I thought Kirk's rhythm tone on the Black Album tour was kinda meh, personally. Felt like sort of a generic rock star sound, but a lot of people seem to think it was good. His live clean has always been horrible, but his lead tone back then was okay I guess. Never really struck to me as particularly bad or good overall, just kinda eh. These days it's pretty consistently bad though, all of it.
Now Jason's live tone though good God. Now that was bad. Admittedly even he acknowledged that in 1996 or so in an interview, and on the Load tour I'd say his tone was vastly better too. Still kind of a basic hard rock sound but I'll take that over the banjo shit any day.
Speaking of live tones though, I've always kinda liked the slightly less mean distortion on the Load tour the guitars had (especially James) yet funnily enough a lot of people seem to hate it for some reason. Never figured that one out myself.

Oh right. Clean tone was abhorrent. I did notice that his rhythm channel was strikingly lower in the mix than James's. When he flubbed some counts (he came in for the intro of Atlas wrong, for instance) I noticed how quiet he was. James has a footswitch to turn down Kirk's volume.

Kirk sounds like Jason there. Rob sounds terrible. Should stick to playing bass. But he did have some pretty good growls on the recent performances of Frayed Ends.

That's recent. As I implied, he has obviously worked on his backing vocals and has gotten a lot better recently. But from 2003 to about 2014 he was horrible.

Ain't gonna read it. Jason is an old fart like all of them. This is how stupid minds think. They think some memory of a person from many years ago is going to do the same shit today. Mikael from Opeth can't growl for shit anymore and that's why Opeth changed. Fear Factory is on hiatus because Burton lost his voice years ago. Shit changes.
My guess is that Rob is better for the band now than Jason would be today. How stupid people think, is that, if Jason was back the band would be like 1988. That is how some dumb fucking people really think.

He earned his spot in this band. I'm looking forward to seeing what his boy will do in the future. Is Tye's spot with Korn over with?
Will never understand how somneone cant see Rob is a far better fit in Metallica than Jason. It seems totally natural to me. Ideally Rob would have replaced Cliff....would Rob have been ready for the Metallica world back then though?

The way that website is set up I'm not even gonna try and read it. Here's e comment that set it off: It's a case of the sum being less than the parts. Rob is obviously insanely talented, but Jason was just the right one for Metallica, even better than Cliff to be honest. Jason's stage presence remains unmatched, especially lack of solid backing vocals is sorely missed, just compare newer performances to Jason era. For compositions, well even Jason was creatively restricted and undermined, while the band seemingly admitted this, I don't see them giving Rob any more room than Jason had. Consider this, against all odds, Jason managed to make memorable contributions (Blackened, My Friend of Misery etc.) Rob has been in the band longer than Jason had, what does he have to show, aside from the crabwalk? Ehem, back to the point, Rob could have been the greatest bassist, but we just cannot know that since he's been sitting ducks for the last two decades.

Either James or Lars said at the release of Death Magnetic, that Rob contributed more to that record than Jason ever did in his entire time in the band. They said this was due to Rob being 'on the same page' as them. Back in the Load era James said the things Jason tried to contribute often did not fit well with anything they were writing. Jason's music wasn't 'restricted', it was rejected. (cuz it sucked, duh.) Big difference.
For endless, dishonest, and just odd Jason worship, just see any youtube comment section that has Jason Newsted in the video. It's nostalgic idealism, from people that started listening to Metallica when Jason was in the band. Any issues they've ever had with Metallica (Load, Kirk and Lars' gayities, St.Anger, the Monster movie, etc.), Jason leaving the band became a heroic symbol of rebellion against the problematic Metallica. As well as the fantasy solution that if Jason came back, it would be Live Shit 1989 all over again.
In short, a lot of classic 'Jason is me, Metallica is my dad' type of psychology at play. Well, in my gut feeling anyway.

Jason was a bit of douche/childish, probably part of the band at their peak though.

Side project more important than Maytallica? Spelling Metallica as Maytallica is pretty childish.
