Just watched the two-hour premiere of Twin Peaks Season 3.
WOW.
That was some of the lynchiest lynch that Lynch has ever lynched. It was definitely not meant for mainstream TV audiences, and at times it was the most terrifying thing I have ever seen on screen. Some of the scarier, lynchier imagery was fucking sick. So completely out there. Final proof that Lynch is literally insane. And I loved every second of it!
Yes, there are returning characters and some returning themes... But I dare say that none of it makes any sense to even the most hardcore Twin Peaks fan. It's so intriguingly messed up that you just stare at it blankly, understanding nothing, yet you can't wait to see more.
And yes, this is Lynch definitely abusing the audience. In all the worst imaginable ways.

Watched the first 2 episodes and loved them. Pure fucking distilled, unhinged Lynch. He gives no fucks about what people want or what might be palatable for a modern TV audience, I've never seen anything like it on TV.

If you checked Netflix I'm sure you'd find the answer.
I vaguely remember watching the first season and thinking it was awesome and then the second season was terrible.
Kinda like Heroes in that regard.

The first 20 minutes of it are the most spine-rattlingly horrifying stuff I've ever seen in my life. Lynch is so fucking insane it's downright evil.

Yeah the first half of episode 3 is absolutely mental. The kind of atmosphere Lynch creates is infinitely more unsettling than 99.9% of horror. Also episode 4 was hilarious, practically right back to season 1 and 2 in tone. I'm liking the mix of old and new, I just hope we don't have to wait too long for Coop to properly come back

So I think that he will be back next episode.

I'm a fan of David Lynch's films (Mullholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Elephant Man) but haven't watched the Twin Peaks series. Seriously tempted to get the TP boxset, it's only about £12 on Amazon. Does TP stand up to his best films? I have watched Fire Walk With Me btw and i thought it was decent.

Does TP stand up to his best films? I have watched Fire Walk With Me btw and i thought it was decent. The best moments of Twin Peaks stand up to his best films. But given that it's 2 seasons long, it's less consistent. It's also different given that its largely imitating the cheesy soap operas of the era like Dallas but with Lynchian weirdness and quirks throughout. You'll either embrace the early 90's style and find it charming, or hate it, but it's always very self aware. Season 1 is great, and half of season 2 is great. Then Lynch essentially quit the show as the network forced him to solve the mystery. and the back half of season 2 is a drag. He came back for the finale which is one of the best episodes. Season 3 however (just started 25 years later) is completely and utterly David Lynch. You can tell he has got no network notes or restrictions, they've just gave him a bag of money and said "Do what you want". So it's a bit different to the first 2 in that it's pure fucking Lynch just like his best films, and so far it's been (imo) some of his best work. It's some of the weirdest stuff he's done, and a lot of it reminds me of Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead. But you really need to watch the whole thing to have a hope of understanding it. Somebody explain Twin Peaks to me and why I should watch it. David Lynch. Either you love him or hate him. It's basically one of those shows that the industry heralds as changing television, just cos of how ballsy and different it was. You have a nation watching a charming soap opera about a murder mystery in a small American town and then all of a sudden they're in an alternate dimension with a dancing dwarf and a Giant talking backwards.

So the premise is an investigation of a murder in a small town but there's some weird shit going on in this small town?

So the premise is an investigation of a murder in a small town but there's some weird shit going on in this small town? Yeah pretty much. But when it gets weird it can get really weird, enough to make you go "What in the actual fuck is going on and how did this air on ABC in 1990". I think the thing modern audiences will struggle to get over isn't the weirdness it's the general cheesy soap opera vibe to everything from the acting to the music (which is intentional; none of his other work is like that). I love it, but its an acquired taste nowadays; you'll probably know if it's for you within the first 3 episodes or so.

Why would you watch the story stuffed into 6 minutes before watching the actual show?

Why would you watch the story stuffed into 6 minutes before watching the actual show? It sounds complicated to say the least.

I love it, but its an acquired taste nowadays Was there a time when it wasn't an acquired taste? The weirdness was, but the soap opera style was pretty much what TV looked like in the early 90's so nobody was saying "I can't watch this, it feels cheesy and dated". It was modern at the time and that's what made the weirdness palatable to a general audience; they could embrace it or ignore it and focus on whatever affair or love triangle followed it. And when it turned out the weird stuff was key to solving the murder, a lot of the general audience stopped watching and it got cancelled. Modern audiences have to contend with the weirdness and the dated look and feel, and if they're not feeling one or the other it won't click.

Even if you watched seasons 1&2, you still wouldn't have a fkn clue. Literally not true (and how can you even pretend to know that having never seen seasons 1 and 2?). It's really not that hard to follow along if you know the whole story so far. But yeah, anybody that hasn't seen seasons 1 and 2 (and FWWM) won't have a fucking clue.

I got goosebumps when the intro theme started playing in the first episode. I like it so far! It's different and seems slower in its storytelling but yeah, I'm intrigued by it so far and looking forward to how the story will unfold. Another thing I noticed is that there's a lot less music so far compared to the first two seasons.

Twin Peaks S03E08: That was the craziest fucking episode of television I've ever seen. Lynch is out-lynching himself again. You thought the third episode was weird?
You think Eraserhead or Inland Empire is weird? That's cute.

I fucking love that Lynch just aired that on TV. I can only imagine the Showtime executives faces when they got the final cut. The most abstract, batshit insane thing that I've ever seen air on TV and I loved every second of it.

Goddamn, that was the most satisfying episode in any TV series I think I've ever watched. We got Cooper back, we got to see what's really going on with Audrey... The long, frustrating, 16-episode build-up was totally worth it after all. I can't WAIT for the final double episode!
