performance production. 2 different things. Hence, 'overall production.'

DM needed Bob Fucking Rock, not that lazy piece of crap. St. Anger didn't need Bob Rock. DM and HTSD needed Andy Sneap.

Rock produced the best sounding Metallica albums in their whole catalogue with one exception, which was intensional. St Anger needed Bob the most on a whole other level so I'll let some crappy choices slide.
If DM had that 90s crushing metallica sound, it would be hard to top.

Rock produced the best sounding Metallica albums in their whole catalogue with one exception, which was intensional. St Anger needed Bob the most on a whole other level so I'll let some crappy choices slide. If DM had that 90s crushing metallica sound, it would be hard to top. Yes, he did. Their best studio sound was between Black and Garage Inc. Flawless productions. St. Anger, though intentional, was a really bad job. Lots of pro-tools and copy paste, that resulted in a really sterile and uninspired sounding album. The poor delivery from the band also didn't help. The intent was a garage sound, but it failed. That's not a garage sound, that's just a bad sound. If they went for something dirty, like some Melvins albums, that are intentionally dirty, but still very heavy... That might have worked better. But the songs are beyond redemption, even with a better production job. So, it is what it is... As for DM: i can't stand the album, so i can't agree with it being hard to top, even in their prime. The songwriting is weak and uninspired, in my opinion. Better than St. Anger, sure, but still pretty weak for Metallica's standards. It's just all over the place, riffs after riffs that don't go anywhere, weird vocal patterns, cringy lyrics, and the songs sound rushed and sloppy. However, if, as you said, it was recorded with Metallica's early 90's sound, Hetfield's voice and all... It would have been MUCH better. But that's a hard exercise, because DM's songs wouldn't fly with their standards in the early 90's. With a third of those riffs, they would have made a great album with different lyrics and a totally different feel. And much better solos. But, for the sake of argument: if the songs were exactly the same, but with their Black Album era sound and vocals, it would have been decent. But not great. Not even in their prime, could they make such an unfocused album sound great.

DM, besides a few cringe lyrics, is Ace IMO. I listened to that CD, and mostly only that CD, for a good 4-5 years nonstop after its release. I love that album. Was waiting like 16 years for that kind of Metallica album. Still makes me grin like a kid when I listen to it.

Agreed, its an amazing album. Besides, bad lyrics can be found on every single Metallica album so that's a silly thing to judge Dm by. Just with HW production Dm would have been a top effort in my book.
+ Andy Sneap is as hit and miss as the next guy

Thorn Within is Metallica's most underrated song, yes, it's better than Outlaw Torn.

I mean it just has the similar progression, at least to me. I might be out of my gord, but I listened to the two songs the other night and the first like 2 minutes sounded pretty similar, like they kind of took some chords from it. I don't know maaaaaaannn!
