What bands/artists that you looked forward to seeing live for the first time disappointed you when you did?
The first I can think of is The War on drugs. I love most of the latest album and a few other songs so I was looking forward to seeing them, but when I did it felt like they didn't really care whether the audience was there or not. It wasn't like they were bad as in playing badly or bad as in acting like assholes but...yeah, it just felt like you were kinda watching them from the outside looking in and that they didn't really care about creating an experience which involves both the band and the audience and in which both are important to be able to succeed.

Only one band have really "disappointed" me. That band is Mastodon.
A lot of shitty opening bands though, but I didn't have any expectations for most of them.

The first time I saw Cradle of Filth live. I had this image of them in my head from the few album photos I had seen. Mid nineties, not much internet. So Dani Filth walks out and is this tiny imp, without his vocal effects. And the hot slutty female vocals from the albums turned out to be this huge beast of a woman. Musically, it was perfect and awesome, but visually it was a joke. Dani Filth kept asking the girls in the crowd to "Show me your titties" in his cheesy British vampire voice. And no one did :(

^^ hahah sicjes, I love your story but that sucks for you. I saw them live about a year or so ago and it was fantastic! you would've loved it.. slutty nuns who got naked on stage, Dani in all his glory but still a tiny imp nonetheless. I see they are playing a pre-festival warm up gig for a crowd of 500 a few hours drive from me in June and I am sorely tempted to go.. very tempted indeed! Would be a nice b.day present to myself.
To answer the original question - I have never left a gig feeling disappointed and hopefully I never will.

Sisters of Mercy comes to mind.
Over enthusiasm with the smoke machines meant all we saw was feet for 2 hours.

Arcturus I love the band, but their sound is just too sophisticated for a big outdoors festival. They're obviously somewhat of a niche band so most of the audience was wtf-ing anyways.Hellhammer is so fucking sloppy live, ICS Vortex has like two stage moves as a frontman, he can't sing Garm's stuff, and having only one guitarist means they couldn't make it past the poor live sound. Their performance was also all over the place, one song they did ok, the next one they butchered, repeat process until the end of the concert. Metallica I saw them only once, on the St. Anger tour so it obviously sucked just on account of that. The guitars didn't sound good on dropped tuning or whatever that shit was, Kirk messed up his entrance on "One" and the badass break riff on Leper Messiah, and Lars was so overexcited he was exhausted after the third song, and kept jumping to growl at the mic between songs as if he was the fucking frontman. The following concert was the concert Lars missed and Lombardo and whatisface filled in so he probably was on drugs.

Sounded like shit, no distortion on the guitars, lights on, James didn't want to be there. Fuck it, went to a bar.

(still am in a way) could have scored discount tickets, didn't want them, and it turned out to be that show where they opened with Creeping Death, played AJFA for the first time since the 80s, full Am I Evil since 1998 and Disposable Heroes.

Mastodon, obviously. Great band in studio, horrible live. It's sad, really. I've seen them probably five times, and they've been terrible each time.
Nevermore was a fucking nightmare. I was excited when they were announced for Tuska Open Air in 2010, as I had just gotten into their stuff, especially digging "Dead Heart in a Dead World". But when I actually saw them, they sucked so bad I stopped liking the band altogether. Jeff Loomis definitely didn't want to be there, he performed the whole gig stationary with his back to the rest of the band. Warrel Dane had a baseball cap covering half of his face and didn't show any emotion on his face the whole show, obviously just going through the motions. I left about halfway through, pissed off.

Their Australian tour in early 2004 was still good, not as good as 2010 or 2013, but still great. Heard Ride The Lightning, The Thing That Should Not Be, The Unnamed Feeling. Good show, before LiveMet started.

Jorn Lande. But not because of his poor performance but because of he very poor audio quality. Somehow his voice got lost in the sound. You go to the concert of a top class vocalist and you can't hear him. Such a big disappointment. Just to clarify, it wasn't his crews fault. The festival organizer that failed.
Stratovarius.
Same festival. But this time the problem was in the bands sound. Stratovarius have one electric guitar player. Finding out that this diminishes the epicness and sound quality which is often found Stratovarius albums. Massive disappointment. They definately need another player.

Clutch
Even though not a fan of their albums, I thought they'd be a decent show live. Nuh-uh. So boring. I left after four or five songs. To this day my mates assume I left due to drunkeness, because they haven't grasped how eye-forkingly dull Clutch are live.

I'm pretty sure this is at least the third time you two have talked about leaving a Clutch concert in the middle of a show.

Only two bands ever really "disappointed" me live. First one was when I saw Disturbed during the Mayhem Fest (I forget the year). They were one of my entry bands into heavier music and, at the time, still one of my favourite bands. The band sounded decent, but the vocals were really weak, and whoever was doing backing vocals sounded awful and was way too loud in the mix imo. Still had a good time, but I stopped listening to them for quite a while after that day. I did see them again last year however and they sounded a lot better.
The worse one was probably Lich King though. I wasn't super familiar with them, but i'd heard their name along with some other great new-wave thrash bands, and they were playing a small nearby club with one of my favourite local bands opening to boot, so I was fairly excited. The band sounded super tight, but the vocals were some of the most godawful things i've ever heard in my life. The best way I can describe it was high pitched squeaking. That's it. Just really high and squeaky. At first I thought maybe he was just trying to be funny or something, but after two or three songs it was evident that this was not the case. Not to mention that he kept yelling at the crowd to get closer to the stage (which wasn't too many people, over half three crowd left after the locals were done lmao), then would make snide remarks when nobody did. I tried get through the show since I paid money to be there, but it just kept getting worse. I left after the 4th song.
