According to Lars on the Late Late Show last night, James was more pissed off about the whole Grammy fiasco than Lars has seen him in about twenty years. Good. Aggression brings out the best of him on stage, so people backstage should just keep reminding him what happened 'till they retire.

Lady Gaga's performance reminded of a show a stripper might put on...and not a very good one. Funny enough, that's how most of her early shows where with that Lady Starlight chick was. It was almost a strip show lol. That being said, I didn't mind it, it wasn't spectacular, but out of all the artists Metallica could've been paired with, this was a better choice. Eddie Trunk although I don't mind him, is speaking like a stereotypical metal fan. Doubt he knows the reason she got into music is because of Pink Floyd. Personally though, if they do collaborate later on, they should play Halo On Fire or something more melodic, I think that would fit better. Moth Into Flame didn't fit as great in my opinion, that's why it looked so cheesy and so forced.

They should cover Abba's Money, Money, Money and do a dual headline show where Metallica go on first.

Funny thing: If you saw The Grammy's and saw that James' mic was non-working for half the song..at the end he knocked his mic stand down and tossed his guitar..the EXACT same thing happened at the '09 gig here in Cleveland and he threw a fit then too..exact same.

So I recorded the Fox repeat of the grammys and zipped thru it last night looking for the Metallica performance. Not sure why but james' mic was working - could hear him loud and clear. Must have sorted it out for the replay.

How can it work for one medium and not the other if they mic itself was fucked?

Do you think his mom makes him pay to be in her presence?

How can it work for one medium and not the other if they mic itself was fucked? The mic itself wasn't fucked. It was just some wire that a stagehand unplugged by accident seconds before they started playing. I figured that there were different wires for TV and webcast, and the TV one was knocked loose. So they do have the actual audio, and added it to the replay.

That makes no sense.
If it was just the TV feed that wasn't working, Hetfield wouldn't have known until after the performance and wouldn't have had to share Gaga's mic or knock his microphone stand down in a fit of rage.
It's pretty weird.

The in ears aren't used to communicate. I'm guessing Het had no vocal feed to his in-ears either.

They can be used to communicate. I doubt that's what happened but you can definitely use them to do that.

It's pretty weird. Maybe he was told through his in-ear monitors. He wasn't told. You can see he knew something was wrong straight away. I didn't watch much of it at all but saw parts of the show were pretty amateurish too. Song of the year award, Adele speaks, hands the mic to the songwriter and they cut him off just as he was about to speak. And the classic MoP for Megadeth I just finished reading Mustaine's book so his comments about Metallica always being in his face are quite fresh and that right there was a perfect example of what he was talking about

Pathetic Strippers like Gaga and friends shouldn't be on stage with Metallica. The 'dance' (epileptic seizure) didn't fit the song at all.

Didn't like it. The whole thing felt like a classic Lars idea. I'm not saying that Lady Gaga isn't talented, and I'm not saying she doesn't work hard, but I do feel like her efforts to be this, then that are more of a carefully crafted PR strategy than having a genuine appreciation, kind of like what Avril Lavigne did with her whole "I'm a sk8er punk" thing back in the day. Just latching on to whatever's cool. She strikes me as the type who's attracted to that. The type who schmoozes among too-cool-for-you types in secret New York nightclubs that you're never getting into.
And I might have believed it a bit more if it weren't for those backing dancers. I can't believe that Metallica didn't kibosh that. It would have been nice if Gaga had pushed back on it as well.
People bringing the Lou Reed collaboration into the conversation is not a good comparison because Reed is more metal than Lady Gaga could ever be. He made Metal Machine Music which was an uncompromising barrage of noise, and he wrote some classic songs about being a heroin addict. Not that I'm saying that's a glamorous lifestyle, but he'd been through some dark nitty-gritty stuff, some real life experiences. Also, even though it was a pretty unpopular collaboration, I have to think that Reed was doing it, not because it would make him cool with a younger generation but because for whatever reason he heard a sound in it all that really pleased him.

Lou Reed is overrated shit from a bygone era when people didn't know any better.
Alex Skolnick is very accurate in his comments.
Lady Gaga is immensely talented, and hot, and smart and funny, get over it. Her appreciation for the metal side of music is apparent. If you don't see it, I suggest you buy yourself a pair of eyes.
I'll fight any of you about this.
Also, very, very drunk.

Lou Reed and Velvet Underground are obviously not for everyone but Lou was a very creative and innovative artist. I still find much of music he created in his day to be very interesting, oftentimes enjoyable, and I was born in 1996 so I'm not from "a bygone era when people didn't know any better," whatever that even means. You may not like him but he was very clearly a talented artist if nothing else.

Lady Gaga is hot dookie on a house slipper. Mediocre. Sold well as a hyped up costume party. Oooo, look what she's wearing. Oooo! She should be collabing with Slipknot instead, whom are skid marks on white undies.

That makes no sense. If it was just the TV feed that wasn't working, Hetfield wouldn't have known until after the performance and wouldn't have had to share Gaga's mic or knock his microphone stand down in a fit of rage. It's pretty weird. The mic sharing thing was staged/pre-planned. If it weren't, James wouldn't have either gone back to her mic for the other choruses, or gone back to his own for the second verse. As for who could/couldn't get the vocals, it's really never going to be known exactly what happened. But for events as big as this, all of the individual audio sources are split to several inputs, in this case the house mix, the monitor feeds, the TV stream, and the online stream, each with someone else controlling the sound. My semi-informed guess is that when this stage hand unplugged something by accident, the monitor and TV stream wires were knocked out of place (and maybe the house mix? I haven't seen any word about what it sounded like in person). Because James clearly knew what was going on, whereas sometimes these things could easily go unnoticed by the performer due to their monitors. Case and point:
