The rumour is that the new series isn't as good as the original episodes. Why would there be rumours about a new series that's already mostly aired? The new series has had overwhelmingly positive critical feedback. Fan reaction varied between those who want it to be more like season 1 and 2 and Lynch fans who are just rolling with whatever he throws at us, but right now I'd say it's mostly very positive. Episode 17 was so very satisfying.
Episode 18 left me feeling physically ill, mentally distraught, and goddamn angry at everything. Fuck life, the universe and everything... And fuck David Lynch in particular.

Loved the ending. I felt confused, full and empty at the same time when it immediately finished, much like the season 2 ending. But unlike the season 2 ending there's a lot to dig into so I haven't stopped thinking about it and reading theories; more like Mulholland Drive in that regard. I knew we wouldn't get a nice neat conclusion and resolution, Lynch has talked many times about that being the antithesis of art, but I feel like episode 17 tied up most of the important threads of The Return. And then we got Lynch mindfucked.
